Finding your way in the outdoors or town does not come
naturally to anyone. If you think about it, there is really no
trick in getting from one point to another and returning. Despite
any natural features, the only real obstacle is in our mind being
able to understand how to get "there and back again". It seems
that the ease (and necessity) of using street signs and addresses
allows us to never actually THINK about where we are actually
traveling. Then when we have to think (such as in wild country or
any unfamiliar area) we don't know how to begin.
As we start, it is important to remember that finding your way
and observing wildlife is a skill to be aquired, not something
strange or difficult. For instance, in a survival book I recently
read, the author stated that in the 100 cases he examined of people
who got lost and died in the woods, almost 1/2 could have saved
themselves by stopping, turning 180 , and walking back on their
trail to their starting point. But they became disoriented and
thought there was no solution. This tutorial will give you the
skills to find your way in any situation with confidence.
