Program Description:
********************
For those of you familiar with the game programs EGABomb & VGABomb,
BombAway will look suspiciously familiar. That's because BombAway is a
major upgrade that consolidates and greatly enhances those two
programs!
BombAway is a high-resolution mouse supported graphics game in which
two players fire artillery shells at each other under a moonlit star-
filled night sky. Games are played in sets, with each set consisting
of 10 rounds. In each round, a battlefield scene is determined by
many different random factors, including elevations, mountain shape
and size, wind factor, specific artillery piece positioning, and other
factors that guarantee a unique and unpredictable playing field no
matter how many times you play.
If BombAway detects an active mouse port, it will automatically
support it. See the appropriate section of this manual for more
details.

Starting the program:
*********************
To start the game, type "BombAway" and press the <ENTER> key. You are
presented with a title screen with copyright information and a brief
explanation of the game.
If you have a review version of this program, the next screen will be
a shareware advisory display with a convenient registration form that
you can print and mail.
************************
Configuring the program:
************************
The next screen is a configuration display in which you can select EGA
or VGA resolution, Sound or No Sound, and fine-tune the game speed to
your particular computer system.
Your configuration choices are kept in a special file (BombAway.Cfg)
and are used automatically from then on unless you wish to change
them at the configuration display. The game speed setting can also be
changed during the play of the game itself.
************************
Identifying the Players:
************************
Starting with v1.2, BombAway maintains a scoresheet in a file
(BombAway.Dat) that keeps up with your performance over time. Because
of this, BombAway needs to know the names of the players. Once you've
entered the names, you'll be given an opportunity to browse through
the current scoresheet, if it exists. All registered players are
listed in order of their current ranking. Ranking is determined by a
formula that weighs total sets played, total sets won, average rating
per set, and highest rating attained. The actual formula used is:
[(Sets Won / Sets Played) * (Average Rating + (Highest Rating / 5))] +
[(Sets Won / 5) + (Sets Played / 10)]
If you study this equation, you'll note that it rewards performance
factors in the following priority:
Ratio of sets won to sets played
Average Rating
Highest Rating
Number of Sets Won
Number of Sets Played
*****************
Playing the game:
*****************
Two players, each with an artillery position, fire shells at each
other until one player destroys the other's position. This
constitutes one round of play. Ten rounds of play constitute a
completed "set".
In each round, a unique battlefield is generated and each position
starts out with 100 men. Every time you fire your artillery piece,
however, 5 to 15 of your men desert their position. The same thing
happens to your enemy when he fires. There are two implications of
this: First, you only have a limited number of shots before your
position is deserted; second, the more shots you take to destroy your
enemy's position, the less credit you get, because there's less men to
kill (due to the similar desertion factor on the other side). So your
best scores are obtained by getting a direct hit in as few shots as
possible.
The round is over when one player destroys the other's position. A
"Round Summary" is displayed, and you're asked if you want to play the
next round. If you answer no, and you have completed at least one
round of play, a partial "Set Summary" is displayed. You are then
asked if you'd like to play a new set of 10 rounds.
Upon completion of 10 rounds of play, a set is automatically ended
with a "Set Summary" that shows the overall rating of each player,
indicating who won that set. Ratings are determined by a formula that
weighs 1) the number of games won and 2) the total kills credited.
Usually, whoever won the most individual rounds will come out ahead in
the Set Summary, but not always! The scoreboard is then updated with
the players' performance, and you are asked if you'd like to view the
current scoreboard. After viewing, you are then asked if you would
like to play another set of 10 rounds.
The game action and keyboard/mouse use are fairly intuitive. The
arrow keys (to select and adjust speed & trajectory angle), and the
<Enter> key or <Space Bar> (to shoot) are all that's needed to play
the game itself. See below for further details on using a mouse.
In addition, the <F2> key lets you reset a scene if the program gives
you a really difficult battlefield (happens every once in a while).
Also, as mentioned earlier, a graphic "Game Speed" bar can be changed
to speed up or slow down the graphics action as you play. Finally,
the <Esc> key lets you quit a set anytime. If you've completed at
least one round of a set when you <Esc>, the game will display a
partial Set Summary with whatever info is available at that point.
However, if you <Esc> from a set early, the scoreboard will NOT be
updated with your players' performance in that particular set.

Mouse Support
*************
If you have a mouse installed and activated, BombAway will automatically
detect and support the mouse functions, and the screen display will adjust
to accommodate the mouse. When the mouse is active, a "[Shoot Weapon]" box
will appear that you can point and click on to shoot your artillery piece.
You can use the mouse for all controls and options. Simply point the mouse
arrow and press any of the mouse buttons. Note that all of the keyboard
keys still also work appropriately, so you can mix and match input in any
manner you wish.
In adjusting the speed & trajectory of your artillery shells, only one of
these settings (the one highlighted in yellow) is active at a time. To
make a setting active with the mouse, position the mouse cursor on the same
row (and reasonably nearby) as the setting you wish to adjust, and press
any mouse button. That setting will then become highlighted and adjustable.
To adjust the setting upward (increase), position the mouse cursor
just to the right of the displayed number.
To adjust the setting downward (decrease), position the mouse cursor
just to the left of the displayed number.
Note: Whether you have a three- or two-button mouse, each button adjusts
the speed & trajectory functions at different repeat rates! The left
button adjusts these functions at moderate speed, the middle button fairly
fast, and the right button VERY fast. As you gain skill with the mouse,
speed & trajectory adjustments become fast and deadly accurate!
