  4.      Desktop Publishing with WordPerfect for 5.0 and 5.1

  9.      I decided to review this book for a couple of reasons. First, I have
  10.      WordPerfect 5.0 and second, I have done some publishing using
  11.      commercial programs such as First Publisher 3.0 and Express Publisher.
  12.      After using WordPerfect, I am very pleased with the results. I have a
  13.      Cordata XT compatible at home with a Star NX-1000 Rainbow and a AST
  14.      486 with a Laserjet III at work. I like using my home system for the
  15.      ability of using color. Unfortunately, the book doesn't cover color
  16.      printing,  probably because most publishing is in black and white.
  17.      The book is very well written with easy to follow instructions and
  18.      plenty of samples to compare your work to as you are creating your
  19.      publication. It tells you what key to press and the response you
  20.      should get. For example, some books will tell you to select fonts,
  21.      this book will say "Press (CTRL-F8)(FONT)" which is excellent for
  22.      novice users of WordPerfect who like myself need a keypad aid or chart
  23.      to remember what keys are what.

  25.      The organization of the book is arranged very orderly starting with
  26.      an overview and proceeding on to chapter two which covers basic
  27.      publishing fundamentals. Chapter four is one of my personal favorites,
  28.      using graphics. Using the utilities that come with WordPerfect, I find
  29.      that I can screen capture about any graphic and use it in my document.
  30.      Although the book doesn't cover capture and conversion, it does cover
  31.      in detail about rotating, sizing and placement of graphics within
  32.      your publication. I liked the part about adding shading to a box for
  33.      a background of your graphic. It also covers creating a box and adding
  34.      shading such as a headline or sidebar that you would find in more
  35.      costly publications. Also covered is creating a table of contents;
  36.      tracking of tables, charts and graphs; and creating an index;
  37.      footnotes and creating a master document. A master document is for
  38.      when you are working on a large document and if you delete a paragraph
  39.      or enter new words, the repagination process will slow you down
  40.      considerably. The same thing happens when spell checking a large
  41.      document. The master document feature will allow you to create a
  42.      relatively small master document that includes numerous subdocuments
  43.      such as individual chapters in a book.

  45.      Section two covers design tips and tricks and gives information on
  46.      creating flyers, letterheads, business cards, newsletters, catalogs,
  47.      menus, invoices, purchase orders and price lists. After using both
  48.      commercial publishing packages and WordPerfect, I would use
  49.      WordPerfect for the majority of my work for the following reasons;
  50.      more typefaces and fonts available, shading, the features normally
  51.      incorporated in a word processing package such as a spell checker and
  52.      formatting options. I don't have access to expensive publishing
  53.      packages such as Aldus, but I firmly believe that WordPerfect can do
  54.      just about any publishing project that you might have and this book
  55.      would make a welcome edition to any library.
