  183. Users who have  registered  DCMENU may upgrade to the latest version of DCMENU
  184. by  sending in their  original  DCMENU  diskette,  along with $10 (service and
  185. handling).    Please use the enclosed order form when upgrading.  If there has
  186. been an address change, please so indicate on the order form.

  188. The original disk must  contain the  registered  version of DCMENU.   The disk
  189. will be reformatted and the  current Master copied onto it.   Any disk in poor
  190. condition  will  be  replaced by DC Software.    If the serial number label is
  191. missing or the diskette does not contain the registered version of DCMENU,  we
  192. regret that the update will not be performed and the diskette will be returned
  193. unchanged.

  196. SITE LICENSE - ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  199. If you plan on using  DCMENU in a  corporate or  government office,  or in any
  200. business environment  whatsoever,  registration is  mandatory and the two week
  201. limited-use  license  does  not  apply.   For  such  users,  however, quantity
  202. discounts are available under a  Site  License  agreement.  One MASTER copy of
  203. DCMENU  (with  documentation)  will be  provided  on  diskette.   The  site is
  204. responsible  for printing the  documentation and  copying  the  diskettes  for
  205. distribution.   Sorry, but backups of the  MASTER  disks  do not count towards
  206. the total copies for licensing purposes.

  208. With all site licenses, the site will supply one contact person with which all
  209. correspondence  will be made.   If a problem should occur,  the contact person
  210. will call and make arrangements for its solution.    Updates to DCMENU will be

  248. application and any warranties of merchantability.

  250. We have been as thorough as possible while testing DCMENU.   DC Software shall
  251. not be liable for any damages,  including  any lost profits,  lost  savings or
  252. other incidental or consequential damages arising out of your use,  misuse  or
  253. inability to use the program, or for any claim by any other party,  or for any
  254. damages, whether direct,  indirect,  special,  or consequential arising from a
  255. failure of this program or  accompanying files to operate in a  manner desired
  256. by the user.  DC Software shall, further, not be liable for any damage to data
  257. or property which may be caused directly or indirectly by use of this program.

  259. To  those  people  who have  registered  (and have  received  a diskette), the
  260. physical diskette is warranted   against defects in materials  and workmanship
  261. for a period of 60 days from date of shipment by DC Software.     Any returned
  262. disks found damaged or bad will be replaced at no charge.

  265. OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS

  274. INSTALLATION
  275.  
  276. Before Installation
  277.  
  278. There are some errors that occur during the installation procedure that can be
  279. avoided by taking a few simple precautions, as defined below.
  280.  
  281.     1.   Be sure that the hard drive on which you are installing DCMENU
  282.          has at least 2 Mbytes of free space.
  283.  
  284.     2.   Be sure that the version of MSDOS under which you are operating is
  285.          above level 3.2.  DCMENU requires DOS Versions 3.30 or higher to
  286.          properly execute.
  287.  
  288.     3.   If you plan on using DCMENU with an EGA card, be sure that the
  289.          card is capable of handling 640 x 480 by 16 color graphics mode.
  290.  
  291.  
  292. When DCMENU.ZIP is un-zipped, you will be left with several files.  The DCMENU
  293. program file,  DCMENU  information files and a simple  INSTALL.BAT  file.   In
  294. order for  DCMENU  to run  correctly,  you must first have all of the files in
  295. appropriate directories.    The correct directory structure for DCMENU is as
  296. follows:

  306. INSTALLATION PROGRAM
  307.  
  308. To have DCMENU  automatically make the  directory and  subdirectories for you,
  309. move the  DCMENU  files into the  directory  that you want to use for it,  and
  310. simply type  "INSTALL".    Install will create the  necessary directories, and
  311. move all of the files to their correct places.

  316. STARTING DCMENU
  317.  
  318. Once the files have been placed in the correct directories, go to the directory
  319. into which you have installed DCMENU and type "DCMENU" from the DOS prompt.
  320.

  322. TO AUTOMATICALLY START DCMENU AT BOOT-UP
  323.  
  324. To have DCMENU automatically start-up every time  you  turn  on your computer,
  325. you must add  some commands  to your  AUTOEXEC.BAT  file.   Your  AUTOEXEC.BAT
  326. file is located in the root directory of your boot drive, and it can be edited
  327. using any standard text editor.  You must change to the disk and  directory in
  328. which DCMENU has been installed  before it can be started.   If,  for example,
  329. you have installed DCMENU on your "D" drive in subdirectory "MENU",  you would
  330. need to add the following three  lines to your autoexcec.bat file:

  336. These commands should be the last lines in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  343.                                   USER'S MANUAL
  344.  
  345. DESCRIPTION
  346.  
  347. DCMENU is a true Graphical User Interface (GUI) Menu program, which does not
  348. sacrifice ease of use with the keyboard for the graphical interface approach
  349. of using a mouse.  Its primary purpose is to provide a user with an EASY way
  350. to  create a menu  system  and  use it to run  programs.  The user interface
  351. consists of  a workspace  on the  screen,  the mouse  and the keyboard.  The
  352. workspace  is divided  into two major parts.   The lower part  is called the
  353. DESKTOP.     It contains the program icons for the programs you will want to
  354. run, and the folder icons  for your  program groups.   The upper part of the
  355. workspace  holds  icons  for  those  folders  (program groups) that are open,
  356. or in use.  When you start DCMENU, the MAIN folder icon shows up in this area,
  357. which is called the SCROLL area, to remind you that the MAIN folder is a
  358. DCMENU program group.
  359.

  361. MOUSE USE
  362.  
  363. Although DCMENU is designed to be used with a mouse, you do not need to have a
  364. mouse  attached  to  your  computer in order to  easily  use the full range of
  365. DCMENU features.  If you choose to use a mouse, in order for the mouse to work
  366. correctly  with  DCMENU,  you must  first have a mouse  and the  correct mouse
  367. driver  installed.   Please refer to your mouse  User's Manual  for details on
  368. installing  a mouse driver.   Once you have  loaded your mouse  driver and the
  369. mouse is working with DCMENU, the following instructions apply:
  370.  
  371. As you move about the desktop and scroll areas,  the "touched" objects will be
  372. highlighted  either  by  a  change in color,  or by a  change in  presentation
  373. method.  If the mouse cursor is not touching anything,  clicking the mouse has
  374. no effect.   If the mouse is touching a program or folder,  clicking the mouse
  375. has the following effects:
  376.  
  377. LEFT MOUSE BUTTON    -Double Click   Launches programs, opens folders.
  378.  
  379. LEFT MOUSE BUTTON    -Single Click  Hooks a program or folder for editing.
  380.  
  381. RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON      -Single click while highlighting a program or folder
  382.                          will bring up the edit menu.
  383.  
  384.  
  385. If the mouse cursor is  "touching"  a button or a  text box,  clicking  either
  386. button will activate the buttons and/or enable the text box for text input.
  387.  
  388.  
  389. KEYBOARD USE
  390.  
  391. DCMENU  is  one of the  first  programs to be  considered  a true  GUI program
  392. (Graphical  User  Interface)  which  provides  for  real ease  of use with the
  393. keyboard.  The following is a description of keyboard functions:
  394.  
  395. ESCAPE
  396.         Cancels the current activity, removes error notices from the workspace,
  397.         and erases the current text entry.  Whenever there is a "CANCEL"
  398.         button on the screen, pressing ESCAPE will automatically depress that
  399.         button.  Whenever there is a "PROBLEM" notice on the workspace,
  400.         pressing ESCAPE will remove the problem notice and allow you to
  401.         continue.
  402.  
  403. ENTER
  404.         Will activate the button which is currently highlighted (except for
  405.         arrow buttons), or will automatically press "OK" if any "OK" button is
  406.         on the desktop.  It will also launch any highlighted programs or open
  407.         any highlighted folders when it is pressed.
  408.  
  409. F1
  410.         Will bring up the HELP MENU.
  411.  
  412. F2
  413.         Brings up the Edit Menu.
  414.  
  415. F3
  416.         Exits DCMENU.
  417.  
  418. UP ARROW
  419.         Moves you to the folder area (Scroll Area) or scrolls the up-down
  420.         arrows when present in a window.  Also allows you to move from button
  421.         to button in windows where the buttons are   arranged vertically.
  422.  
  423. DOWN ARROW
  424.         Moves you from the folder area (Scroll Area) down to the desktop area
  425.         where the programs and folders reside.  It also presses the down arrow
  426.         on any window with an up-down arrow, and allows you to move from
  427.         button to button in windows where the buttons are arranged  vertically.
  428.  
  429. RIGHT ARROW
  430.         Moves the cursor to any element (Button etc.) that is to the right of
  431.         it.  Using the right cursor key is the only way to use the keyboard to
  432.         move from the 1st program or folder on the desktop to any folders or
  433.         programs below or to the right of it.
  434.  
  435. LEFT ARROW
  436.         Moves the cursor to the element to its left.
  437.  
  438. PAGE DOWN
  439.         The Page Down Key is only active on the "DIRECTORY"  menu page, and
  440.         allows you to rapidly page through the directory tree or file list.
  441.  
  442. PAGE UP
  443.         The Page Up Key acts in the same way as the Page Down Key but in the
  444.         reverse direction.
  445.  
  446. HOME
  447.         The Home Key is active only on the "DIRECTORY" menu and positions you
  448.         at the beginning of the directory tree or file list.
  449.  
  450. END
  451.         The End Key acts like the Home Key, but positions you at  the end of
  452.         the directory tree or file list.
  453.  
  454.  
  455. ALTERNATING USE
  456.  
  457. Switching  back and forth between  mouse and  keyboard use is also easy.  Just
  458. move the mouse  to go into  mouse mode,  or depress  either the  left or right
  459. cursor key to go back into keyboard mode.
  460.  
  461.  
  462.  
  463. EDIT MENU
  464.  
  465. The edit menu is used to  add  programs,  change program names, change program
  466. icons,  add folders,  move folders  etc.   To bring up the  edit menu,  simply
  467. press  F2  if you are using  the  keyboard,  or move  the  mouse cursor to the
  468. F2Edit button  on the  desktop  and  click  either  button  once.   If you are
  469. touching  a  folder or program icon that you wish to edit,  simply  click  the
  470. right mouse button once to enable  editing functions for  that  element.   The
  471. edit menu window has the following options:
  472.  
  473.     1. ADD
  474.     2. DELETE
  475.     3. RENAME
  476.     4. MOVE
  477.     5. ICON
  478.  
  479. We will now discuss the  following  functions in detail one at a time in their
  480. respective order of appearance.
  481.  
  482.  
  483. EDIT MENU ADD BUTTON
  484.  
  485. The ADD BUTTON on the Edit Menu is used to add new programs or new folders to
  486. the desktop.
  487.  
  488.     ADD FOLDER
  489.         There are two types of folder icons, manila folders and briefcases.
  490.         They are identical in function.  There are two different kinds of
  491.         folders strictly for aesthetic purposes.  You may select brief cases
  492.         for business type applications while placing fun programs like games
  493.         in manila folders.
  494.  
  495.         If you are already in a folder and you elect to add a program or
  496.         folder, you will be adding a program or folder inside the already
  497.         open folder (a folder in a folder).  You may not add folders or
  498.         programs with the same name as a program or folder already in use on
  499.         DCMENU.  If you try to add two folders with the same name, you will
  500.         get an error message alerting you to this fact and you will be asked
  501.         to enter another name.
  502.  
  503.    ADD PROGRAM
  504.         When electing to add a new program to the menu, you may type in the
  505.         path and executable file name or you may choose to have DCMENU look at
  506.         your hard disk to assist you in locating the correct program file to
  507.         add.  To have DCMENU assist you in your search, press the "FIND THE
  508.         FILE" button when asked to enter in the path and filename.  You will
  509.         now be prompted to select the drive where the program file exists.
  510.         Select a drive now and wait while the program searches your hard disk
  511.         for programs.  DCMENU will display the directory structure and a list
  512.         of the executable files in the highlighted entry of the directory.
  513.         You may scroll or page through the directory and/or file list to
  514.         select the file that you want to use for this program.  DCMENU will
  515.         select the file to be used as the one with the white lettering
  516.         highlight.  Depress the "OK" button to select the file.  DCMENU will
  517.         now prompt you for default program parameters and an icon selection.

  519.  
  520. EDIT MENU DELETE BUTTON
  521.  
  522. DELETE button  on the  EDIT Menu  is used to remove program or folder icons.
  523. For folder  icons, the delete function  also removes the folder file.
  524.  
  525. Program files (executable) are not affected by this function.  In other words,
  526. deleting a program from your menu  DOES NOT delete it from your hard disk.
  527.  
  528.    DELETE
  529.         To delete a program or folder, you must first highlight the program or
  530.         folder you wish to delete.  If you are using the keyboard press F2,
  531.         or, if you are using the mouse, click on the right mouse button and
  532.         the edit menu will appear.  From the edit menu, select "DELETE" and
  533.         then at the confirmation window which says, "DELETE THIS
  534.         PROGRAM/FOLDER" press OK.

  537. EDIT MENU RENAME BUTTON
  538.  
  539. The  RENAME  button  on the  edit menu  allows  you to change the names of the
  540. folders or programs that are on the desktop.
  541.  
  542.    RENAME
  543.         Renaming a program or folder is done much the same way as any other
  544.         edit option is performed.  In order to rename a program or folder, you
  545.         must first select the item you wish to rename.  To do this, you
  546.         highlight the program or folder with the mouse or keyboard and then
  547.         either click the right mouse button once,  or press F2 respectively.
  548.         Once the edit menu appears, you select "RENAME" and then type in your
  549.         new name.
  550.  
  551. EDIT MENU MOVE BUTTON
  552.  
  553. The  MOVE  button on the edit menu allows you to move folders or programs from
  554. folder  to  folder.    Only the folder  FROM  which you are  moving an element
  555. needs to be visible (OPEN).
  556.  
  557.    MOVE
  558.         To move a folder or program to another folder or back to the main
  559.         menu, you first select the program or folder you wish to move by
  560.         highlighting it and then pressing either F2 or the right mouse button.
  561.         At the edit menu, select "MOVE" and the move window will appear.  Use
  562.         the up-down arrow at the right of the move window to select the folder
  563.         you wish to move to.  You cannot move a folder to itself, nor can you
  564.         move a program which has the same name as a folder to that folder.

  567. EDIT MENU ICON BUTTON
  568.  
  569. The  ICON button on the edit menu allow you to change the icon associated with
  570. one of the programs that are on the desktop.
  571.  
  572.    ICON
  573.         Programs are represented by icons in DCMENU.  An icon is just a little
  574.         drawing that represents a program.  The icons used by DCMENU are

  589. Registered Versions of DCMENU.   To do so,  you must run  DCSETUP  from either
  590. the  DOS prompt or from the Main Menu of DCMENU.  DCSETUP is available only to
  591. registered users of DCMENU.
