LaserMax Check Maker -- April 7, 1993
BENEFITS & FEATURES
o Saves money: Uses any Hewlett Packard LaserJet+ compatible
printer to create printed checks for a fraction of the cost
of commercially printed checks. (Blank safety paper costs
less than $30 per thousand sheets!)
o Matches your software: Supports five popular types of
checks including the Quicken Classic Laser Standard and
Quicken Classic Laser Voucher styles.
o Convenience: If you have multiple bank accounts, you will
no longer need to keep separate preprinted checks for each
one. Nor will you ever need to change the printer check
stock when you change bank accounts. LaserMax can even
print your signatures and/or logos on your checks.
o Security: Never keep negotiable blank checks lying around.
Use LaserMax to print only as many checks as you need at one
time. There is no need to lock up the blank stock. (It's
only paper.)
WHAT IS THE LASERMAX CHECK MAKER?
The LaserMax Check Maker is a program that prints MICR encoded
checks on any ordinary HP LaserJet+ compatible printer. It can
print blank Quicken Classic Laser Standard and Quicken Classic
Laser Voucher checks. It can also print the more impressive UBCC
style voucher checks just like professional accountants.
LaserMax can use the Elfring MICR soft font (included), the
Hewlett-Packard MICR system, the CHEQsys MICR system, or the UBCC
font cartridge to MICR encode the checks. It also can print your
company name and address as well as your bank's information using
several different typefaces.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
The software requires an HP LaserJet+ (or later) compatible laser
printer. (Xerox printers will NOT work.) Also, if you use the
Elfring MICR option you will need a magnetic toner cartridge, and
your laser printer must have enough memory to hold the soft
fonts. (The original HP LaserJet will not work with soft fonts.)
With the LaserMax software all laser printers can produce
acceptable checks using the Courier typefaces, but if your laser
has any of the several other supported typefaces it can produce
better looking, more impressive, checks.

INSTALLATION
If you received this software other than on a diskette, copy all
of the files contained in the archive file onto a diskette in
drive A:.
Step 1: On the disk where you want the program to be create a
directory for LaserMax Check Maker. For example, enter
"MD LB".
Step 2: Enter "CD LB" to go to that directory.
Step 3: Enter "COPY A:\*.*" to bring all the files into that
directory.
Step 4: Enter LB to start the program. Just follow the menu
choices. (Don't worry about making any mistakes. You
can always change anything later.)
SIGNATURES AND LOGOS
You can use the signature macros provided by Orbit Enterprises to
make LaserMax sign your checks for you. (See below for ordering
information.) You can also use their logo macros to print your
logos on your checks. The macros are actually programs for your
laser printer that tell it how to draw either your signature or
your logo. When you receive an Orbit macro it will come with
complete and simple instructions on how to install (and
uninstall) the macros in your laser printer. Once any macros are
installed in your printer they will be identified with a number
and you can then tell LaserMax how to use them.
For example: Suppose you have a signature macro from Orbit
Enterprises and you have given it your lucky number, 1066. Then
if you want to print that signature with bank account 17 all you
need to do is to change the Bank Account for LaserMax account 17
so that the "Signature macro" is 1066. You can then print a test
check to see that the signature is positioned exactly right. If
it isn't you can then change the "Horizontal Adj" to move it left
or right or the "Vertical Adj" to move it up or down. That's it.
Setting up logo macros is just as simple. In fact the setup for
logo macros is identical except that you will enter the "Logo
macro number" instead of the "Signature macro" in the bank
controls.
You can use the same signature or logo macro in all of your bank
accounts, or you can use different ones for each LaserMax bank

account.
Important note: When you position your signature macro on your
check make sure that the bottom of the signature is at least 5/8"
from the bottom of the check. Except for the MICR codes the
regulations prohibit any magnetic (laser) printing in the last
5/8" of the check.

LaserMax Check Maker -- April 7, 1993
The HP MICR system is available through HP dealers. It works for
LaserJet II, IID, III, & IIID printers and consists of two parts:
Toner cartridge P/N 92295M ($169), and
Font cartridge P/N 36596A Opt.612 ($249).
This font cartridge will produce MICR characters in the HP4,
but HP does not yet manufacture a MICR toner cartridge for
the HP4. Further HP is currently working on a separate (600
dpi) MICR system (font and toner) for the HP4.
The UBCC MICR font cartridge is available from:
UBCC (Andrea Ellis-Garen) - Palatine, IL - 800 762 8222
708 358 9400.
This font cartridge DOES NOT require a magnetic toner
cartridge so it pays for itself very quickly. There is some
debate about printing MICR checks without special MICR
toner. Although ordinary toner does not meet the banking
specifications, many UBCC customers have used normal toner
with the UBCC font without problems. For more information
read the contents of the file UBCCMICR.DOC.
The Elfring MICR soft font is available from:
Elfring Consulting, Inc. - St. Charles, IL - 708 377 3520
Fax: 708 377 6402
The Elfring soft font included with this software can only
be used in conjunction with this software. Any other use is
strictly prohibited. The cost to obtain a complete license
to use this MICR soft font is currently $35.

NOTES
The Elfring MICR soft font included with this software is
licensed from Elfring Consulting, Inc. 4N899 West Mary Drive, St.
Charles, IL 60175.
HP recommends that you not laser print twice on the same sheet of
paper. Section 2 (Media Selection Guidelines and Specifications)
of the HP LaserJet Printer Family Paper Specification Guide,
"Things to Avoid" includes media that has already been printed
with a photocopier or an HP LaserJet printer. (Refer to page
2-22 in Manual Part No. 5002-1801 dated Oct 92.) If you do not
have this publication, you can call HP Distribution at
(303)353-7650 and request it. You will need to have a printer
serial number available. Other reasons for this recommendation
are contained in the document named DUPLEX.LJ found in the
CompuServe HP Peripherals library. For your convenience it is
reproduced here in the file HPWARN.DOC.
The most important aspect of MICR check printing is the
positioning of the MICR characters along the bottom of your
checks. You can tell if the positioning is correct by putting a
LaserMax check against one of your old checks making sure to
align the BOTTOM (not TOP) and the RIGHT (not LEFT) edges. Then
look at the MICR line to see if they match exactly. (The only
difference should be the check number.) If the check image is
not exactly positioned you can use the General Controls for
Horizontal and Vertical Adjustment to place it precisely.
If you choose a typeface but don't see that typeface in the
printing of the company name or bank name, make sure that your
printer actually can support that typeface. (Only the Elfring
MICR soft font is supplied with this software.)
If you are printing checks to the DISKFILE and using the Elfring
soft font you will need to print at least one check directly to
the printer before attempting to print the DISKFILE. Otherwise,
you will not have the MICR font available. (Our licensing
agreement prohibits including the soft font in the DISKFILE.) For
a similar reason you may not use a printer on the AUX port.

LaserMax Check Maker -- April 7, 1993
PERMANENT LICENSE
LaserMax Check Maker is distributed under the Shareware marketing
system. The Shareware concept allows you, the user, to use a
program on a trial basis to determine if it meets your needs. If
you find the program useful and wish to continue using it, you
are required to pay a license or registration fee to the author.
If you received the LaserMax Check Maker through a distribution
service and paid a small fee, this does not constitute payment
for the LaserMax Check Maker. You have simply paid for the
distribution service. The $3.00 or $5.00 or whatever pays for the
diskette, duplication and handling and does NOT constitute
payment for the programs contained on the diskette.
LaserMax Check Maker license and registration costs $46 and
entitles you to USE only one copy of it. That is, you may install
it on your home, office and laptop computers so long as only one
copy is ever in use at a time.
The file INVOICE.DOC contains an invoice which you may print and
use in order to license and register the software. Just fill it
out and mail it with a check. With registration you'll receive
the latest version of the LaserMax Check Maker and six months
support. We'll also notify you of any program updates and new
products. Significantly reduced prices on other products are
available to licensees.
You may also call (518) 523-8920 to register using MasterCard or
Visa.
The Shareware system is dependent upon honest people. If you use
a Shareware program and have not registered with the author after
the evaluation period, you are helping to destroy the viability
of the Shareware concept. If you appreciate the ability to try
software before you buy it, then we encourage you to register
EVERY Shareware program you use. Registration of Shareware
products ensures the existence of quality, low-cost software.
