  2.                              RELEASE NOTES 
  3.                              As of 4/20/92
  4.  
  5.     This file contains release notes for ACTION DESIGNER.  Look 
  6.     here for the latest in enhancements, bug fixes, anomolies, and 
  7.     workarounds.
  8.     
  9.     In general, problems for which workarounds are given will be 
  10.     fixed in the next release (i.e., version 1.x+1).

  17.     Removed all limitations from shareware version.

  20.     CHANGES/NEW FEATURES
  21.     1. A vertical scroll bar has been added to the edit window.  
  22.     Vertical scrolling can be performed with the mouse.  Click 
  23.     (with the left mouse button) on the scroll arrows at the ends 
  24.     of the scroll bar to move the cursor 1 line.  Drag the scroll 
  25.     box by pointing to it and holding down the left mouse button 
  26.     while dragging the box up or down.  To page up or down, click 
  27.     inside the scroll bar above or below the scroll box.

  29.     2. There are now mouse equivalents of the expand/contract 
  30.     diagram keys.
  31.  
  32.     A horizontal scroll bar has been added.  But, its purpose is
  33.     somewhat different than the vertical bar's.  If you click on the 
  34.     left scroll arrow, the diagram will contract (as when you press 
  35.     SHIFT+LEFT).  Press the right scroll arrow and the diagram will 
  36.     expand (equivalent to SHIFT+RIGHT).  In fact, you can click 
  37.     anywhere to the left or right of the scroll box as well as 
  38.     directly on the scroll arrows.  The scroll box will track 
  39.     the cursor whenever the entire screen is updated.  This 
  40.     "benefit" is just a side effect of using the scroll bar in this 
  41.     manner and serves no particular purpose.  You cannot drag the
  42.     scroll box or page using the horizontal bar.

  44.     When you place the cursor on the opening edge of a bracket and 
  45.     press the right mouse key, the bracket will contract (equivalent
  46.     to CTRL-LEFT).  Place the cursor on the line preceeding a locally
  47.     contracted bracket and press the right mouse button to expand
  48.     the bracket (equivalent to CTRL-RIGHT).

  50.     3. Tabs are now recognized.  Set the desired tab size on the 
  51.     Options screen.  Note that the required number of spaces is 
  52.     substituted for the tab character; the tab character itself is 
  53.     not stored in the text.  Also, the first tab stop on a line is 
  54.     always relative to the left margin.
  55.  
  56.     4. To make AD more CUA (Common User Access) compliant, 
  57.     the menu bar has been reorganized.  Some new options have 
  58.     been added:
  59.  
  60.             o On the Diagram Menu
  61.               Close - Close a diagram without saving it.
  62.               Save As - Save a diagram under another name.
  63.             
  64.             o On the Language Menu
  65.               A set of options consistent with the Diagram Menu 
  66.               has been added.
  67.  
  68.               It is now possible to load a new language while 
  69.               editing a diagram.  For example, you can switch 
  70.               from Structured English to "C" and back.
  71.  
  72.             o On the Menu Bar
  73.               Search - A full set of search and replace options.  
  74.               This is actually a very powerful capability since 
  75.               it supports regular expressions.  See the file 
  76.               REGULAR.TXT for complete documentation.

  78.               Options - Setup has been renamed to Options
  79.  
  80.     5. For the same reason as #4, the following keys have been 
  81.        reassigned:
  82.             F4 - insert scrap is now Shift+Insert
  83.             Shift+Insert - insert blank line is now Control+Enter
  84.             F5 - delete bracket from around block is now F4
  85.  
  86.             F5 is now unassigned.
  87.  
  88.             Other keys may be resassigned in the future.

  91.     6.  Although the correct way to exit from a diagram is via the
  92.     Diagram menu (i.e. Close, or Exit), I have left the ESC option
  93.     in place.  Frankly, I have always liked ESC as a way of dismissing
  94.     a task and don't want to give it up.

  97.     PROBLEM
  98.     We have had reports that AD won't work with certain printers.  In
  99.     almost every case the reason has been improper setup. There
  100.     really isn't much going on in our use of the printer drivers; just
  101.     use of line drawing, bold characters and a few special characters.
  102.  
  103.     FIX/WORKAROUND
  104.     Your printer MUST support the IBM PC line drawing set.  
  105.  
  106.     It may be necessary for you to either:
  107.  
  108.         o Switch your printer to an emulation that does support 
  109.           the set such as IBM Proprinter.  Be sure to use the
  110.           appropriate printer driver.
  111.  
  112.         o Set up your printer printer to to use the proper symbol
  113.           set (e.g., PC-8 on HP LaserJets).
  114.  
  115.     The Plain or ANSII printer drivers will work with many printers.
  116.  
  117.     Double check to ensure that you have selected the correct printer
  118.     driver.

  121.     PROBLEM

  133.     Under certain conditions, pressing the F5 or F2 keys would cause
  134.     a fatal internal error.

  158.     The mouse can now be used to select menu choices, place the 
  159.     cursor, manupulate the scroll bar and expand/contract diagrams
  160.     (see above).  It still cannot be used to select text.  This 
  161.     is a nasty programming problem which I hope to overcome in time.

  164.     PROBLEM
  165.     When printing a diagram without brackets and with portions of 
  166.     the diagram hidden, garbage was output.

  169.     Diagram prints properly in all modes.

  173.     When the ADDIR environment variable was not set, AD became 
  174.     confused about where to find its files. 
  175.

  177.     AD will attempt to locate its files on whatever paths are 
  178.     entered in the Options screen if ADDIR isn't set.  However, 
  179.     setting ADDIR is highly recommended. The "." directory is ok; 
  180.     ".." is not.

  184.     Occasionally, the screen does not repaint properly. The 
  185.     exact cause of this still eludes me.  It is benign however.

  188.     Press the PgUp/PgDn keys and the display will right itself.

  192.     Cursor wasn't properly positioned on return from shell.

  214.     PROBLEM
  215.     AD requires that your printer support the IBM line drawing 
  216.     character set and that it be able to reproduce certain other
  217.     characters in the IBM character set (a left arrowhead and a
  218.     small square).  Some printer emulations may be imperfect.  
  219.  
  220.     WORKAROUND
  221.     There is no workaround if your printer does not provide this
  222.     support.
  223.  
  224.     You will want to ensure that your printer is set up properly.
  225.     For instance, some recent laser printers simply require that
  226.     the appropriate symbol set is selected.
  227.  
  228.     If you don't see a printer driver for your printer, try
  229.     plain.pd;  it may do the job.
  230.

  232.     PROBLEM
  233.     Shift Left/Right-Arrow keys do not work on the cursor key 
  234.     cluster of a 101 keyboard.
  235.  
  236.     WORKAROUND
  237.     Use the numeric keypad cursor keys.

  240.     PROBLEM
  241.     It is possible to inadvertantly select the wrong printer in
  242.     Setup if you press the Enter key instead of the Tab key to
  243.     move to the next point on the screen.  The same is true of
  244.     the default language.

  246.     WORKAROUND
  247.     Be careful.
  248.
