-> When I originally installed the 5/7/93 release and configured the system
-> to prompt to read mail it didn't work. I logged onto the system (from
-> remote) and never saw the prompt, even though a scan showed I had mail
-> waiting. I dropped to DOS to do some work and when I returned to the BBS I
-> was them prompted. It seemed to work fine for a while after that.
Jim, this is NOTHING NEW to v15.0.
Only messages that are posted on your system by PCBoard (and strictly
compatible messaging software) will set the MAIL WAITING FLAGS that are used to
cause the "pop-up" message that informs you of mail waiting.
Prove it to yourself. I gave the other fellow instructions. You can follow
the same instructions and see it IN ACTION in front of your very eyes:
DT>1) Log into your system.
DT>2) Write a message ONLINE (via PCBoard) to a user of your system.
DT>3) Save the message.
DT>4) Logoff
DT>5) Log on as the user you just wrote the message to
Because the message was written using PCBOARD - the "mail waiting flags" *will*
be set and the pop-up "You have mail waiting" message *will* be displayed.
So how do we explain what YOU saw compared to what I just described?
Okay, back to the very top of this message... any message posted by PCBoard
AND strictly compatible messaging software.
Unfortunately, VERY FEW mail doors, as yet, will set the mail waiting flags
when they post a message.
If you use PCBoard's QWK U command, PCBoard *will* set the mail waiting flags
for every user that receives a message. But if you use a mail door, such as
QMAIL4, the mail waiting flag will NOT be set and, JUST LIKE YOU SAW, you will
*not* be notified, via the pop-up "You have mail waiting" notification, that
you have new mail.
However, regardless of whether the message was posted by PCBoard or by QMAIL or
any other software, a MESSAGE SCAN will truly reveal whether or not new
messages exist.
From what I have seen in the Developer's Conference ... new mail doors, new
versions, are COMING. Ones that will also set the mail waiting flags, just
like PCBoard, and then, finally, your pop-up "You have mail waiting" problems
will be over.
Until that time....... we're stuck with the problem. It's been this way since
1989 when v14.5 came out. Hopefully 1993 will be a victorious year against
this battle.
