  3.     Welcome to AMS!  This file tells how to get going with AMS quickly.
  4.  
  5.     To get started quickly the steps in this file are outlined below:
  6.  
  7.     1. Follow the quick installation routine below

  9.     2. Print the User's Manual as described below

  11.     3. This is a Share Ware program. Please read the license and registration
  12.        requirements in the User's Manual sections

  16.     ***** QUICK INSTALLATION
  17.     ***************************************************************************

  19.     AMS is provided in a self extracting file of the format AMSxxx.EXE where
  20.     xxx is the version number.
  21.  
  22.     If AMS was down loaded from a computer bulletin board it may also be
  23.     compressed and placed in a .ZIP .ARC or similar file. Place the compressed
  24.     file in a convenient directory on your hard disk drive other than the root
  25.     directory.  Decompress the down loaded file using appropriate procedures
  26.     for your system.
  27.  
  28.     If you are installing AMS from a distribution diskette it is installed as
  29.     follows: Place the installation diskette in an available drive which will
  30.     usually be either "A" or "B". Select the drive in which the diskette is
  31.     placed by entering: "A:" and press the enter key.  (On some machines the
  32.     <Enter> key may also be labeled <Return>.)  Then copy the compressed self
  33.     extracting file into a convenient directory of your choosing on the hard
  34.     disk which will be designated as \ZZZ:
  35.  
  36.                     A:\COPY AMSxxx.EXE C:\ZZZ
  37.  
  38.     Place the AMSxxx.EXE self extracting file in a directory by itself. Set the
  39.     current directory to the directory in which it resides:
  40.  
  41.                     C:\CD\ZZZ
  42.  
  43.     Extract the files by typing the file name (the xxx should be replaced with
  44.     the file version number) and pressing <Enter>:
  45.  
  46.                     C:\AMSxxx  <Enter>
  47.  
  48.     The decompressed files will be placed in the current directory after the
  49.     extraction is complete. (Do not try to run AMS from this directory.)
  50.  
  51.     To install AMS type "INSTALL" followed by a space and the letter of the
  52.     drive on which the program is to be installed. As this will usually be "C"
  53.     drive it will be so assumed for the rest of this discussion and the entry
  54.     should look like this:

  56.                     C:\INSTALL C <Enter>
  57.  
  58.     This command will automatically install the program on drive "C" in
  59.     directory "C:\AMS" and a small batch startup file "AMS.BAT" will be placed
  60.     in the root directory "C:\".
  61.  
  62.     When the file installation is complete AMS will initiate a startup sequence
  63.     that consists of seven screens that provided details for basic program
  64.     configuration.  Follow the instructions on the screen.  At the last screen
  65.     save the configuration entered as instructed.

  67.     A shareware and registration screen will then be displayed. Print a copy ot
  68.     the Registration form by pressing <Y>.  Then press any other key to display
  69.     the title and password screen. If a password was selected you must enter it
  70.     exactly and press <Enter>.  If no password was entered just press enter and
  71.     the program Main Menu will be displayed.

  73.     This will install the program files and demonstration files in the \AMS
  74.     directory.

  76.     ***** PRINT THE AMS USER'S MANUAL:

  79.     The User's Manual is included in a file called AMS.DOC.  It
  80.     can be printed using the DOS PRINT command.  Set the directory
  81.     to the directory in which AMS.DOC resides. Then enter the
  82.     command to print the manual as follows:

  84.                      C:\PRINT AMS.DOC
  85.  
  86.     For more information on the print command refer to your DOS
  87.     User's Guide and Reference Manual.

  89.     ***** HOW TO START AMS:
  90.     **************************************************************************     Start AMS by entering "AMS" and pressing the enter key:

  92.                       C:\AMS <Enter>
  93.  
  94.     This will start the Action Management System Program. If the program has
  95.     not been registered a shareware and registration screen will appear.  Press
  96.     any key other then <Y> to proceed. A title, copyright, and password screen
  97.     will be displayed and a password will be requested if one has been entered.
  98.     If no password has been entered just press <Enter>, and the Main Menu will
  99.     be displayed. If a password is installed it will be necessary to enter the
  100.     password before pressing <Enter>.  The password must be entered exactly
  101.     using capital letters and small letters.  These letters will not be
  102.     displayed as they are entered for security.

  104.     ***** REGISTRATION, DISCLAIMER, AGREEMENT, AND LIMITATIONS
  105.  
  106.     The registration form may be printed from the shareware screen displayed on
  107.     program startup by entering a <Y>.  Please print and complete the
  108.     registration form.  A copy is also provided at the front of this Users
  109.     Manual.  When I receive your registration and the applicable fee I will
  110.     send instructions for disabling the shareware screen.
  111.  
  112.     Users of the Action Management System must accept this disclaimer of
  113.     warranty: "The Action Management System is supplied as is.  The author
  114.     disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without
  115.     limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any
  116.     purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or
  117.     consequential, which may result from the use of the Action Management
  118.     System."

  120.     The Action Management System is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
  121.     charge to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  122.     friends, but do not give it away altered or as part of another system.
  123.     Such shared copies must be in the compressed self extracting file that
  124.     includes all the unaltered files that it contains.
  125.  
  126.     The concept of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
  127.     users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide an
  128.     incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products.  If you find
  129.     this program useful and find that you are using the Action Management
  130.     System and continue to use the Action Management System after a reasonable
  131.     trial period, you must make the registration payment.  The registration fee
  132.     will license one copy for use on any one computer at any one time.  Treat
  133.     this software just like a book.  This software may be used by any number of
  134.     people and may be freely moved from one computer location to another, so
  135.     long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it's
  136.     being used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different
  137.     persons at the same time.

  139.     Commercial users of the Action Management System must register and pay for
  140.     their copies of the Action Management System within 30 days.

  142.     Evaluation copies of the Action Management System may be distributed
  143.     provided the cost is $10.00 or less and the program is distributed in an
  144.     unmodified form as described above.  This is not to be construed as
  145.     representing the registration fee which must still be paid as described
  146.     above.

  148.     You are encouraged to pass a copy of the Action Management System along to
  149.     your friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their copy
  150.     if they find that they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy
  151.     of the latest version of the the Action Management System system.

  153.     ***** THE BIG PICTURE
  154.     **************************************************************************     START AMS BY ENTERING "AMS" AND PRESSING THE ENTER KEY:

  156.     Read section 2.0 of the User's Manual or Help Module B as they describe the
  157.     management framework in which AMS is to be used.  This is just as important
  158.     as learning how to use the computer program and will have a strong bearing
  159.     on the successful implementation of the system.  Section 3.0 includes a
  160.     brief tutorial using demonstration files that will provide a look at AMS
  161.     reports and provide hands on experience using AMS.  Section 5.0 provides a
  162.     detailed description of the main program functions.  Skim this section to
  163.     learn where to find the details.  Section 4.0, 6.0, 7.0, and the Appendices
  164.     provide material for future reference as AMS is used. And of course read
  165.     1.4 on registration and legal stuff!
