  7. INTRODUCTION
  8. ------------
  9.         Welcome to the demo version of Interplay's RAGS TO RICHES.  This is
  10. playable version of the game, but with many features and graphics removed.
  11.         Rags to Riches (RAGS) is a simulation game of the stock market.  You
  12. can buy and sell Oil, Gold, Chips and Bonds.  You want to buy low and sell
  13. high!  With the money you make, you can open offices in London and Tokyo,
  14. hire more employees, and buy material goods (what good is money, if you
  15. can't spend it!).
  16.         On just a pittance borrowed from your parents, you've started a
  17. one-room stock brokerage company.  Now you have to turn that into a global
  18. monolith.  And once you've made your money, you get to spend it on yachts,
  19. houses, art and all the things that a skillful, devious, ruthless
  20. businessperson deserves.
  21.         But to acquire all those big boy toys, you need to make some shrewd
  22. decisions.  Do you staff up with lawyers or take your chances that the SEC
  23. won't dial your number?  Do you plant spies in your competition's office?
  24. Do you risk insider trading?  Or do you apprentices deal with it all and
  25. spend the day golfing?
  26.         Don't worry--your greed will help you make those decisions.

  30. REQUIREMENTS

  33. The RAGS demo requires the following:
  34.         640k
  35.         VGA or SuperVGA
  36.         SoundBlaster (you must have a BLASTER enviroment variable)
  37.          (if you don't have a SoundBlaster, you can still play, but no sound)
  38.         Mouse recommended

  41. INSTRUCTIONS

  44. From the RAGSDEMO directory (or wherever you put the demo files), type
  45.  
  46. RAGS <enter>
  47.  
  48. to start the demo.
  49.  
  50. The computer will play a game until you press key, then you are in charge!
  51. You might want to watch the computer for a little bit to give you some idea
  52. of what you need to do.  If you don't touch the mouse or the keyboard for
  53. one minute, the computer will automatically play and you will lose your
  54. current game.

  56. Pressing ALT-X will quit the demo.

  59. THE MAIN SCREEN
  60. ---------------

  62. The main screen is your office (the actually game has many different offices,
  63. the more money you make, the better the office).
  64.  
  65. At the top of the screen is the menu bar.  You can make several changes to
  66. the game using the menu bar (like sound on/off, random events, etc).  If you
  67. are using a keyboard, pressing ALT-F or ALT-O will bring up the menu bar.

  69. From this screen you can make your choices to buy or sell.  Click on the 
  70. computer screen to change the stock.  The computer screen also shows you
  71. your current money and the status of the stock.

  73. Click the TV screen to change the current station.  The four stations will
  74. tell you about the stock in question.
  75.  
  76. Your employees are on the left side of the screen.  This demo version only
  77. allows you two employees, a secretary and a pit runner.  The actual game
  78. also has lawyers, accountants, and spies.
  79.  
  80. In the lower left is your sleep meter.  You can only stay awake for a period
  81. of time, before you need to go home and sleep.  But, the later you work, the
  82. more you can get done.

  84. The rolodex on the desk lets you select who you will call.  The demo version
  85. only lets you call a few people.  Click on the phone to call that person.
  86. A nice person gives money to charity, it certainly helps your image...

  88. The top of the screen is your tickertape.  Important events will appear on
  89. the tickertape.

  91. On the lower right side of the screen (the door) is a selection of places you
  92. can go to.  You can go home, or go shopping.  Shopping is where you spend
  93. your hard (or easy) earned money.

  96. KEYBOARD COMMANDS

  99. If you are using a keyboard, these commands are for you:

  101. Arrow Keys : to move up and down or from side to side in menus
  102. ESC : cancel an option
  103. Enter : selects an option
  104. ALT-X : exit the game
  105. ALT-T : allows you to see the time in three time zones
  106. ALT-F : selects the files menu
  107. ALT-O : selects the options menu
  108. ALT-P : pause the game
  109. 1 : selects the secretary
  110. 5 : selects the pit runner
  111. T : change TV stations
  112. C : change computer screen (bonds, chips, gold or oil)
  113. G : full screen graphs
  114. N : newspaper
  115. Z : sens you straight to sleep at your desk
  116. R : flips cards in your rolodex
  117. D : brings up the door icons
  118. M : change music stations on your radio
