  10. enclosed herein, UTopia Software, warrants the same to be free of

  51.      The file STORM.HLP contains the data used by the help feature
  52. of this program. It can also be listed or copied to your printer.
  53. Please read it. It contains useful information. The file TIPS.TXT
  54. contains a glossary of terms and useful hurricane safety tips. It can
  55. also be listed or printed. Use the following commands:

  71.     The purpose of this program is to track hurricanes. Storm tracks
  72. can be stored in files on your disk for future use.  Storm data can be entered
  73. and reports printed on the storm's location by date and time. In
  74. addition, graphical tracking maps showing the storm's position and
  75. track can be generated.  STORM generates hardcopy plots using an Epson
  76. or Laserjet printer or an HP Plotter. You can track to one of 47 included
  77. cities or enter the coordinates of your own city.

  79.      Every effort has been made to assure that this product is free of
  80. defects, however it is provided as is and no warranty, either
  81. expressed or implied is given.  This program is the property of UTopia
  82. Software, and copyrighted 1987, 1992 by UTopia Software.

  85. enhancements and are entitled to product support.  Your registered

  87. added features:  the Storm GENIE track matcher, the ability to track

  89. storms.  These data files contain official NOAA tracks for most of the
  90. great storms of the past century.

  127.      STORM is written in Microsoft Professional BASIC and compiled on
  128. the Microsoft Professional BASIC Compiler version 7.0. Portions of the
  129. program are written in the Microsoft Macro Assembler version 5.0. Storm
  130. tracks were obtained from the NOAA archives and from the National
  131. Hurricane Center.

  137. If you have a hard disk, you may install STORM to it.  This will
  138. vastly speed up operation of the program.  To install STORM, type the
  139. following with the default drive set to your STORM PROGRAM floppy disk:
  140.  
  141.       HINSTALL [SOURCE FLOPPY DISK]  [DESTINATION HARD DISK]
  142.  
  143.  For example:  HINSTALL A: C:
  144.  
  145.  This will automatically install the STORM program files into
  146.  your specified hard disk's subdirectory \STORM (the install program
  147.  will create the subdirectory if it doesn't already exist).
  148.  
  149. You can then run STORM from the STORM Subdirectory by typing:
  150.  
  151.    STORM <ENTER>.
  152.  
  153.      The first time that you use STORM, run option 0 (Configure your
  154. System) to set STORM up for your system. Select your desired time
  155. zone, wind speed units, central pressure units, monitor type, adapter
  156. type, printer type, etc.  Your choices will be written into a file called
  157. STORM61.DFT. After you configure your system, it will then start up
  158. correctly thereafter.

  160. If you are using a hard disk, your storm data file path should be
  161. set to:
  162.  
  163. \STORM\
  164.  
  165.      If you are using floppy disks, insert the Storm Program disk in
  166. your floppy drive and leave your default files path blank.
  167.  
  168.      NOTE: If you have a Hercules Graphics Adapter and monochrome
  169. monitor, or if you try to run STORM and get an error while loading,
  170. start STORM by typing STORM-H <RETURN>. This will set up a Hercules
  171. emulator before running STORM and should solve your problems. If you
  172. use the Hercules Graphics Adapter, DO NOT use LZ or any other
  173. compression utility on STORM.EXE, or will not work with the Hercules
  174. Emulator.
  175.  
  176.      I provide over 130 storm tracks with the registered version of
  177. STORM.  These include all of the storms of Hurricane force to hit the US
  178. since 1900.  STORM 6.0 and 6.1 data files have a different structure
  179. from earlier STORM versions. Older files will not work with STORM 6.0 or
  180. 6.1.  In the rare event that you want to use a storm file which was not
  181. included, but that you had entered in an earlier version of STORM, you
  182. must either re-enter it. Optionally, you can order the complete set of
  183. over 700 storm tracks from us for $10 plus $2 shipping.

  192. *    The Tracking map has been expanded. It now extends East all the way
  193.      to the Cape Verde islands. A new map of the Eastern Pacific West to
  194.      Hawaii has been added.

  196. *    Direct printer support for Epson and Laserjet printers has been
  197.      added.  (Select printer and port in the Setup menu, press <F7>
  198.      while map is on the screen. The map will redraw without fills and
  199.      then print to your printer, then the map will redraw in its
  200.      previous state.  GRAPHICS.COM is no longer needed.
  201.  
  202. *    The number of Track-to cities has been expanded from 18 to 48,
  203.      including track-to locations in the Pacific.
  204. *    When wind speed is selected in knots, distances in all reports will
  205.      be given in Nautical miles.
  206.  
  207. *    The setup menu has been changed and updated. It is now easier to
  208.      use and more informative.
  209.  
  210. *    A bug has been fixed in the printed reports. Reports with more than
  211.      100 data points will now print correctly.
  212.  
  213. *    A bug in the plotter routine has been fixed. The Track-to city
  214.      location will now plot on Colorjet plotter.
  215.  
  216. *    The Enhanced version of Storm now allows you to input the 12, 24,
  217.      36, 48, and 72 hour NOAA predicted locations. These locations are
  218.      published on the National Weather Service Marine Hurricane Advisory.

  220. *    A printed manual for Storm is shipped with the Enhanced version of
  221.      Storm and is available for $5 with Storm.

  223.                      YES, WE DO WINDOWS!
  224.  
  225.      STORM 6.1 is compatible with Microsoft Windows 3.0. It can be run
  226. in either the standard or 386 enhanced modes, but it does require a
  227. "full screen" mode. I have included a "PIF" file for storm on the disk
  228. which will run STORM provided it is located in a subdirectory called
  229. "C:\STORM". If your copy of STORM is located elsewhere, use your Windows
  230. PIF editor to change the file paths in the PIF which I have included. I
  231. have also included a couple of "ICO" icon files which may be used in
  232. your program manager instead of the "DOS" icon. Edit the "Properties"
  233. section of your program manager and choose "change icon".

  239.      Version 6.11 is a minor revision of the very popular version
  240. 6.1.  I have enhanced the PLOT TO FILE feature to enable it to work
  241. better with WordPerfect and PageMaker, etc. You can choose the HP7475
  242. Plotter and PLOT TO FILE, then take the resulting file and bring it
  243. into the graphics feature of WordPerfect or similar program which
  244. imports HPGL data where you can size it and print it.  I have gotten
  245. great printouts from a wide range of printers not directly supported
  246. by STORM in this way.

  248.      I have included all of the storm tracks for 1991 for those of you
  249. who have asked me for them. These are the official National Hurricane
  250. Center tracks.
  251.  
  252.                      WHAT'S IN A NAME?
  253.  
  254.      If a storm reaches tropical storm intensity, the National Hurricane
  255. Center assigns it a name from a predefined list. A separate list is used
  256. for each year and the lists are repeated every seven years. The 1991
  257. list will be reused in 1997, for example. Certain names are retired if
  258. they gain notoriety as a destructive storm (i.e. Hugo 1989, Carla 1961,
  259. and Camille 1969). The letters Q,U,X,Y, and Z are not used because of
  260. the scarcity of names beginning with these letters. The U.S. acts as the
  261. clearing house for storm information for several countries, therefore
  262. the names have an international flavor. The names are selected from
  263. library sources and voted upon during meetings of the World
  264. Meteorological Organization.
