JTFOX 3.60 Introduction
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Welcome to JTFOX 3.60.
First off, I would like to thank you for trying JTFOX 3.60 as the
directory colourizer for your BBS, and hope that you find it
worthwhile registering. JTFOX 3.60 is approximately 3 years of
work, (including the beta code for v:1.0-2.6 and 3.0 which was
reused, in part, in this version).
With all the changes that have occurred with JTFOX, the goal
remains the same, which is to provide the SysOp with an efficient
method of sprucing up his directory files and creating a list of
all the files on the BBS. All this of course with a minimum of
time and effort by the part of the system operator.
Beta Testers.
I would like to thank the following boards for helping me beta
test the earlier versions of JTFOX.
■ Access America Online Tim Yandell
■ Sigma Industries BBS Randy Sun
■ The Dragstrip BBS Ronnie King
Acknowledgments also go to:
Thomas G. Hanlin III for his excellent routines in ADVBAS.
Microsoft for their great modular design of QuickBasic.
Clark Development Co. for incorporating Colour Codes.

JTFOX 3.60 Hardware/Software Requirements
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
JTFOX 3.60 functions under the same requirements that PCBoard
14.5 does. These include the following:
■ MS-DOS compatible computer. 100% compatible preferred.
■ At least 100k of free RAM
■ A hard disk is recommended.
■ PCBoard 14.5a by Clark Development Corporation.
This manual assumes that you have minimal working knowledge of
DOS and personal computers as such. Knowing a few things about
PCBoard 14.5 is also quite helpful but not of utmost importance.
If you feel lost, check your DOS manual or give me a call at the
indicated numbers.

│ Chapter 3 - Installation │
└────────────────────────────┘
JTFOX 3.60 Installation
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
JTFOX 3.xx, unlike it's predecessors, is very easy to set up, but
must be done properly, if it is to work properly. On the
distribution disk, you should have the following files.
■ JTFOX360.EXE
■ SETUP360.EXE
■ README.1ST
■ JTFOX360.TXT
■ HISTORY.DOC
■ CONVERT.EXE
If any of these files are missing, you may pick them up on my
BBS, indicated at the end of the manual.
In our examples of installation, we will be using C:\PCB\JTFOX30
as the location of all JTFOX 3.60 files.
1) Create the required subdirectory. If you wish you may put
JTFOX 3.60 in the same directory as PCBoard, but you will
find that things will get crowded quite quickly.
2) Unzip the files contained in JTFOX360.ZIP in the desired
subdirectory.
This is basically the brunt of the work involved in setting up
JTFOX. The remainder of the task will be handled by the setup
program.
NOTE: If you have been using JTFOX 3.xx, you can just `drop-in'
the new version in the JTFOX directory and bypass all further
installation steps. You must however remember to run CONVERT on
your configuration files, or SETUP360 will simply ignore your old
configuration.
Example:
CONVERT /JTFOX.CNF
This will rename your old configuration file to JTFOX.BAK and
will build your new file using your old parameters. You may do
this for each and every configuration file that you have.

└───────────────────────┘
JTFOX 3.60 SETUP
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
■ Running SETUP360
Starting with version 3.60, the CNAMES file no longer needs
to be converted into a JTFOX format. Both SETUP and JTFOX
will read the CNAMES.@@@ file directly. There are however
two parameters that can be passed to the setup program upon
execution. They are /CONF:xxx and /MONO. The first one
will allow you to edit more than one configuration file
(this works only for the registered version) and the second
parameter can be used by owners of Monochrome cards.
examples:
SETUP360 /CONF:1 <--Create JTFOX1.CNF
SETUP360 /MONO <--Runs in Monochrome
SETUP360 <--Default Conference

To select one of the 6 choices, you may move the highlight bar
using the up and down arrow keys. To select the currently
highlighted option press return.
■ Exiting Setup.
To exit the setup program, press ESC from the main menu
screen. A window will open, asking you whether you wish to
save the configuration. There are three choices:
Y- Yes. Save this configuration. JTFOX will check the
directories indicated in your Paths & Filenames, and will
create any missing directories. It will report any problems
it had (if any) in creating these directories. JTFOX cannot
at this point create multi-level directories. That is to
say, it cannot create the directory C:\PCB\JTFOX\DATA if the
directory JTFOX or PCB do not exist.
N- No. Do not save this configuration. JTFOX will exit
without checking any of the information, or saving the
configuration.
O- Oops. You might have pressed ESC accidentally, and this is
the option that will allow you to continue your
configuration of JTFOX.

The Paths & Filenames screen, is used to indicate to JTFOX
where some key files, as well as important directories are
placed. None of these fields should be blank, as it may
cause JTFOX to malfunction.

KEYS: * Up-Down arrows <--move highlight bar
* ESC <-- Exit to main screen
■ Path & Name of Caller File:
As a rule, JTFOX will try to log all it's activities in the
Caller log. This makes it easier to spot any anomalies, as
you can view the log online. If you do not wish to have
JTFOX write to the caller log, just enter the file you wish
to have JTFOX write to.
■ Path of CNAMES File:
Unlike it's predecessors version 3.60 of JTFOX reads the
CNAMES file directly, thus removing the need to have extra
files on the drive. Enter only the path of your CNAMES
file.
■ Path to JTFOX Data Files:
JTFOX uses this path to store information, such as the
directory information for the files on the CD-ROM and other
little things like that. A directory under the root
directory of JTFOX should do fine.
■──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Page 4.3

───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
■ Path to JTFOX Header Files:
This is where JTFOX now stores all it's Headers. This
includes conference specific headers as well as the General
headers. Again, a subdirectory under the JTFOX directory
will do quite nicely.
■ Path & Name of JTFOX Bulletin.
This field must be defined if the option to create a
bulletin report is set to yes, otherwise it can be ignored.
The name as well as the path must be defined.

───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
■ Flags:
The flags screen is basically a YES/NO option screen. Most
of the flags are identical to the previous versions of JTFOX
but there is one modification, specifically to the ALLFILES
option.

└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
■ Create a Bulletin:
Using this option, JTFOX will create a bulletin, similar to
your DIR file, but will include the file statistics of all
the conferences. This allows your users to see all your
conference statistics easily and efficiently. In the event
where you have private conferences, you might want to turn
this option off.
■ Create a DIR(G) listing:
If this option is set to yes, JTFOX will go and alter your
DIR files (the text file seen by your users). JTFOX will
create only one file, with the appropriate codes in it.
WARNING:
IF YOU'RE NOT SURE WHICH FILE THIS DEALS WITH OR IF YOU'RE
NOT SURE THAT YOU WANT TO MODIFY IT, LEAVE THIS OPTION TO
`NO'.
■──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Page 4.4
JTFOX 3.60 SETUP-Board Flags
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
■ Insert General Title:
JTFOX has the capability of adding general or individual
titles on the DIRx files. Setting this option to yes, will
insert the file entitled `TITLE' on top of all the DIRx
files that it processes. This file can be a straight ASCII
file or can have PCB 14.5 colour codes, and no there is no
limit to it's length. However, if you make it longer than
24 lines, you are bound to bore your users.
■ Individual Titles:
Individual titles can be added to DIRx files regardless of
the above setting. The naming convention for these files is
a numerical code which works like this.
X.X
│ │
│ └── Number of directory we want the title for.
└─── Conference that directory is located in.
These files, like the TITLE files are straight ASCII files
with the inclusion of PCB 14.5 colour codes. Any line
editor will do. No option has to be set for this option to
work. JTFOX uses this function on a IIF (Insert If Found)
basis.
Since PCBoard can have up to 999 directories per conference,
an alternate method is used to indicate titles that are to
be placed in the Upload and Private Upload listing. The
file is indicated as follows.
X.UPL <-- For the upload directory
│
X.PRI <-- For the Private upload directory
│
└──── Conference that directory is located in.
■ Process Uploads:
If for some reason you don't want your Uploads modified by
JTFOX, set this option of `N'.
■ Process Private Uploads:
This is one of those requested items, which some people
need, and others well, could care less. If you don't want
to have your Private Uploads modified, set this option to
`N'.
■──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Page 4.4
JTFOX 3.60 SETUP-Board Flags
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
■ Process Modified Only :
Due to an improved method of scanning and creating a header,
this option has been disabled.
■ Create ALLFILES.TXT :
If set to yes, JTFOX will create a list of all available
files on your BBS.
■ Daily or Weekly building of ALLFILES.TXT
If you turn on the Allfiles option, another window will open
asking you if you wish to build the ALLFILES.TXT on a daily
or weekly basis. Here's the difference:
Daily: This will build a new ALLFILES.TXT everytime that JTFOX
is run. This, in ideal conditions, would mean that an
ALLFILES.TXT file would be created every night.
Weekly: This option will allow you to pick the day of the week
where JTFOX will build a ALLFILES.TXT file. This then
limits the building of such a file to once a week.
■ Keep Backup Files:
If you're not pressed for space, or wish to test JTFOX out,
without committing yourself, leave this option to yes. It
will keep a backup copy of your last DIRx files with the
extension *.BAK. If you're pressed for space or are sure
this program is for you (or just hate *.bak files) set this
option to no.

In this screen you will select the colours that will be displayed
at the top of each DIRx file header. Everything is configurable,
from the name of the BBS all the way to the files online and
offline.
Use the Up-Down arrow keys to move through each field. The field
you are currently viewing will be highlighted for easier viewing.
When you wish to edit something press <ENTER>. The first value
to change is the foreground colour. Values range from 1 to 15
(the colours are at the bottom for quick viewing) and background
colours range from 1-7 (also at the bottom). When editing a
colour you may go between the two fields (background and
foreground colours) using the up-down arrow keys. Pressing ESC
will exit edit mode, and will indicate your new colour settings.
Pressing ESC while out of edit mode will take you to the main
menu screen.
NOTE:
It is unadvisable to start playing with the colours while
you are running SETUP in monochrome mode as you will have no
idea what the end result will be!

■──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Page 4.8
JTFOX 3.60 JTSETUP-Conference Choices
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
■ Conference Selections:
This is a pretty straight-forward operation. Pressing the
up and down arrow keys, takes you through a list of twenty
conferences, starting at 1 (Main Board). Pressing <ENTER>
will select or deselect a conference (depending on it's
current status). To get to another screen of conferences
(providing you have more than 20) press PgUp or PgDn. Their
effects should be self-explanatory. Keep in mind that this
is the only part of SETUP that is unaffected by the QUIT AND
ABORT function. Selections are saved instantly.
NEW FEATURE:
If you select a conference by getting a @ sign next to it,
the files in that conference, will be processed but no
ALLFILES listing will be created. This is useful for CD-ROM
Drives which have a static amount of files.
Features found in ALLFILES:
ALLFILES.TXT is a straight ASCII file, which includes an
index (placed at the beginning of the text file) as well as
two user defined text files. In the event that a private
file is created (as indicated by the user in the conference
selection) this file has the form XXXXXX.TXT where XXXXX is
the name of the conference as found in PCBoard's CNAMES
file. All these files when processed by JTFOX are formatted
for easy printing.
NOTE:
If your conferences have spaces in them, JTFOX will take all
the letters (up to a maximum of eight) found before the
spaces, and use them to build a filename.
NOTE:
If printing on a laser printer, the printer must be able to
emulate all fonts above ASCII 127!
Also, all text files must be located in the HEADER
directory.
The naming conventions are as follows:
ALLFILES.TXT <--General listing of files
ALLFILES.JTF <--Opening ASCII screen (if desired)
ALLFILES.END <--Closing ASCII screen (if desired)
XXXXXXXX.TXT <--Private listing of files
XXXXXXX.JTF <--Opening ASCII screen (if desired)
XXXXXXX.END <--Closing ASCII screen (if desired)
HINT:
Although JTFOX will weed out duplicate DIRx files, you can
speed it up even more, by not having it scan conferences
which are duplicates of the main board.

■ JTFOX
Before attempting to run JTFOX 3.60 you must
make sure of the following things.
■ You have selected at least one conference for scanning.
(Failure to do so, will cause JTFOX to abort.)
■ Make sure that you have at least FILES=30 in your
CONFIG.SYS file. JTFOX may have up to 14 files open at the
same time, so you need that statement.
■ Make sure you have at least 100k of free ram.
NOTE:
If you are running under a multi-node environment, there is
no need to take down all the nodes. JTFOX will not be
hampered, or hamper the operation of other nodes. Also,
JTFOX will check if share is active, and if it is will open
the files in a way so as to not hamper other nodes which may
be online.

that you would make to your EVENT.SYS file.
EVENT.SYS
........... <-- Previous commands.
CD C:\PCB\JTFOX30 <-- Change into the JTFOX 3.60 directory
JTFOX360 <-- Call JTFOX 3.60
PKZIP F:\UPLOAD\ALLFILES.ZIP ALLFILES.TXT
^-- This statement should be used only if you want the
ALLFILES.TXT file zipped for your users viewing.
Remember to add a description of the file in your upload
listing.
CD \PCB
BOARD
That's it. That's the whole modification bit. Now if you
want to run JTFOX 3.60 manually, put yourself in the JTFOX
3.60 directory and type:
JTFOX360 <-- Use JTFOX.CNF
JTFOX360 1 <-- Use JTFOX1.CNF
NOTE:
Since the DIRx headers are kept separately from the DIRx
file, PCBFiler cannot chop them around, and they will
therefore always look perfect. The need to run JTFOX after
PCBFiler has been eliminated.

■ Registered users
If you are a registered user, and have problems with the
operation of JTFOX 3.60 there are several ways that you can
contact me.
1) The easiest way is to leave a message on AAXIS. I am
bound to pick it up in a maximum time period of 24 hours.
You might also want to leave me a copy of your CNAMES file,
if you think that the problem is in that.
2) You may leave a message in the Administration conference
of the following Echo-Mail systems.
■ Ilink (IL-Sysops)
■ Nanet (N-Sysops)
■ Fidonet (PCBNet)
■ NetMail (1:167/208)
■ MTLNet (17:514/110)
■ FrancoMedia (101:162/0) (101:167/100) (101:167/101)
A message left to me in any of these echos should get to
AAXIS within 2-3 days. Netmail is considerably faster.
3) If you really can't wait, you can call me at my voice
number (514) 274-1856.
■ Unregistered Users
If you haven't registered JTFOX 3.60 you may repeat all of
the above steps EXCEPT no. 3. Even if you just want to ask
little questions like how to register, etc. I urge you to
use methods 1 and 2.
