NATURE OBSERVATION
In learning about finding your way, orienteering, or nature, many
people have to first learn how to, OBSERVE. To really see things, or
recognize and understand the meaning of the things they do see. In
our society, modern conveniences have taken away much of the need to
be observant. It is possible to go through much of life more or less
"spaced out", letting society or comfort and habits dictate what we
think, comprehend, and do. This has been noted often, but if you
doubt it, find a convenient place in a mall, and for 1/2 hour closely
watch the people. Look closely at their faces and movements and you
will get an idea of what I am talking about.
To begin to overcome our mental barriers, the first thing to do is
clear the mind and SLOW DOWN. The woods or a park is a great place
to do this. Sit back close your eyes and relax. Then think. Is there
wind? How strong? From what direction? Does it carry any smell to
you? Is it moist or dry? Do you hear any thing? Is that the wind
through the pines or a bird gliding past? When you open your eyes,
look at things as they are, not as the world has tought you they are.
