  3.                 Using an Orienteering Compass                        
  4.                                                                      
  5. Following a bearing: Suppose the desired bearing is 140  ............
  6. 1. Turn the housing case around until 140  is at the Direction of
  7. Travel arrow (bearing arrow).                                       
  8. 2. Hold compass so Direction of Travel arrow points straight ahead of
  9. you.                                                                
  10. 3. Orient the compass: Turn  YOURSELF around in a circle until the
  11. orienting arrow on the plastic face of the dial is exactly under the
  12. needle (the North needle, usually red), pointing the same way.       
  13. 4. You are now oriented and facing 140  , the orienting arrow is
  14. pointing North.                                                      
  15. 5. To find the bearing of an object you see: line up the Direction of
  16. Travel arrow with the object and then turn the housing case until the
  17. orienting arrow and the needle are pointing the same way.  Read the
  18. bearing at the Direction of Travel arrow.

  21. 6. If you are using a map and desire good accuracy, remember to
  22. adjust for the magnetic declination (if not O ).
