  89.                        NATURE     OBSERVATION
  90.
  91.    In learning about finding your way, orienteering, or nature, many
  92. people have to first learn how to, OBSERVE. To really see things, or
  93. recognize and understand the meaning of the things they do see. In
  94. our society, modern conveniences have taken away much of the need to
  95. be observant. It is possible to go through much of life more or less
  96. "spaced out", letting society or comfort and habits dictate what we
  97. think, comprehend, and do. This has been noted often, but if you
  98. doubt it, find a convenient place in a mall, and for 1/2 hour closely
  99. watch the people. Look closely at their faces and movements and you
  100. will get an idea of what I am talking about.
  101.    To begin to overcome our mental barriers, the first thing to do is
  102. clear the mind and SLOW DOWN.  The woods or a park is a great place
  103. to do this. Sit back close your eyes and relax. Then think. Is there
  104. wind? How strong? From what direction? Does it carry any smell to
  105. you? Is it moist or dry? Do you hear any thing? Is that the wind
  106. through the pines or a bird gliding past? When you open your eyes,
  107. look at things as they are, not as the world has tought you they are.
