DISCLAIMER:
This program is provided "AS IS", without any warranty, expressed
or implied. This includes without limitation, the fitfulness to a
particular purpose, application, and warranties of merchantability.
PART 1.0 INSTALLATION
Installation of BothSides is very simple. For best results, just
copy the two files, BOTH.EXE and BOTH.DOC into a single directory
which has been included in your PATH environment variable. The PATH
environment variable is usually set when you boot your computer.
There should be a line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root directory
of your boot drive which says something like: PATH C:\UTIL;C:\DOS.
This is your path statement. In this case, you could copy the two
files into C:\UTIL. This way, you could run BothSides from anywhere
on your system by just typing "BOTH". The file BOTH.DOC is the
documentation for BothSides and is unformatted. You might want to use
BothSides to format it and send it to your printer. Specify 66 line
unformatted text by specifying a title to be printed at the bottom of
each page.
PART 1.1 SPEEDING UP OPENING SCREEN (REG'D VER ONLY)
If you would prefer that the opening program screen would not
display in its unique but slow manner, and you have the ENHANCED
version of the program, you can force BothSides to display the opening
screen instantaneously. Just rename BOTH.EXE to any other name as
long as the name does not contain the sequence "BOTH.EXE". "BTH.EXE"
would be acceptable, "RBOTH.EXE" would not, because it still contains
this sequence. When the ENHANCED version starts, it checks to see
what it is called. If it finds that its name does not contain
"BOTH.EXE", it displays the opening screen instantaneously, otherwise
it displays using its normal special effect. We thought this might be
easier than having the user add a switch to the end of the BothSides
command line.
PART 1.2 USING THE BOTHSIDES HELP UTILITY
Help for BothSides is in the form of the ability to view BOTH.DOC
from within the program. To view this file, you must be in an edit
field. You are in an edit field when you are prompted to type
information into a reverse video field. In addition, BOTH.DOC must be
in the same directory as the file BOTH.EXE. For best results, follow
the directions given in "PART 1.0. INSTALLATION".
To view the help file, press the F1 key. Use the PgUp, PgDn, and
Arrow keys to navigate through the file. When you wish to exit the
help screen, press the ESC key.
PART 2.0 WHAT IT DOES
BothSides was written to enable the printing of ASCII (or DOS)
text files in such a way that the text would be printed to "BothSides"
of the printer paper. An ASCII or DOS text file is a file containing
no word processor codes etc. It must be straight text which is
readable by using the DOS "TYPE" command. Your word processor must be
capable of saving to this format. Saving in Wordstar's "nondocument
mode" is one such example. In WordPerfect, you save it as a "DOS Text
File" by pressing CTRL-F5. PC-Write saves files in this format by
default. See your word processor's documentation to see how to save
your files in ASCII format.
While there have been several utilities around which could do
this in the simplest sense, they would work only on a specific type of
text file. Using them on shareware documentation would result in
having the footer in the middle of the page and the table of contents
would no longer be relevant.
BothSides has the capability to handle the three types of
pagination formats. This means that you can print your shareware or
any other documentation whether it has been formatted with so many
lines per page, with formfeed or pagebreak characters, or YOU can do
the formatting if it has not been formatted at all!
When you create your own text files, you can use BothSides to
format the text for printing on both sides of the paper and place the
title of the document and the page number at the bottom of the page.
BothSides has the added capability also not found in the other
utilities of sending its output directly to the printer! If you do
not wish the output sent to the printer, but to files, it will create
from FILENAME.TXT, FILENAME.ONE, (containing the odd-numbered pages),
and FILENAME.TWO, (containing the even-numbered pages).
To refer to the three pagination schemes, we will use the
following terms:
UNFORMATTED -- This is continuous text without headers or
footers and containing no pagebreaks. (If it
has pagebreaks BothSides will remove them.)
LNS/PG FORMATTED -- This is text which begins a new page every
lines/page lines. It may contain headers and
footers, page numbers etc.
FORMFEED FORMATTED -- This text contains formfeed (or pagebreak)
control characters which cause the printer to
advance to the top of the next page when they
are encountered in the text. This character is
one of the 31 ASCII control characters, namely
CTRL-L, and has the ASCII value of 12. It has
the appearance of the "ankh" symbol.
When running BothSides, you will need to tell it which of these
methods has been used to paginate the text file to be processed. If
the file has been formfeed formatted, you may use one of the other
methods as well as any formfeeds encountered while formatting with
either of the lines/page methods will be removed. Use caution as this
may very well cause any headers and footers to become misindexed,
causing them to appear somewhere other than at the top or bottom of
the page.
BothSides will examine the file for you to determine whether the
file contains formfeeds or not. You may then use this information to
determine which method to use.
When BothSides finishes its job when printing to files, it will
tell you how many sheets you will need to print the document so that
you can be sure you have enough paper to finish.
No matter where the source file is located, the two output files
will be located in the current directory.
After running BothSides, print FILENAME.ONE, then turn the paper
over and print FILENAME.TWO on the back side. That's all there is to
it!
The DOS commands for printing a file from the DOS prompt are as
follows:
COPY FILENAME.ONE PRN or
COPY FILENAME.ONE LPT1 (for parallel printers)
COPY FILENAME.ONE COM1 (for serial printers)
or if DOS' PRINT.COM is available:
PRINT FILENAME.ONE
...and then turn the paper over and insert page one. Page
two and the following even-numbered pages will be printed on this
side.
PART 2.1 WHAT IT DOES NOT DO
Some of BothSide's supporters have asked how to perform such
functions with BothSides as the changing of margins. Changing the
margins of your text files is an operation best left to your word
processor. It is beyond the scope and purpose of this utility to
format the margins of text files. Its sole purpose is to enable you to
take text files which you have previously formatted with your word
processor and print them to both sides of the page. There are many
features which could conceivably be added to this utility which would
overlap those already contained in most word processors. This utility
was written to fill a need which word processors do not fill.
If you have ideas for additional functions which BothSides could
perform, or indeed you have an idea for an unrelated utility, please
let us know about it.
PART 2.2 READYING THE PRINTER
When using either lines/page option with continuous feed
printers, align the print head with the very top line of the page.
When processing FF (formfeed) paginated text files, look at the file
to get an idea of the top and bottom margins used in the file and then
position the printhead at the approximate position on the page where
the top margin would begin.
When using a continuous sheet fed printer, begin with an
additional sheet of paper ahead of what will be page one for easy
insertion when you print the other side, and it's a good idea to leave
an extra sheet at the end so that your printer doesn't stop and give
the "Out of paper" warning in the middle of the last page.
PART 3.0 SENDING OUTPUT DIRECTLY TO THE PRINTER
BothSides has the unique capability to send its output directly
to the printer. This option is not available from the command line.
Just invoke the program without the parameters and follow the prompts.
At the printer PORT prompt, specify LPT1, LPT2 or LPT3. If you have a
serial printer attached to COM1 or COM2, use DOS' MODE.EXE or MODE.COM
to reconfigure it to LPT1 or LPT2 and then specify LPTn. If, for some
reason you are unable to to do this, just have it create the two files
and copy them to your COM port. You will also be prompted for a
control code string to be sent to the printer when it prints the text.
Enter the decimal values for the codes ie. 27 120 48 each separated
from the next by a space, (this string instructs an Epson printer to
print in draft mode).
When the program finishes printing the odd numbered pages, the
program will pause so that you may turn off the printer and reinsert
the paper with the back side facing up. You must turn off the printer
in order to reindex TOF (top of form)! Don't worry that the control
string will be lost when you turn the printer off. The control string
will be sent again before sending the even numbered pages.
PART 4.0 TERMINATING BOTHSIDES
To abort the program at any time, just press ESC until you have
backed out of the entire program. If this key is pressed during the
actual file conversion process, the page in process will be completed
and then the program will terminate. On occasion, you may mistakenly
specify "FF" for a file with no formfeed characters. In this case,
because the BothSides looks for the formfeed character to signal the
end of the page, it will write the entire file to page one. The ESC
key will not work here. Press Control "C" (while holding down the
"CTRL" key, press "C") and the program will terminate immediately
without respect to the part of the page in process.
The ESC key allows you to process just a part of a document, yet
ending with a full page. As it begins to process the final page you
want, just press ESC. It will finish the page, then terminate. This
is especially convenient for FF paginated files in which the pages are
clearly delimited.
PART 5.0 UNFORMATTED TEXT
Syntax: BOTH FILENAME.TXT Lines/Page The Title of the Document
Unformatted text is text which has not been formatted with either
the ^L formfeed character or with n lines per page. This is
continuous text with no pagebreaks, no pagenumbers, and no table of
contents. This documentation is an example of unformatted text. Why
don't you try it out on this documentation? Just type:
BOTH BOTH.DOC 66 The BothSides Text Formatter
What the unformatted lines/page line option will do is format
your text by printing three blank lines to the top of each page, print
(lines/page - 8) lines of text, print two blank lines, print the title
and page number on a single line, and then print two more blank lines
to complete the page. This is a very handy way to format your own
documents you have created with your word processor!
This option is selected by specifying the number of lines per
page (for example: 66) as the option and adding a title for your text
to the command line. A title MUST be specified for this option! If
you do not wish to use a title, but wish to have page numbers inserted
into the document, specify "NONE" as the title. Consequently, you may
not title your document "NONE".
You may use this option to format files containing formfeed
pagebreaks, as all formfeeds will be removed during processing. Be
aware that any previous page format will be lost during processing as
page numbers, etc. may no longer be relevant.
Prepare the printer by positioning the printhead at the very top
line of the page, as several blank lines will be printed first!
PART 5.1 LINES/PAGE FORMATTED TEXT
Syntax: BOTH FILENAME.TXT LINES/PAGE
Lines/page Formatting is text which has n lines for every page.
There are no formfeed characters (^L, ASCII "12") in the text. Much
of shareware documentation is formatted this way.
Frequently this type of documentation will include page numbers,
table of contents, and perhaps simple text based graphics which you
wouldn't want broken up between pages.
If the document you are working with is formatted this way, you
must use the Lines/Page option to format the document. Otherwise you
will have blank spaces in the middle of the document and any page
numbers and table of contents will be incorrect. Using the Lines/Page
option alone will leave the page numbers alone, and the table of
contents will still be relevant. YOU MUST NOT SPECIFY A TITLE FOR
THIS FORMAT!
You may also use this option on documentation which has formfeed
characters if you wish as any formfeed characters will be removed
during processing. Be aware that page numbers etc. will probably no
longer be positioned correctly on the page if you do this.
To prepare the printer, position the printhead at the very top
line of the page as all Lines/Page lines will be printed to each page.
PART 5.2 FF FORMATTED TEXT
Syntax: BOTH FILENAME.TXT FF
FF formatted text is text which uses the ^L or ASCII "12"
character as a pagebreak. When the printer receives this character,
it advances to the top of the next page before printing any following
characters. For text which has been formatted this way, you must
specify the "FF" option to select this. You may not specify a title
for this option! When BothSides reaches a FF in the document, it ends
the page there and begins the next page. The files it creates will
still be formatted with formfeeds and any table of contents and page
numbers will still be relevant.
PART 5.2.1 IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS WHEN USING "FF" OPTION:
To prepare the printer in this case it may not be wise to
position the printhead at the very top line of the page. This is
because there may only be much less than 66 text lines per page. The
text would immediately be printed to the top line of the page, and
when the page break is reached, a large gap would appear at the bottom
of each page. Examine the text file to determine the size of the top
margin, and position the print head accordingly.
After printing FILENAME.ONE, having selected the "FF" option, it
is advisable to re-initialize the printer, as any turning of the
printer roller during the insertion of the paper for printing
FILENAME.TWO will cause the TOF to misindex, thus beginning a new page
somewhere other than the top of the sheet.
PART 6.0 RUNNING BOTHSIDES WITHOUT THE COMMAND LINE
Syntax: BOTH [/B]
If you prefer not to use the command line, you may start the
program by typing "BOTH <Carriage Return>". (Specifying /B on the
command line forces black and white colors to be used.) You will then
be prompted for all of the information needed to process the file. If
at any time you wish to change the answer to a previous prompt,
(Registered version only) just press the ESC key until the screen you
wish to change appears. To quit the program, press ESC until you have
backed completely out of the program.
Most of the information entered into the several edit fields will
be saved to BOTH.CFG in the directory in which the BothSides program
resides, and will be the default answers in future sessions until
changed. This should save a lot of typing time and make the program
more convenient to use. (Registered version only.)
If you specify the number of lines per page for the option, you
will then be prompted for a title for printing on each page. If the
text is LINES/PAGE FORMATTED, you will not want to specify a title;
leave it blank. If it is UNFORMATTED, then you must specify a title to
select this option.
It is not wise to format unformatted text with any other than the
UNFORMATTED option. Doing so would print text from the top line to
the bottom line of every page and perhaps writing on the perforation
of continuous feed sheets. If an error occurs due to an improper
filename, you will be told of the error and prompted again for the
filename and options. Just press "ESC" to quit during the prompts.
If an error occurs during a command line startup of BothSides,
you will be prompted for the filename, options, and title.
While the file is being processed, you will see a display at the
bottom of the screen giving you a report on the page number and the
line being processed on that page.
You may press "ESC" (the ESCape key) to abort during the
formatting process. When you press "ESC" at this time, the current
page will be finished and the program will cease. This allows you to
process only a fixed number of pages, should you so choose. If you
press "ESC" while BothSides is processing page 5, the program will
shut down when it reaches the end of page 5. Again, if you need to
"break out" of BothSides immediately, pressing "Control-C" will
accomplish it without finishing the page.
PART 7.0 RUNNING BOTHSIDES WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT!
We cannot recommend running BOTHSIDES without paying for it for
the following reason...
PART 7.1 THE SPELLBOUND! SHAREWARE CURSE...
You are granted a limited license to use the program for 5 days.
If after 5 days, you continue to use the program, you MUST register to
continue to use it. If you do not register, you may give copies to
friends and upload it to bulletin boards, but you must not continue to
make use of the program.
BOTHSIDES IS NOT DISABLED IN ANY WAY!
While the program WILL continue to run normally, changes WILL
occur in the user! You will have changed from a law-abiding
upstanding citizen to what has certainly become the lowest esteemed
member of polite society -- a "Violator of the Shareware Principle"...
If you use the program and enjoy it, send at least the $10.00 to
register the shareware version. You will not receive the enhanced
version for the $10.00 registration, but you will be legal! If you
would like the enhanced version, please send $16.95. If you fail to
send at least the $10.00, you will fall into the snare of the
SPELLBOUND! Software Super Duper New and Improved, All Purpose
Shareware curse. When we at SPELLBOUND! decided to come up with our
own curse, we looked in the yellow pages for a "medium". Although it
seems like a contradiction in terms, they are very "rare", so we had
to settle for a "Weldon". Weldon is not a medium -- but his rates
were reasonable. (We think Weldon IS a little "Well done" due to
forgetting to close the microwave door one too many times.) He agreed
to do the job for mentioning his name in this documentation. This is
what he was able to come up with...
SPELLBOUND! Software's Super Duper, New and Improved, All Purpose
Shareware Curse!
by Weldon
(He never said we had to mention his last name!)
May...
...your pickup blow a head gasket,
...your toilet back up,
...your shrubbery turn brown,
...your boomerang not return
...your spouse become a Hare Krishna
...your dog mistake your leg for a hydrant
...your mother in law move in, permanently
...you develop the following maladies:
prickly heat
gingivitus
the heartbreak of psoriasis
halitosis
irregularity
painful warts
And worst of all...
May the most annoying man in America do a show from your
livingroom on:
"Users who secretly refuse to register shareware and the mothers
who raised them. One person reveals the whole sordid story 'I
refused to register BOTHSIDES' -- next Geraldo"
Can you imagine how cheaply we're letting you off? You could run
up thousands of dollars in medical, psychiatric, plumbing, auto
repair, dry cleaning, and dental costs, the legal costs of
deprogramming your spouse... and BOOMERANG REPAIR! (Do you know how
hard it is to find an HONEST boomerang repairman? Yet they keep
getting return business?! I got so frustrated with ours I tried to
throw it away. I gave up after 3 hours.)
$10.00 can save you all this heartache! $16.95 will save you
heartache and get you the enhanced version as well!
PART 7.2 INDUCEMENTS TO REGISTER!
To reward you for your honesty in registering your copy of
BothSides, for a $16.95 registration, we will send to you the very
latest enhanced version of BothSides along with some other popular
SPELLBOUND! Software shareware products.
The shareware version is not disabled in any way. It fully
performs the operation of printing any text file to both sides of the
paper. The shareware version keeps track of how many files you have
processed so that you can see how useful the program has been to you.
The enhanced version just contains some conveniences which can
make the task easier to reward you for your support. It is our
strong conviction that the honest user SHOULD receive something of
value to reward his kindness. The enhanced version includes these
EXTRA features:
1.) Has no shareware messages at all!
2.) Saves all of your settings, field entries, File Selection Box Sort
option etc. for future use.
3.) Allows you to move backward through the program with the ESC key
to make changes to previously edited fields.
4.) You may "browse" (view the contents of) files from the File
Selection Box.
5.) You can optionally speed up the opening information
screen if you desire.
6.) It restores your original DOS screen when the program exits.
For information on these enhancements, see HISTORY.DOC.
If you are a previously registered user of the enhanced version,
just send the form below and $10.00. If you previously registered
multiple copies of BothSides, you only need one copy this time. You
also qualify for the SPELLBOUND! Director offer detailed below.
In addition, you may optionally purchase a single copy of the
SPELLBOUND! Director menuing and file management system (not
shareware) for each copy of BothSides you register or upgrade for over
70% off the regular price ($34.95) or just $16.95! To see some of
the features of the SPELLBOUND! Director, see "PART 9.0 THE
SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR (ATT: VARS, CONSULTANTS)" at the end of this
documentation.
You may send the following form to your printer or print the
file, "ORDER.FRM" included in this package.

PART 8.0 PROBLEMS
PROBLEM:
"FILENAME.ONE and FILENAME.TWO were created, but the entire
document was printed to FILENAME.ONE and it was all printed to one
page."
SOLUTION:
You specified the "FF" option on a page without Formfeeds.
BothSides looks for a formfeed as it prints a page to the file. When
it finds one, it immediately begins printing the next page. If your
document contains no formfeeds (^L or Ascii "12" characters), then
BothSides assumes that it all belongs on one page. You must specify
either Lines/Page, or Lines/Page Title" for this type of file.
PROBLEM:
"I can't seem to get the program to work with my printer!"
SOLUTION:
Make sure that your printer is connected to a parallel printer
port or that you have used the DOS MODE command to redirect your
serial printer to LPT1. Do not use the "PRN" device, you must specify
one of : LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3.
If none of this seems to work, you may still send the output to
the two files and print them from DOS.
PROBLEM:
"When I run the program on files created with my word processor,
they come out with all kinds of garbage in them."
SOLUTION:
This is because your word processor did not save the file as an
ASCII or DOS Text Tile. Your word processor stores formatting codes
within the text file. It is these formatting codes that you perceive
as "garbage". Check the documentation for your word processor to see
how to save your document as an ASCII or Dos Text File. For example,
in WordPerfect, press CTRL-F5 to save in Dos Text mode, and follow the
directions.
PART 8.1 TELEPHONE SUPPORT
If you encounter any problems in your use of BothSides, PLEASE
look at the previous section to see if your problem has been resolved
there.
Unlimited telephone support is an incentive to register and is
available solely to registered users of the program -- we do not work
for free! Having offered support to nonregistered users for two
years, we discovered that only 1 out of ten users whose problems were
resolved and who gave us their word that they would register, ever
did... Many software companies CHARGE you for support even after you
have bought the product! We only ask that you pay us for the product
before you ask us to spend time working with you on the phone.
Just call SPELLBOUND! Software at (517)-828-6520. Please have
your telephone near the computer and have the contents of
AUTOEXEC.BAT, and CONFIG.SYS ready so that we can work out your
problem knowledgeably. Support for registered users is always free
and friendly!
PART 9.0 THE SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR, MENU, FILE MANAGER
+--------------------------------------------------------------------+
| The SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR Menu and File Management System |
+--------------------------------------------------------------------+
The SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR is a complete Menuing and File Management
system which was designed to be ideal for installation on new machines
and over the counter sales by resellers or consultants under their own
company name. For example Mainstream Computers in Alma, Michigan
sells the program as "The MAINSTREAM MENU SYSTEM". The SPELLBOUND!
Director is not being marketed as shareware.
INDIVIDUAL USERS
If after examining the features below, you decide that you would
like a copy of the SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR, you may purchase a single
copy for $34.95, or a site license according to the schedule below.
RESELLERS AND CONSULTANTS
As a reseller or consultant, you are called upon many times to
provide support to novice users of your PC systems. The SPELLBOUND!
DIRECTOR provides a very simple to use interface between the user and
the operating system. The File Manager allows him to easily create,
rename, and remove directories; copy, move, and delete multiple files;
handles creation, extraction and viewing of ZIP format files created
by PKWare's PKZIP programs; while executing DOS commands or shelling
to DOS from within the program.
Each time a program is run, as the program is loading, a box is
displayed at the top of the screen which tells the user 1. The item
name as chosen from the menu, 2. the assembled command line which has
been handed to DOS to run the program, and 3. The resident directory.
This will help your customers to become acquainted with DOS while
insulating them from its cryptic commands.
The Menu System will appear in every way to be your own product.
YOUR NAME APPEARS IN THE INTRODUCTION SCREEN, and it appears
continuously at the top of the screen while the Menu is running.
EVERY TIME YOUR CUSTOMER TURNS ON HIS MACHINE, YOUR COMPANY IS
ADVERTISED!
COMMENTS FROM SOME OF OUR CUSTOMERS:
"I've worked with a number of other menus with my clients. I prefer
this over all of them."
Charles Lockwood, owner TopComp Computer Systems
Distributes as "TopComp Menuing System"

"Your menu program is excellent! Being new to PCs, the setup was very
easy and reasonably comfortable. I found IBM's Menu program
confusing, but yours was very easy to learn. I enjoy it very much!"
Dan Singell, Pastor,
