  155.                What Tape  Back-up? (WTB)  is a  programme to  help you  manage
  156.           sets of back-up tapes.   WTB is provided  with the commands  for CMS
  157.           Jumbo 2.5 or Mountain 5.x software.

  159.                To use WTB you will need:
  160.                * PC with MS/PC-DOS 3.3 or higher
  161.                * About 256k of  free memory (the more the better,  since most
  162.                  tape  software  will  use  it  as  a  buffer  to  speed   up
  163.                  operations).
  164.                * Monochrome or colour monitor
  165.                * A tape drive
  166.                * CMS  Jumbo 2.5 or  Mountain 5.x tape software  or some other
  167.                  tape software which can be controlled via batch

  169.                WTB  stores  your  configuration  within  the  executable  file
  170.           WTB.EXE.   In order  to do  this, WTB.EXE  must remain  in its  full
  171.           size,  unmodified by  such things  as  LZEXE  (which is  otherwise a
  172.           wonderful product) or PKLite (a similar product).

  224.                I wrote  What Tape  Back-up? as a  way to manage  and track  my                        ___________________
  225.           sets  of back-up  tapes.   Although  most tape  software  (including
  226.           Mountain  and CMS)  have an automatic scheduling  feature, this does
  227.           not help the  user to track  which tape was last used,  the dates of
  228.           each  back-up,  and whether  or  not  the  tapes  were verified  for
  229.           accuracy.  Besides this, I believe that a routine  for regular back-
  230.           ups is critical to completing  them on a regular basis.  I know that
  231.           in my own case I rarely did back-ups when it was  up to me to figure
  232.           out which  tape to use, what type of back-up was last made, and what
  233.           type of back-up I needed next.

  235.                What Tape  Back-up? takes  care of  helping you  to schedule  a
  236.           back-up  routine  and  stick to  it  by  making things  as  easy  as
  237.           possible.  I hope  you will use it  to provide yourself  with better
  238.           security for your computer information.

  243.                To use  WTB with  default values  just type,  "wtb" at the  DOS
  244.           prompt.   In a  few seconds  three windows  will appear:   One  with
  245.           statistics about your  disk drives  (the Disk Window), another  with
  246.           statistics about  your back-up  tape set  (the Tape  Window), and  a
  247.           third with information on how the  current back-up will be performed
  248.           (the Back-up Window).

  250.                     Note:   I refer  to "sets"  of tapes  because many people,
  251.                like  myself, use more than  one tape per back-up.   I strongly                                                                      strongly
  252.                recommend  using at least  three sets  of back-up  tapes.  This
  253.                way if  the worst  possible case  happens --  your system  goes
  254.                down will making a  back-up -- you will  have other tape copies
  255.                from which to retrieve your data.

  284.           three sets  of tapes!)  use the  command "WTB  x" where  "x" is  the
  285.           number of  tapes you use.   For example,  "WTB 4"  would manage four
  286.           sets of tapes.

  292.                     You may only  want to back-up a certain range of hard disk
  293.                drives rather than all of  your drives.  Say,  for example, you
  294.                have hard disk drives  C: through J: and  a CD-ROM as  drive H:
  295.                You will  only want  to back-up  C: through  J: since H:  is in
  296.                little  danger of  being lost.    To do  this, use  the  "/Dxy"
  297.                option where  "x"  and "y"  are the  first and  last drives  to
  298.                back-up to  tape.  For example,  "/Dcj" will  back-up drives C:
  299.                through J:

  301.                     2. Without disk statistics (/N)
  302.  
  303.                     You may wish to bypass the  Disk Window, especially if you
  304.                have a large system  (such as a network) with a large number of
  305.                logical drive letters or ridiculously large amounts of  storage
  306.                (if so,  I'm jealous!).  To turn the drive  statistics off, use
  307.                the /N option followed by the  first and last (contiguous) disk
  308.                drive letters  you wish to  back-up.  For example,  if you have
  309.                drives C: through J: on your system and  you want to bypass the
  310.                Disk Window, use, "WTB /Ncj".

  314.                     You may wish to bypass the  tape back-up function of  WTB,
  315.                especially if you don't use  CMS or Mountain tape software.  To
  316.                do  this, use  the "/T" switch like  so:  "WTB /T".   This will
  317.                cause WTB to end after the tape selection is made and pass  the
  318.                Tape Set Number to DOS via ERRORLEVEL.   This way you can  have
  319.                a batch  file which calls WTB then checks the errorlevel to see
  320.                which tape to use.

  342.                     The default back-up mode  for WTB is a full back-up of all
  343.                drives.   Periodically you may wish  to only  back-up the files
  344.                which have changed since your last  full back-up since this  is
  345.                normally much  faster than doing  a full back-up.   To do  this
  346.                use  the /M command.   For example, "WTB  /dcj /m" will back-up
  347.                only the files  that have changed on drives C: through J: since
  348.                the last time a full back-up was made.

  352.                     Normally WTB will over-write the data on  the tape(s) with
  353.                the new back-up information.   If you would  like to append the
  354.                new information  to the end  of a tape  use the  "/A" option on
  355.                the command  line.   For  example,  "WTB  /M /A"  will  back-up
  356.                modified files only and  put the information at the end of  the
  357.                tape.

  361.                     To illustrate use of the options,  let's say you have disk
  362.                drives C:  through R:, you don't  want the  system to calculate
  363.                statistics on  all 16 drives,  you use 5 sets  of back-up tapes
  364.                (one  for each day  of the  week), and you  use something other
  365.                than CMS or Mountain software.  In your batch file do this:

  408.                Once you  enter the command  "WTB" along  with any command-line
  409.           options,  several  windows  will  open  showing  you  the  operating
  410.           environment and a  menu of options  at the  top of the screen.   You
  411.           can press the  highlighted (first) letter for  each option or use  a
  412.           mouse to select the options.

  424.                     This toggles the  verify flag on and  off.  When verify is
  425.                "on"  the  tape(s)  will  be  verified  after  the  back-up  is
  426.                complete.  When "off" only a back-up will be done.

  428.                     Because  verifying a  tape  doubles the  back-up  time,  I
  429.                found it more convenient (and virtually  as safe) to verify  my
  430.                tapes on  a rotating basis.  If  you use four tapes (like I am)
  431.                and you verify tape #1, then tape #4 will next be scheduled  to
  432.                be verified, then tape #3, then #2, then  #1, then back to  #4.
  433.                This way all tapes  are verified on  a regular basis.  I  found
  434.                that  by  saving time  this way  I  was less  tempted to  avoid
  435.                verifying at all (or even, heaven forbid, backing-up at all!).

  439.                     The set-up  screen lets  you select  the type  of software
  440.                you will  be using (as  defined in the file  WTB.CMD), the type
  441.                of tapes  you use  and their  capacity, the  number of sets  of
  442.                tapes you regularly use, and your preferred back-up scheme.

  444.                     Each option  has a menu of  choices except  for the number
  445.                of  tapes --  just enter the  number here.   The back-up scheme
  446.                (daily, weekly, monthly)  has not yet been implemented, so  for
  447.                now it's up to you to specify how to do each back-up.

  451.                     In the  Tape Window you will  see an arrow pointing to the
  452.                tape set  to be  used (this  is, of  course, a  recommendation,
  453.                since you are the  one who must put  the proper tape(s)  in the
