  3.                       Judging  Distances                          
  4. With a map: Measure the distance on your map from where you are to
  5. your destination, using the base of your orienteering compass. Then
  6. convert it to the actual distance using the map scale.  Topographic
  7. maps are so detailed that usually you can progress from landmark to
  8. landmark without needing to know the specific distance, but if done
  9. correctly you should be able to determine the distance within a few
  10. feet.                                                               
  11. Your Pace: Count every "double-step" and then multiply by the length
  12. of your pace to determine how far you have traveled. For instance if
  13. you count every time you put left foot down and take 10 of the
  14. "double-steps" to cover 50 feet, your pace is 5 feet. Once you
  15. determine this, you would then know that you have to take 1000 paces
  16. to walk 1 mile.
