  29. WHAT The LANdon Bridge IS
  30. =========================
  31.  
  32. The LANdon Bridge is a software bridge/repeater/router for Artisoft(TM)
  33. LANtastic(R) networks.  It allows users to mix and match supported hardware
  34. types on their LANtastic(R) network, and allows all network nodes to log
  35. into all servers and send messges to all nodes, regardless of what kind of
  36. hardware they are using.

  38. Users of the LANtsatic(R) 2Mbps adapters or the LANtastic(R)/Z network can
  39. connect to each other or to a 10Mbps network segment, such as Thinnet or
  40. twisted pair, and not be subject to the usual hardware restrictions of
  41. such an arrangement.  See MANUAL.TXT or print MANUAL.PS on a PostScript(R)
  42. laser printer for more details.

  50. TIME-RESTRICTED VERSION
  51. =======================
  52.  
  53. This version of The LANdon Bridge is intended as a shareware demonstration
  54. program.  It is a fully functional copy of the registered version of The
  55. LANdon Bridge, with one exception.
  56.  
  57. After approximately 1/2 hour of operation, it will execute the SHUTDOWN command
  58. internally.  The SHUTDOWN command is documented in the manual.  After the
  59. initial 1/2 hour of operation, the RESTART command will not succeed.
  60. The FLUSH and REMOVE commands will still work, however, so you can cleanly
  61. remove the demonstration program from memory, even after the 1/2 hour
  62. demonstration period has expired.

  64. Note that there will be no warning before the SHUTDOWN command is executed
  65. internally.  Workstations may have to be rebooted, and data may be lost if
  66. they are actively accessing servers via the bridge when a SHUTDOWN occurs,
  67. depending on the particular application program's response to the loss of
  68. connection with the server.

  72. FIRST SHAREWARE VERSION
  73. =======================

  75. ***NOTE***  THIS IS AN EXTREMELY EARLY BETA VERSION OF THIS PROGRAM  ***NOTE***

  77. Having invested much time, money, and energy into this program, and finding
  78. our testing facilities to be less than what we would like, we at Limerick
  79. Software have decided to release the first Shareware version of The LANdon
  80. Bridge as a beta.  Users should monitor their source for this Shareware copy
  81. or, better yet, register their copy, to stay on top of future bug fixes and
  82. further enhancements.  See "Special Offer for New Users" and "Coming Soon"
  83. below.

  85. At the current time, known problems include the following:
  86.  
  87.     *    It is IMPERATIVE that the REDIR SIZE switch settings be
  88.         equal throughout the network, and that the same setting
  89.         be used for the BRIDGE BUFFER_SIZE switch.
  90.  
  91.     *    The automatic SHUTDOWN sometimes results in a system
  92.         lockup on the bridge machine.  Try to get out and
  93.         REMOVE The LANdon Bridge within the 30 minute time
  94.         allotted for demonstrating the program.
  95.  
  96.     *    Sometimes, passing server ids seems to be causing
  97.         miscellaneous undefined problems.  If you experience
  98.         unexplained lockups, try using USE_SERVER_IDS=NO,
  99.         together with later invocations of BRIDGE.EXE with
  100.         the ADD_SERVER_NAME switch.  Use ADD_SERVER_NAME to
  101.         explicitly list servers you want bridged.

  110. Please be as detailed and as patient as possible.  Users of the demonstration
  111. program, who are not registered users ARE WELCOME to submit bug reports.  We
  112. will try to respond to all bug reports, but cannot guarantee a response will
  113. be made in every instance.

  117. WHAT REGISTERED USERS GET

  120. Registered users will receive the most current version of The LANdon Bridge,
  121. along with a nicely typeset soft-cover manual, and one license, allowing
  122. the use of The LANdon Bridge on any single computer at any one time.

  129. Due to the extreme earliness of this first release, users who register on or
  130. before May 31, 1993, will also receive, at no additional cost, automatic
  131. free upgrades for a period of six months, beginning June 1, 1993, and ending
  132. November 30, 1993.  Your support of this program will enable us to serve you
  133. better.

  140. You can become a registered user of The LANdon Bridge one of two ways.

  142. You can send a check or money order for $50.00, along with your name and
  143. address for delivery, and a request for The LANdon Bridge to:

  155. Shareware Registration Database.  Just GO SWREG, then follow the prompts

  157. Database on CompuServe(R), GO SWREG and choose the "Information on How To
  158. Register Shareware" option.

  165. COMING SOON
  166. ===========

  168. By the next release of The LANdon Bridge, we anticipate having added the
  169. following features:
  170.  
  171.     *    A command line switch such as SHOW or INFO, which
  172.         will list servers in the internal server name table,
  173.         logins to various servers via the bridge, the number
  174.         of available server names, and logins, etc.
  175.  
  176.     *    A command line switch such as RPL=YES/NO, or RPL_SERVER=xxxxx,
  177.         to allow RPL logins across the bridge.  At the current time,
  178.         servers configured as RPL boot image servers cannot
  179.         be accessed by the boot ROM via The LANdon Bridge.
  180.  
  181.     *    A command line switch such as REMOVE_SERVER_NAME, to
  182.         allow the deletion of individual server names from the
  183.         internal server name list, rather than forcing users
  184.         to FLUSH the bridge, as is currently the case.
  185.  
  186.     *    Possible command line switches to restrict logins to
  187.         an explicit list of machine names, machines other
  188.         than those cannot login via the bridge.  This would
  189.         add a layer to the already considerable security built
  190.         into LANtastic(R).
  191.  
  192.     *    Possible support for NET CHAT, The Network Eye, and
  193.         other NetBIOS session-based application software.

  197. ERRATA
  198. ======

  200. The page numbers given in the Table of Contents in MANUAL.TXT are inaccurate.
  201. The Table of Contents has been left in as a general guide to the manual, for
  202. those who have no access to a PostScript(R) printer, and cannot print
  203. MANUAL.PS.
  204.  
  205. The hook preventing Microsoft(TM) Windows(TM), Version 3.1, from starting
  206. in Enhanced mode has been removed.  To the best of our knowledge, Windows(TM)
  207. MAY be run in Enhanced mode on a machine running The LANdon Bridge.
