I used to be annoyed, when performing my accounting duties,
at how inconvenient it was to enter numerous dates in 1-2-3.
I therefore developed the following three macros for 1-2-3
version 2.2 that let me enter dates easily and without
complicated formulae [see figure].
Use <Alt>-X if the dates vary between years. To enter July
3, 1991, for example, press <Alt>-X, then type 91703 or
910703. In either case, the result in your worksheet will be
`07/03/91'.
If all the dates you're entering are in the same year, you
can save even more keystrokes by typing <Alt>-Y, which uses
a default from a cell labeled `year'. In this example, July
7, 1991, is entered as 707 or 0707.
Use <Alt>-Z if all dates are in the same month: July 5,
1991, is then entered as 5 or 05. Set the `year' and `month'
cells before entering dates.
In practice, I use only one of these macros at a time and
assign the range name \x to the one I'm using. I sometimes
add or to the end of a macro if I need the cursor to move
right one cell or down one cell after the date has been
entered. Happy dating!

Editor's note: The spreadsheet shown below is on your
PowerBase *.* Volume IV diskette in the file
P4SPREAD\DATING.WK1. If you enter the macros by hand, type
an apostrophe before each cell entry that starts with a
slash or backslash (/ or \), to make sure that 1-2-3 sees
the entry as text rather than as a command. The apostrophe
won't appear in the cell, but it will show up at the top of
the screen if you edit the cell's contents. The default year
and month (`91' and `5') go in column B, the same column as
the macro commands; they appear to be farther to the right
only because, as numbers, they're flush right.
Finally, remember that the cells in the leftmost column are
there for two reasons: for documentation purposes and to
give range names to the cell immediately to the right. Use
the /Range Name Labels Right command to assign these names
to the appropriate cells in the right column.
