  6.    Welcome to our shareware effort, Mail Manager +Plus+!  This program 
  7.    represents our continuing effort to add some of the new features to the
  8.    door that everyone has been asking for.
  9.  
  10.    Old friends will notice that this program is now released under the banner
  11.    of Makai Software instead of Newark Connections.  See the WHATSNEW.350 for
  12.    further information on this.

  14.    This file includes instructions for upgrading your existing Mail Manager
  15.    or Mail Manager +Plus+ installation to version 3.51.
  16.  
  17.    But first, a quick overview of what all is included in the package:

  19.    WHATSNEW.351 - Differences since the previous release (v3.50).  If you
  20.                   have already installed v3.50, PLEASE READ THIS FILE FIRST!

  22.    WHATSNEW.350 - Differences since the release of v3.11.

  24.    HISTORY.DOC  - Everything that has changed since the release of the v1.3x 
  25.                   series of the door.

  27.    MAILMGR.DOC  - Instructions for setting up/using the door to its full
  28.                   capabilities.

  30.    NETINFO.DOC  - How to use the QWK networking features of the door.
  31.                   (Definitely a separate subject in and of itself).

  112.                   the default options for your new users, you can modify
  113.                   this file accordingly.  If you're happy with our defaults,
  114.                   you can delete this file.

  116.    RBBSQWK.BAT  - Batch file called when list of archivers is not used.

  118.    MAILMGR.TXT  - Sample text configuration file, created by the
  119.                   CFG2TXT.EXE utility.  This file can be directly
  120.                   compiled to Mail Manager's binary format with
  121.                   TXT2CFG.EXE.

  123.    SAMPLE.CFG   - Sample MNET configuration file for the NODE end of
  124.                   a QWK network.

  127.    UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION:
  128.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  130.    Mail Manager has been updated frequently.  How long ago you picked up
  131.    your copy of Mail Manager will dictate just how much things have
  132.    changed since you last looked at the package.  If you are upgrading
  133.    from a version prior to 1.30, your best bet is to install Mail Manager
  134.    +Plus+ from scratch, as the current door bears little resemblance to
  135.    your current setup.
  136.  
  137.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  138.    COMMON TO ALL UPGRADES:
  139.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  140.  
  141.    Version 3.50 is a significant update to the Mail Manager +Plus+ version 3
  142.    series.
  143.  
  144.    Version 3.51 is a maint. release to v3.50.  If you are upgrading from
  145.    v3.50, you need only replace MAILMGR.EXE (contained in 351-EXE.ZIP).
  146.    Nothing else has changed since the release of v3.50.  See WHATSNEW.351
  147.    for more info on this.
  148.  
  149.    If you are upgrading from a version lower than 1.30, your best bet is
  150.    to set up Mail Manager +Plus+ from scratch.  The changes are simply
  151.    too extensive.
  152.  
  153.    There are several things common to ALL upgrades from v1.30 through 3.11:
  154.  
  155.       [ ] - Back up your Mail Manager directory!  It never hurts to play it
  156.             safe.
  157.  
  158.       [ ] - Overwrite all executables with the ones contained within
  159.             351-EXE.ZIP.  (You backed up your old ones, right?)
  160.  
  161.       [ ] - The Mail Manager help files have been updated in v3.50.  Delete 
  162.             your old MAILMGR*.HLP files, and use the new ones contained
  163.             within 351-TXT.ZIP.  These help files have a new naming
  164.             convention: MMGR*.HLP instead of MAILMGR*.HLP.  Do not rename
  165.             them.
  166.  
  167.    If you are upgrading from a version prior to 3.11:
  168.  
  169.       [ ] - The main menu options have changed.  If you have created custom
  170.             menus, change them to reflect the updated options - de-compress
  171.             the files MAILMGR*.MNU from 351-TXT.ZIP, and have a look at what
  172.             they are.  If you are using the default menus, just overwrite
  173.             your existing ones with MAILMGR*.MNU in 351-TXT.ZIP.
  174.

  176.    That's it for the initial stuff.  Now, depending on which version you
  177.    were running:
  178.  
  179.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  180.    UPGRADING FROM "PLUS" v3.x:
  181.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  183.    Replace the following executables:
  184.  
  185.         CFG2TXT.EXE - Binary config -> text file utility, if you use it.
  186.         TXT2CFG.EXE - Text file -> binary config utility, if you use it.
  187.         MAILMGR.EXE - The main program itself.
  188.         MAILCFG.EXE - Updated configuration program.
  189.         MAILFIX.EXE - Latest version of MAILFIX (v4.30).  Not necessary,
  190.                       but you might like the new version better than the
  191.                       old (/P command line option added).
  192.           MUSER.EXE - The Mail Manager +Plus+ user file editor (new field,
  193.                       and new command line option added).
  194.            MNET.EXE - QWK<->REP conversion utility for the node end of a
  195.                       QWK network, If you use it.
  196.         MMINDEX.EXE - The indexing utility for Fido *.MSG areas.  New
  197.                       command line option "/L" added in v3.50 to process
  198.                       only the conferences listed in a pre-existing
  199.                       echotoss.log-type of file.  If you would use this
  200.                       capability, you'll need v3.50's MMINDEX.
  201.  
  202.    Have a look at the following NEW text file and modify/delete accordingly:
  203.  
  204.        NEW_USER.OPT - Optional list of default configuration options for new
  205.                       users.  If you would like to customize the default
  206.                       options for your new users, you can modify this file
  207.                       accordingly.  If this file does not exist in your
  208.                       Mail Manager +Plus+ directory, the door will use its
  209.                       own built-in default options for new users.
  210.  
  211.                       * NOTE * - THE FIRST CHARACTER OF EACH LINE is all that
  212.                       is significant in this file, and must be in upper case.
  213.                       The rest of the text on each line is used to describe
  214.                       what each option does, and is ignored by the door.
  215.  
  216.    That's it.  You don't even need to run MAILCFG against your existing
  217.    configuration file, unless you want to take advantage of the newest
  218.    MAILCFG options (* = NEW in v3.50):
  219.  
  220.       - Display empty/unjoinable conferences to user?
  221.  
  222.       - Ability to prevent splitting of long uploaded messages, by entering
  223.         "0" as number of lines allowed in any given conference.
  224.  
  225.       - Your Fido "Point" address, if applicable, for *.MSG netmail areas.
  226.  
  227.       - Your Fido "Fakenet" number, if you operate a "Fakenet" Fido point
  228.         system.
  229.  
  230.    *  - Max number of messages that any user can download in any one mail
  231.         packet (defaults to 1,000).
  232.  
  233.    *  - Force "violation notice" conference as active for all users?
  234.  
  235.    *  - Disallow online R)ead/P)ost options within the door?
  236.  
  237.    If you are using the MNET.EXE utility for your QWK network file conversion,
  238.    you will want to be sure that you are using the latest version (v2.00
  239.    included in this package).  Nothing else has changed since previous v3.x
  240.    releases except the distributed PRELOG*.RBS and EPILOG*.RBS text files,
  241.    which you probably aren't using anyway.
  242.  
  243.    The MMGRNODE executable has not changed (except version #) from earlier
  244.    v3.x releases.
  245.

  247.    UPGRADING FROM "PLUS" v2.0x:
  248.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  250.    After you install the new files as outlined above, all you really need to
  251.    do is run the new MAILCFG against your existing configuration file, and
  252.    save your changes when finished.  There are 2 new options on the second
  253.    screen of the main configuration...:
  254.    
  255.       - Allow G)oodbye and E)xpedite! options to drop DTR?  (Default = No)
  256.  
  257.       - Display empty/unjoinable conferences to user?
  258.  
  259.    ...3 new options on a *NEW* third screen of the main configuration...:
  260.  
  261.       - Max number of messages that any user can download in any one mail
  262.         packet (defaults to 1,000).
  263.  
  264.       - Force "violation notice" conference as active for all users?
  265.  
  266.       - Disallow online R)ead/P)ost options within the door?
  267.  
  268.    ...and four new options in each conference:
  269.  
  270.       - Number of lines allowed in each message (Default = 99).  Set to
  271.         zero (0) to not split long uploaded messages into smaller parts.

  273.       - Conference description (no default)
  274.  
  275.       - Your Fido "Point" address, if applicable, for *.MSG netmail areas.
  276.  
  277.       - Your Fido "Fakenet" number, if you operate a "Fakenet" Fido point
  278.         system.

  280.    Now you can dig out the "other" documentation <g> and see what else you
  281.    can do with this package.

  284.    UPGRADING FROM MAIL MANAGER v1.3x:
  285.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  286.  
  287.    Although it is relatively painless to upgrade from v1.3x of Mail Manager,
  288.    please be aware that both the configuration file and user file (MAILMGR.CFG
  289.    and MAILMGR.USR) have changed in format, and the new MAILCFG program will
  290.    report that your old configuration file is corrupt.
  291.  
  292.    Run the supplied UPDATE.EXE against your existing configuration file, then
  293.    run the supplied UPDATUSR.EXE against your existing MAILMGR.USR file.  MAKE 
  294.    SURE YOU RUN THESE UTILITIES FROM YOUR MAIL MANAGER DIRECTORY!  After 
  295.    you've run these utilities once, you can throw them away (UPDATE.EXE and 
  296.    UPDATUSR.EXE).
  297.

  302.    After that, run the new MAILCFG.EXE and carefully look for changes,
  303.    especially in the conference edit screen.  You'll have to go into the
  304.    new manual if some of the options appear confusing.

  307.    IF YOU'RE SETTING UP FOR THE FIRST TIME:
  308.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  310.    There is no such thing as a "QUICK INSTALL" for Mail Manager +Plus+,
  311.    although you can be up and running fairly easily by:
  312.  
  313.        - Creating a \MAILMGR directory off of your root,
  314.        - De-compressing the archives 351-EXE.ZIP and 351-TXT.ZIP there,
  315.        - Run MAILCFG.EXE, and follow the prompts, then...
  316.        - Follow standard procedure for adding a new door to your system
  317.          (DOORS.DEF, MENU5*, etc. etc.)
  318.  
  319.    However, we do *NOT* recommend that you do it this way if you have
  320.    more than a handful of conferences, and plan to add or delete any
  321.    in the forseeable future.  A little advance planning *NOW* can save
  322.    you a world of grief later, and there are many customizable text
  323.    files that you may want to change.
  324.  
  325.    Full installation instructions are found in the MAILMGR.DOC file.
  326.    Mail Manager +Plus+ is a VERY involved door, with many capabilities,
  327.    and encompasses just about your entire RBBS-PC (and frontend mailer)
  328.    setup.  There is no substitute for having a printed copy of MAILMGR.DOC
  329.    handy.
