  1.                          The RaLin Reader Tutor File
  2.  
  3.  Welcome! Reading this file, with The RaLin Reader, will help you learn how to
  4.  use the Reader quickly. It is not meant to be a substitute for reading the
  5.  manual though.
  6.  The first thing I would like you to do, is press the function key F1, which
  7.  calls up the Help Screen, do it now..........
  8.  As you can see there is Help reference always available when using the RaLin
  9.  Reader. All the available Key Commands are listed on that screen.
  10.  
  11.  Lets see what it is that is displayed while you are in the Reader.
  12.  Up above are the two Header lines. The top line displays the Program name and
  13.  version, and to the right of that is displayed the Top Line which is the
  14.  number of the line currently at the TOP of the view window, to the right of
  15.  that is displayed the total number of lines in the file being viewed. The
  16.  line number/count displays are usefull when using the JUMP command, discussed
  17.  a little later.

  19.  The second line shows the name of the file being viewed, and to the right of
  20.  that, the Print Mode: how your text will be sent to the printer when you
  21.  print, either COMPRESSED or NORMAL.

  24.  Now that you have tried PgDn, use your arrow keys to move back up, to the
  25.  previous page, then back to the dashed line above, to continue.

  27.  At the bottom of your screen is what we call the Status Line. It will
  28.  either show the main Key Commands, as it does now, or other program Status
  29.  such as when printing, searching etc. It will also display error messages,
  30.  and last but not least, it is where you will be prompted for Search Text
  31.  when you wish to FIND a word or phrase.
  32.  
  33.  You will notice that towards the right end of the Status Line, the letter
  34.  'S' is displayed in the Highlight color. This tells you what mode you are
  35.  in for word searching, the lower case 's' means that text is searched for
  36.  regardless of whether it's found "exactly" as entered or not, meaning the
  37.  search is Case In-Sensitive. An upper case 'S' means the text will only be
  38.  found if it matches your entry exactly.  The sensitivity can be toggled by
  39.  pressing Alt-C...try it now, notice how the s changes to S and back again?
  40.  
  41.  To the right of that is Print: p  this signifies that printing the text
  42.  in the view window will go to the printer. In the Registered copy the
  43.  displayed text may be sent to a file. This is all covered in the manual.

  45.  This brings us to the Print Mode again, compressed or normal print can be
  46.  toggled with the Ctl-P key command. Try it.....notice the word NORMAL
  47.  changes to COMPRESSED and back again.
  48. Lets try a word search, make sure the lower case 'c' is showing in the
  49. Status Line. This will be a CASE-InSENSITIVE search. We want to look for the
  50. first occurance of find. So hit the 'F' key and enter in the word find.
  51. After you have found the first one, hit 'N' to locate the next, which should
  52. put you right back here on this page. You can continue to press N to find
  53. the next match, once no match is found, a message will be displayed, press
  54. any key to reset.
  55.  
  56. When the word is found, the line it's found in is placed on line #2 of the
  57. view window, and highlighted. If the search was done case insensitive, the
  58. line is displayed in all UPPER case. IF it was a case sensitive search, it
  59. will be displayed as it was found. Pressing any movement key will remove the
  60. highlight bar.  PLEASE PRESS THE UP-ARROW KEY

  62. On the next page, we are going to try out the print functions, and printer
  63. Command Keys....you may want to make sure your printer is OnLine.
  64. If it isn't, any command that has to do with the printer will sound an alert
  65. tone and display a warning message.

  67. So, let's get on with it!
  68. I don't think we need to print out this particular file at the moment, but
  69. this can be accomplished at any time by pressing your F10 function key. But
  70. we will cover printing the "Currently Displayed Text". This function will
  71. print the text that is currently in the view window, 22 lines. This is
  72. activated with the F9 function key.  During this we will test the COMPRESSED
  73. and NORMAL print toggle switch Ctl-P.
  74.  
  75. So that we have a full page here, I will mention a couple of other things,
  76. before we test the print commands. The RaLin Reader will only display 80
  77. characters per line, so if the file has lines longer than 80 chars, they
  78. will be chopped off. BUT....when the lines are PRINTED, the entire line will
  79. be printed as it exists in the file. This is the main reason the COMPRESSED
  80. toggle was included. If you know the file has lines longer than 80 chars,
  81. you can print it out in compressed mode, and get the whole line in one,
  82. rather than split in the printout.
  83. Future versions (perhaps "YOUR" registered copy) will also allow you to type
  84. in a command string to send to the printer while you are in the Reader.

  89. OK...lets try it out.  First hit Ctl-P to get into COMPRESSED mode, then hit
  90. F9 for Print Page....Did it work?  Now toggle to NORMAL mode and hit F9
  91. again. If the print modes did not change, please refer to the manual.
  92. Now, seeing as we don't have a full page printout, lets try a couple of
  93. other printer Command Keys. The first thing I want to show you is single
  94. line print. You can print any specific line by placeing it at the TOP of the
  95. view window, and pressing Alt-L. If the line is blank, an error tone will
  96. sound. If the line contains text, it will be printed. So give this a try.
  97.          * * * We have a line at the top, so just press ALT-L * * *
  98. Now, hit Ctl-L once or twice, this will advance the paper one line per
  99. keypress. Now hit Ctl-F for form feed, which will eject the paper, giving
  100. us a fresh page to work with. The Print Page and Print Line can be handy for
  101. cutting sections out of a document for later use. Newer versions will allow
  102. you to specify if Print Page or Print Line should send the text to the
  103. printer or another text file.

  105. Let's try the JUMP function. Whatever line you specify, will be placed at
  106. the top of the view window. If you specify a line number greater than the
  107. number of lines in the file, then you will be placed at the LAST line of the
  108. file.  IF you do end up at the end of the file, the downward movment keys
  109. will be disabled, but the UpArrow, PgUp and Home keys will work.

  111. Speaking of which, feel free to try the Home and End keys at any time.
  112. So hit 'J' and enter 25 at the prompt (top of window), when you get to line
  113. 25, hit 'J' again and enter 111 for the line number.
  114.  
  115. When you reach the top of the file, pressing any upward movement keys will
  116. result in an error tone. When at the bottom of the file, PgDn will result in
  117. an error tone, but you MAY use the down arrow key to place the last line of
  118. the file at the top of the view window. This is allowed so that should you
  119. want to print only the last line of the file, you may.
  120. You can test these functions by hitting Home, then End, then try PgDn, and
  121. then try the DnArrow.  Or you can do it from here.

  139. I would like to mention, the Registered Copy has the additional features
  140. activated, and you also get a configuration program to modify the colors
  141. used in the Reader, and to specify what Editor to use.

  143. The RaLin Reader is hard coded to use an editor named QE.EXE. If you wish
  144. to use an editor with this Evaluation copy, it MUST be named QE.EXE.
