Welcome to NeMenu, the no-nonsense command menu for the DEC
PATHWORKS Network. NeMenu is intended as an alternative to the
'USE' or 'NET USE' command and is intended for the new network user
as well as the advanced user.
NeMenu aids in connecting and disconnecting file and printer
services, shows you what services are currently connected to the
workstation, controls print jobs you submit to network printer
queues as well as giving access to the NET HELP, NETSETUP and
SETHOST commands. All commands include mouse support (with the
exception of instances where the user is required to enter names of
services during the initial setup period), so that once the NeMenu
is setup, you need not even touch the keyboard to manage your
workstation connections.
NeMenu started out back in 1989 as a batch file menu, derived from a
general DOS batch file menu for invoking DOS applications. I had
determined that the batch file menu was too passive, especially
since it originated on a 'community' PC with many users, in which
the menu sat on the screen for extended periods of time. I had also
decided that it would be nice to have mouse support since graphical
applications were starting to come into the limelight.
I started out by rewriting the old DOS batch file menu, adding mouse
support, and a screen blanker, and decided to issue it as shareware,
under the name of DaMenu (pronounced da' menu with a short 'a', an
acronym for _D_OS _A_pplication _MEN_uing _U_tility; DaMenu can be
found on Compuserve in the IBMSYS forum, or call (607) 533-7072 to
get an evaluation copy for the price of the phone call!), my first
shareware release in March 1992.
At about the time I released DaMenu, my day job was in the process
of switching to the PATHWORKS network, which I was involved in
setting up on our site. I was amazed to see how many people were
using the old batch file menu for issuing network commands, and
decided that it was time to convert the old batch menu to the new
NeMenu (you guessed it, another acronym, pronounced ne' menu, again
with a short 'e'. This time it stands for _N_etwork _E_nvironment
_MEN_uning _U_tility) and again release it as shareware.
Hopefully you will find that NeMenu is a useful program and find
that it increases your productivity. If you continue to use it, you
are encouraged to register it by printing out the registration form
found in the file NEREGIST.TXT and sending it and the registration
fee to Just-In-Time Computing Services. As an aside, both NeMenu
and the aforementioned DaMenu (which works great in conjunction with
NeMenu!) are Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP) shareware.

└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Installation of NeMenu onto your system is designed to be as
painless as possible. The installation program NEINSTAL performs
the following functions:
- Checks to make sure that your computer system meets the
requirements mentioned in previous sections of this
manual. This step will be transparent to most users
unless your system does not meet these requirements, in
which case the installation will notify you.
- Will copy the NeMenu files from the current (or source)
drive and directory to a destination drive (and/or
directory) if you so desire.
- Will ask if you would like to modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file, so that the destination directory (the directory
where the NeMenu system files will permanently reside)
can be put into your path statement. This will allow you
to invoke NeMenu regardless of your current location on
your hard disk.
- Will create two files in the installation directory:
N.BAT, which is a batch file that is used to invoke NeMenu
from the DOS prompt and NEMENU.INI which holds all of the
network resource information.
Now, most users will get their copy of NeMenu in the form of an
archive file, which can be one of two kinds: A self extracting
archive file (i.e. NMENU1.EXE, which originates on CompuServe), or
a zipped file (i.e. NEMENU10.ZIP, which originates from all other
distribution methods) In any case, I'm assuming that if you're
reading this, you have successfully unarchived the NeMenu system
files. Now onto the installation.
┌───────────────────────────────────┐
│ Workstation Disk Installation │
└───────────────────────────────────┘
For most users, NeMenu will reside on a hard disk. This type of
installation can begin from either a floppy disk or from a directory
on your hard disk, with the final destination being your hard disk.
To start the installation enter the following command at the DOS prompt:
NEINSTAL <enter>
This will bring up a series of short introductory messages
describing some of the features of NeMenu. Once your are finished
reading the message screen, hit a key on the keyboard to move onto
the next screen. After the third message has been displayed and
read, it's time to move onto the actual installation.
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Installation (continued) 8 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
NEINSTAL has the ability to copy the NeMenu system files to a
final destination on your hard disk. When you reach this point in
NEINSTAL you will see a screen similar to the following:
╔═══════╡░▒▓█ Current Drive & Directory █▓▒░╞══════╗
║ ┌────┐ ║
║ Drive: │B: │ ║
║ ├────┴───────────────────────────┐ ║
║ Directory: │\ │ ║
║ └────────────────────────────────┘ ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════╡░▒▓█ Destination Drive & Directory █▓▒░╞═════╗
║ ┌────┐ ║
║ Drive: │B:_ │ ║
║ ├────┴───────────────────────────┐ ║
║ Directory: │\ │ ║
║ └────────────────────────────────┘ ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Note that both the current and destination drives and directories
are the same (the above case demonstrates the installation
originating from the B: floppy disk drive). You cannot modify the
current directory, since this is where NEINSTAL has been started
from. The cursor (_) resides beside the drive letter in the
destination drive and directory box.
To copy the files to a drive other than the current one, simply use
the backspace (<--) key to erase the destination drive letter, then
supply the letter of the drive you want to install to.
╔═ Installation Note ═══════════════════════════════════╗
║ ║
║ Hitting the 'Escape' (ESC) key will erase the current ║
║ entry for both the 'drive' specification and the ║
║ 'directory' specification, when the cursor resides on ║
║ the respective location. Hitting the 'Escape' key ║
║ twice (once more after the entry has been erased) ║
║ will ABORT the installation procedure. ║
║ ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Also you need not worry about the colon (:) after the drive letter,
it's optional (if you don't supply it, NeMenu still knows what you
mean). If more than two characters are supplied, NEINSTAL will
display an error message stating that the length of this field
cannot be more than two characters.
Once you are happy with the drive letter selection, hit the <ENTER>
key, which will toggle the cursor location down to the directory
specification. Again, as in the above step, use the backspace key
to erase the current directory location and supply one of your own.
If the directory you supply does not exist, NEINSTAL will ask if you
would like to create it.
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Installation (continued) 9 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Finally, the leading backslash (\) is optional; NEINSTAL assumes
that the directory you supply stems from the ROOT directory on that
drive. If you would like to install the NeMenu system to a second
level subdirectory of a current subdirectory, the entire path must
be supplied. In this case, the 'Parent' or first level subdirectory
MUST EXIST, if the second, or child directory does not exist
NEINSTAL will create it. NEINSTAL WILL NOT CREATE BOTH THE FIRST
AND SECOND LEVEL DIRECTORIES IF THEY BOTH DO NOT EXIST.
To copy the files from the B: drive to a the NeMenu (a directory
that doesn't exist yet) on your C: drive, the 'Destination Drive and
Directory' Box would look something like this:
╔═══════╡░▒▓█ Current Drive & Directory █▓▒░╞══════╗
║ ┌────┐ ║
║ Drive: │B: │ ║
║ ├────┴───────────────────────────┐ ║
║ Directory: │\ │ ║
║ └────────────────────────────────┘ ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════╡░▒▓█ Destination Drive & Directory █▓▒░╞═════╗
║ ┌────┐ ║
║ Drive: │C: │ ║
║ ├────┴───────────────────────────┐ ║
║ Directory: │\NEMENU_ │ ║
║ └────────────────────────────────┘ ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Also note that the trailing backslash in the destination directory
name is optional, but I suggest that you leave it off since this is
the convention that most installation programs use.
Once you're happy with the directory name, hitting <enter> will take
you onto the next step in the installation process.
╔═ Installation Note ═══════════════════════════════════╗
║ ║
║ The easiest way to install NeMenu is to first create ║
║ a directory on your hard disk, and decompress the ║
║ archive file in that directory. Doing this will ║
║ allow you to accept the default destination drive ║
║ and directory entries for the installation, and will ║
║ also bypass the copying of files. ║
║ ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
If you specified a different destination drive and/or directory,
NEINSTAL will begin to copy the NeMenu system files to that
location. A dialog box showing the files which NEINSTAL is copying
will be displayed on the screen. Once all files have been copied,
it's time to decide if you would like NEINSTAL to modify your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Installation (continued) 10 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
NeMenu is best used when the directory which contains the NeMenu
system is on the PATH. NEINSTAL will modify your current
AUTOEXEC.BAT file to include the directory in which NeMenu is
stalled in your PATH statement. You will see something similar to
the following on your screen:
╔═════════════════════════╗
║ Modify AUTOEXEC.BAT ? ║
║ ║
║ <NO> <YES> ║
╚═════════════════════════╝
The <NO> entry will be blinking which means that you'd rather do
the modification yourself. Please note that the blinking entry is
your current selection.
If you decide to have NEINSTAL modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
NEINSTAL will:
- Check to make sure an AUTOEXEC.BAT file exists on the boot
drive. If the file doesn't exist, NEINSTAL will create
one for you.
- If the AUTOEXEC.BAT file exists, NEINSTAL will create a
backup of this file with the name of AUTOEXEC.BAK.
- NEINSTAL will add the installation directory to each
occurrence of the "PATH" Statement in your AUTOEXEC file.
If modifications were performed and you are planning to use NeMenu
right away, you should reboot your workstation at this time.
That's it! It's time to move onto NeMenu's operation.
┌─────────────────────────────┐
│ Network Disk Installation │
└─────────────────────────────┘
I suggest that, if at all possible, NeMenu be located on the local
workstation hard disk drive. Now I know that not all workstations
have a hard disk, but that's the way that NeMenu was designed to
work, and will speed up the operation of NeMenu and cause the least
amount of problems.
As a network administrator, you have the option of installing NeMenu
on a local hard disk, setting up the required printer services, as
well as any COMMON or GLOBAL file services that you would like your
users to have access to, then copying the following files so that
your users can get to them on the network drive:
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐

║ * NELOGO.EXE ║
║ NEMANUAL.DOC ║
║ NEREADME.1ST ║
║ * N.BAT ║
║ ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════╝
The files with an asterisk are the bare minimum required for NeMenu
to run, however, I suggest putting the document files where everyone
can get to them. Also, it is important that the network directory
be on the PATH, so that your network users can get to it.
The main reason why I suggest that NeMenu not be located on a
central network disk is that the file NEMENU.INI could then be
modified or deleted by a 'unruly' user, and 'personal' file
services or accounts could be potentially entered by any network
user.
On the other hand, you could place NeMenu on a write protected drive
(i.e. the PCSAVxx Drive), so that modifications to NEMENU.INI would
be prohibited, but then the user would not have the personal
accounts and services available to them. Hopefully by now you see
the advantages to using NeMenu at the workstation level.

Now that you have an idea of what to expect, let's move onto the
actual NeMenu commands.
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ F1 - Connect Printer Service 13 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
This command enables the network user to redirect the output from
the workstation's printer port to a printer located on the network.
Before a printer can be connected, you have to tell NeMenu a little
about the printer service, namely the printer queue name (if you
don't know the name of the printer queue, ask your system manager).
You will also supply a descriptive name for the printer service,
such as the type of printer and I suggest including the printers
location (i.e. HP LaserJet IIIp in Building 1).
To get started, press the F1 function key. The first time you do
this, NeMenu will display a message on the screen saying that there
are no printer services currently defined. That's OK, because we're
now going to define one. To clear the message from the screen,
simply hit any key. This will bring up
╔═══════════════════════╗
║ <Add New Printer> ║
╚═══════════════════════╝
Hitting the return (or ENTER) key will bring up the printer
definition page, which looks like the following:
╔═══════════════ ░▒▓█ Add Printer Service █▓▒░ ═══════════════╗
║ ║
║ ┌────────────────┐ ║
║ Print Queue │ │ ║
║ ├────────────────┴────────────────────────┐ ║
║ Description │ │ ║
║ └─────────────────────────────────────────┘ ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
At this point, all you need to do is enter the printer queue name.
With the 'Basic Redirector' this name can be up to twelve characters,
and for the 'Enhanced Redirector' is limited to eight characters.
Use only alpha-numeric characters in the name, and hit return when
complete (also make sure that the queue name is spelled correctly!).
Once the printer queue name has been entered, you need to enter a
description of the printer queue/service. I suggest using the
actual name of the printer (like 'HP' or 'Epson') the model
of the printer (like 'Series IIIp' or 'LQ 850') and the location of
the printer (such as 'in Engineering Area'). The description also
needs to be less than 43 characters.
Try to keep the beginning of the description string as 'descriptive'
as possible, since when viewing the print jobs (F6 on the main menu)
the printer queue description is truncated down in order to fit on
the screen. You'll see this later when we talk about this function.
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ F1 - Connect Printer Service (continued) 14 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Once you're satisfied with the description of the service, hit the
<ENTER> key to accept it.
Now, you need to specify the node/server that the printer queue is
associated with. Again, NeMenu will remind you that there aren't
any nodes/server defined in the NEMENU.INI file with a message
broadcast across the screen. As before, hit a key to remove the
message from the screen, and the following will appear on the
screen:
╔══════════════════════╗
║ <Add New Server> ║
╚══════════════════════╝
Since '<Add New Server>' is what you need to do, hit <ENTER>, which
will bring up the server name/description dialog box (shown below).
As before, type in the name of the Server or Node in which the
printer queue is associated with. If you are unsure of the node's
name, ask your network administrator.
╔══════════╡ Add Node/Server ╞═════════╗
║ ║
║ ┌───────────┐ ║
║ Server │ │ ║
║ ├───────────┴────────┐ ║
║ Description │ │ ║
║ └────────────────────┘ ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════╝
Once the name has been entered, hit <ENTER> at which point you need
to enter a descriptive name for the node. Again, I suggest using
the type of computer (like 'The VAX') and the location ('in
Administration'). What ever the name you give, you entry must be
less than 23 characters.
We're finally ready to actually connect the printer! Once you're
satisfied with the server's descriptive name, press <ENTER>. Now
you're have a menu on the screen with the descriptive name that you
supplied earlier, looking something like:
╔════════════════════════════════════╗
║ HP LJ IIIp in Engineering Area ║
║ <Add New Printer> ║
╚════════════════════════════════════╝
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ F1 - Connect Printer Service (continued) 15 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
You can continue to add printer services at this point (by selecting
<Add New Printer>) or make the connection to a local printer port. Use
the arrow keys to highlight your selection and press <ENTER> (or
move the mouse cursor to your selection, & use the left mouse button
to click on the selection). At this point, you have three printer
ports to choose from, again from a menu, which will look like:
╔════════════════════════════════════╗ ╔══════════╗
║ HP LJ IIIp in Engineering Area ╟───>║ LPT1 ║
║ <Add New Printer> ║ ║ LPT2 ║
╚════════════════════════════════════╝ ║ LPT3 ║
╚══════════╝
Simply use the mouse or arrow keys to select the port that you would
like to redirect over the network. NeMenu will make sure that the
port is not already connected (even if you don't have LPT2, and
LPT3, these ports can still be used over the network) then make the
connection for you.
From this point onward, NeMenu will remember this printer selection
and it will be available to connect to any of the three printer
ports you wish.
Currently NeMenu will allow only 10 predefined printer services,
which hopefully (depending on the need) will be increased in future
versions.
Once the printer port has been selected, NeMenu will display a
message in the message box indicating that it's trying to connect
the printer service to the port that you've specified.
Once the connection has been established, NeMenu will update the
"Current Network Resources" screen with the connection that you've
just made.
╔═ NeMenu Note ════════════════════════════════════╗

║ Hit any key to return to the main menu. ║
║ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ F2 - Disconnecting a Printer Service 16 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Function key F2 is used to disconnect a printer service that has
been redirected over the network. This allows the network user to
regain control of his/her local printer port, enabling the user to
print jobs at a printer connected to the local workstation, or to
connect a different printer service to that port.
To disconnect a printer service, select F2 at the main menu. This
will bring up the "Current Network Resources" screen which will show
all of the printer services connected to the workstation (it also
shows all disk/file services connect, but we'll deal with that in
short order).
One major difference will appear, however, in that the printer port
LPT1 will be highlighted (white on black) as will any printer
service currently connected to this port. This is essentially

To disconnect the printer service from the local port, simply use

│ F3 - Connecting a File Service 17 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
This command enables the network user to connect an VAX account (or
service which has been set up by the network administrator) to the
local workstation. This is essentially the same as adding a new
hard disk to your PC.
Before an account can be connected, you have to tell NeMenu a little
about the service, namely the account (or service) name (if you
don't know the name of the service, ask your system manager).
You will also supply a descriptive name for the account (or file
service as it is commonly referred to by PATHWORKS), such as the
account or file service name (i.e. LOTUS 123 Service).
To get started, press the F3 function key. The first time you do
this, NeMenu will display a message on the screen saying that there
are no disk/file services currently defined. That's OK, because we're
now going to define one. To clear the message from the screen,
simply hit any key. This will bring up

At this point, the 'Server Menu' will also appear. If you haven't
previously defined any servers, you will also need to define a
server for the file service that you are about to tell NeMenu about.
If you have defined previous servers, the Server Menu will have that
choice available for you to select. If not, <Enter> to '<Add New

correctly!).
Once the server name has been entered, hit <ENTER> at which point
you need to enter a descriptive name for the Server. Again, I
suggest using the type of computer (like 'The VAX') and the location
('in Administration'). What ever the name you give, you entry must
be less than 23 characters.
Once you're satisfied with the description of the server, hit the
<ENTER> key to accept it.
Now, back to the file service. You need to specify the service name
associated with this file service. In most cases, users will be
connecting up an account rather than a service. If you are unsure
if a service has been defined for you, either contact your network
administrator, or leave this entry blank. (Please note that the
words 'Server' and 'Service' are completely different. A 'Service'
is a special account set up by the network administrator to
facilitate users connecting to a "generic" account, along with their
USERNAME and PASSWORD. A 'Server' is a standalone computer, most
often a VAX, or node in a VAX Cluster.) At this point, you should
enter the service name, or press <ENTER> to proceed on to the
USERNAME field.
To connect up an VAX account as a file service, you will need a
USERNAME and PASSWORD from your system administrator. If you
already have an account, enter it now. Again, with the 'Basic
Redirector' the username can be up to twelve characters, and for
the 'Enhanced Redirector' is limited to eight characters. Use only
alpha-numeric characters in the name, and hit return when complete

NeMenu.
If you haven't previously defined any nodes/servers simply use the

since some programmable keyboards will lock up if this qualifier is
not used. If this presents a problem, please contact Just-In-Time
and we can do a workaround to suit your needs.
Since a batch file is used to initially invoke NeMenu, SETHOST has

Error Message Descriptions
"To Invoke NeMenu, Type 'N' at the DOS Prompt."
You have tried to invoke NeMenu by typing 'NEMENU' at the DOS
prompt. NeMenu uses a batch file called N.BAT to start the
NeMenu application, which allows other network programs
(SETHOST and NETSETUP) to be called from NeMenu without a
memory sacrifice.
"Disk is FULL!"
"Please make room on disk!"
NeMenu uses your hard disk as a temporary storage location
during its operation. Your hard disk appears to be
completely filled, or at least to the point where NeMenu
could not write its temporary files to disk. NeMenu requires
roughly 450k of disk space for the installation and
operation. Please make sure you have enough free disk space
available.
"NEMENU.INI contains invalid path"
"Delete NEMENU.INI & rerun NEINSTAL.EXE"
The NEMENU.INI file contains invalid information, which has
occurred unexpectedly. Your only course of action at this
point is to delete the NEMENU.INI file and rerun
NEINSTAL.EXE. NEINSTAL will create a new NEMENU.INI file for
you, but you will need to re-enter your network
specifications (i.e. file & printer services).
"An unexpected error as occurred. Contact JCS or try to remedy
yourself"
This error message can be followed by many different error
messages, all of which have occurred unexpectedly. You can
try to solve the problem yourself (if, for instance, it
pertains to your computer system, i.e. an "Out of Memory"
message would mean that you need to free up additional memory
for NeMenu to run properly) or you can contact Just-In-Time
Computing Services (see the product support section of this
manual) for help.

"An unexpected error has occurred. The last command returned the
error:"
This command is also followed by another error message line,
which has been generated by PATHWORKS. This error occurs
after trying to connect or disconnect a printer or file/disk
service. Some probable causes of this error are incorrect
passwords, or a typographical error while entering a network
service name. In any case, the second line of this error
message is usually descriptive enough to allow the user to
correct the problem without any assistance.
"NeMenu could not find the required network programs on your PATH
statement. The PATH statement must contain the entries \PCAPP and
\DECNET which are located on a network drive. PATHWORKS adds these
entries to your PATH statement when the network is started. This
means that:
(1) Either the network has not been started or ...
(2) The PATH statement has been truncated.
Please correct the PATH statement and try NeMenu again."
This error message occurs at the beginning of NeMenu, as it
checks initial operating conditions. NeMenu simply could not
find the required programs on your PATH due to an incorrect
PATH statement. Once the network has been started, check your
PATH statement to make sure the entries \PCAPP and \DECNET are
included. If they don't appear to be, your environment size
may need to be increased. See your DOS manual, under the
'SHELL' statement for instructions on increasing the memory
allocated for your environment variables.
"There are no disk/file services currently connected."
You are trying to disconnect a file or disk service (F4) when
there aren't any available to disconnect. This message should
occur very rarely since there always should be at least one
file service, the network service, connected at all times.
"There are printers currently connected."
You have selected "Disconnect Printer Service" (F2) when
none of the local printer ports have been redirected over the
network.

"There are printer ports available."
You are trying to connect a printer service (F1) however, all
printer ports (LPT1, LPT2, and LPT3) are all currently
connected to a network printer service. To make a port
available, use "Disconnect Printer Service" to make a local
printer port available. PATHWORKS only allows three printer
services to be connected at any given time.
"There is no printer connected to this port."
While trying to disconnect a printer service, you have
selected a port which currently isn't connected to a printer
service. Simply choose "Disconnect Printer Service" again
and select the correct printer port to disconnect.
"The disk/file service you are trying to disconnect is the network
disk. NeMenu will not allow you to disconnect it."
While using the menu selection "Disconnect File Service" (F4)
you've selected the file service \PCSAVxx which is connected
by PATHWORKS once the network is started. NeMenu depends on
programs located on this drive in order to operate correctly.
If you want to disconnect this service, the network should be
stopped using the STOPNET command provided by PATHWORKS.
"There are no Disk/File Services Defined in NEMENU.INI!"
This error message only occurs the first time you try to
connect a file service after the initial installation. This
is simply a notification that NEMENU.INI doesn't contain any
predefined file services. You will need to establish the
connections, by defining the appropriate nodes, services or
accounts that you will be using in the future. Hitting the
spacebar will allow you to start defining a file service.
"Are you sure you want to remove this entry from NEMENU.INI?"
This message appears during a connection of a printer and/or
file/disk service, or when selecting a node from the node
menu. While the selection menu is on the screen, you have hit
either the delete key or the right mouse button while on a
menu selection, which will delete or remove the selection from
the availability list. (The left mouse button or 'ENTER' key
should be used to make a selection) select "NO" if you do not
want to delete this entry, or "YES" to remove it from the
list. "ESCAPE" will return you to the main menu.

"ERROR! Entry exceeds maximum of XX characters"
This error message occurs while entering text into a field,
which can appear at numerous places within NeMenu. The XX
denotes the maximum amount of characters that nemenu will allow
for this entry. "CANCEL" will send you back to the main menu,
while "OK" will allow you to re-enter your description.
"NEMENU.INI is not in the correct format. Please remove all blank
lines, or delete the file and re-enter your network connections."
This message occurs when NeMenu is trying to read the
initialization file NEMENU.INI, and has found the file to be
in an incorrect format. The correct format is as follows:
[Nodes]
node1 description
....
[File Services]
\servicename password nodenumber
....
[Printer Services]
\queuename {service & password} nodenumber
....
[End]
This file should not contain any blank lines, nor should it be
edited, in general, by the user. It is imperative that the
bracketed header entries be in the correct order and present.
If you've found that NEMENU.INI is not in the correct format,
simply delete the file, and rerun NEINSTAL, which will
recreate NEMENU.INI for you. You will have to re-enter your
network corrections, unless a backup of NEMENU.INI has been
made.
"NEMENU.INI file not found! Please run NEINSTAL first. Also make
sure NEMENU.EXE resides in a directory on the PATH!"
This error message is a result of trying to invoke NeMenu from
a directory that is not on the PATH statement, or ... the
NEMENU.INI file has been accidentally deleted from the NeMenu
installation directory. Check to make sure NEMENU.INI file
exists in the installation directory, and that the file
'N.BAT' points to that directory.

│ Trouble Shooting (continued) 33 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
"An error has occurred while attempting to spawn: xxxxxxxx"
The error can occur when using SETHOST or NETSETUP. NeMenu
spawns these applications so that they have access to all of
the memory that they require. The above line will be followed
by a run-time error message from DOS, which is more specific
to the problem at hand. Try to remedy the error or contact
Just-In-Time Computing Services for additional support.
"NEMENU.INI doesn't contain any previously defined Nodes"
This is an informational message which occurs during the initial
setup period of NeMenu, simply stating that there haven't been
any Nodes/Servers previously defined. Once at least one
Node/Server is defined, this message will not appear, but a
menu of available nodes will. Press any key to remove the
message from the screen, at which point you will be able to
start defining a new node/server for NeMenu to use in the
future.
"NEMENU.INI doesn't contain any previously defined printers!"
This is an informational message which occurs during the initial
setup period of NeMenu, simply stating that there are no printer
services previously defined by the user. Once at least one
printer service has been defined, this message will cease, and a
menu of printer services will take it's place. Hit any key to
begin defining a printer service.
"If you are using the 'Basic Redirector' you new have the option to
attach an account name to the selected printer service. Doing so
will enable you to delete your print jobs in case of an error. You
will have no control over your print jobs if the <NO> option is
selected. (With 'Enhanced Redirector' Select <NO>) Would you like to
add, an account name to the service?"
This message occurs when setting up a new printer service
through NeMenu. Rather than an error message, it is more of an
option you have which will give you some control over print
jobs. If you are using the 'Basic Redirector' it is highly
suggested that you select '<YES>'. (If you're not sure what
redirector you are using, select '<YES>' anyway. PATHWORKS will
notify you that this option is not available with the 'Enhanced
Redirector.' If this is the case, you can delete the printer
service from the selection list, and re-specify the printer
service without this option.) This way, if you send, for
instance, a print job designed to be printed at a laser queue,
and you have a dot matrix printer currently connected, you can
delete the print job by selecting F6, "Show Network Print
Jobs" and then select "DELETE" before the print job finishes.
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Trouble Shooting (continued) 34 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
If you're using the 'Enhanced Redirector' the option to delete a
job is built-in as is the ability to "Pause" and "Release" jobs
for better queue management.
"NeMenu has detected the use of the 'Full LanMan 2.0 Support
Redirector.' Current version of NeMenu only supports BASIC and
ENHANCED redirectors."
This error message occurs when trying to connect or disconnect
a file or print service while using the 'Full LanMan 2.0
support' redirector. NeMenu was designed to offer a better
user interface for BASIC & ENHANCED redirector users,
something which is readily available with the 'Full LanMan
Support' redirector (See your PATHWORKS Documentation for more
Information.) Therefore, if you are using the LanMan
Redirector, and would like to use NeMenu, invoice the NETSETUP
option (F7) of NeMenu and change to the BASIC Redirector as an
added bonus this will also free up a significant amount of DOS
memory, which may aid in running some applictions. (See your
Network administrator or PATHWORKS documentation for more help
on changing your redirector.)
"You have more disk/file services connected than NeMenu can
currently display. Only the first 7 services are displayed"
This message is intended to notify the user that NeMenu is
truncating the file service listing to the first
(alphabetically) seven services that have been connected.
Currently, NeMenu is limited to 7 services, but will be
changed to a scrolling window in the next version, which will
support a possible 24 file connection choices. It is
recommended that all file services which are not currently
being used by disconnected.
"NeMenu has detected a Fatal Network Error. Disconnect the blinking
connection, then attempt to reconnect."
During a listing of the "Current Network Resources" (or F5, "Show
Connected Services") the network is reporting a problem with
one or more of the connections currently established. This
may be due to the server going off-line (or possibly down, if
no other services are available.) Try to disconnect the
blinking services with F2 & F4 in the main menu.
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Trouble Shooting (continued) 35 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
"The network does not appear to be started. Please start network."
This error should occur very rarely. If the network had been
started successfully, and NeMenu has checked for network existence
(in other words, if the main menu appears, the network has been
checked & passed by NeMenu.) Then this message will only
appear if all connections to the network have been lost. This
is, if no connections are currently available, (you've
disconnected them outside of NeMenu) NeMenu will think that
since the network drive doesn't exist, the network has not
been started.
Other Error Situations
"When trying to connect or disconnect printer & file services, or
showing connected services, my computer locks up."
Under heavy network traffic, NeMenu will appear to lock-up your
computer. In reality, due to traffic, NeMenu is simply waiting
for a response to a network command, which sometimes can take
up to a minute to complete. If you've waited longer than this,
try to break out of the command by pressing the control (CNTL)
& the letter 'C' or control 7 the "Break" key to return control
to NeMenu. If your keyboard beeps while trying to execute this
command, your computer must be rebooted (control-alt-delete
keys pressed simultaneously).
"When running NeMenu from a DOS box from within Windows, My mouse
doesn't work."
NeMenu has been tested from within Windows with various
results. To run NeMenu successfully from within Windows:
- Run NeMenu is 'Full Screen' Mode, you will have full
mouse support in this mode. Running NeMenu in a window
will yield unpredictable results for the mouse
depending on the mouse driver you are using.
- Use the regular version of Windows (v3.1 or Higher)
rather than Windows for Workgroups (WFW). WFW and
PATHWORKS don't seem to get along too well as of yet,
yielding various error conditions.

│ Screen Blanking 36 │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
There are three different ways to blank the screen:
(1) By allowing the timer (found in the lower right corner
of the banner) to count down to zero;
(2) By hitting the "tilde" [~] key, usually found to the left
of the number '1' key on enhanced keyboards (note that you
need not press the shift key together with this key, just
the "tilde" key alone).
(3) If you have a mouse, you can force the screen to blank by
moving the mouse cursor to the upper left corner of the
screen.
In any case, hitting a key on the keyboard (except ALT, SHIFT, or
CTRL) will bring the menu screen back.
For the case where the mouse is moved to the upper right hand
corner, if a key is pressed to return the menu, the screen may blank
again ofter a split second. Simply move the mouse from the upper
right hand corner and the screen will stay.
The screen blanker delay time is set at 150 seconds, and currently
cannot be modified. Let me know if this is a problem, I can change
this in future versions.
** NOTE ** The screen blanking feature is only available through
the main menu, and can not be invoked in any other part of the program.
