Introduction
KingQWK is registered via a keyfile available on IDC BBS within 10
days after receipt of a personal or company check or 24 hours after
receipt of a cashier's check or money order. You may reach IDC BBS
at 415-865-7115. Complete registration instructions and a mail-in
order form are in the file REGISTER.FRM.
The following is formatted for use in file directory listings when
uploading KingQWK to a BBS:
KingQWK - The first non-beta release of
this new FAST, small QWK reader. It has
MANY features not found in other readers
including a unique interface to QWKMerge
allowing it to control precisely which
messages are merged into the ensuing QWK
packet. Shareware by Mike King

Getting Started
______________________________________________________________________________
Overview of KingQWK
KingQWK is an offline reader, designed for unpacking, reading, and
processing packets of messages - primarily from BBS's, in QWK
format. It provides various sorting and edit/interfacing functions.
Extensive on-line help is available in both KingCfg and KingQWK. To
obtain help at any time, press [F1]. To leave help, press [Esc].
You may also customize the KingQWK colors. The information about
paths and colors is stored in a new file, KINGQWK.CTL, which is
created by KingCfg and placed into the current directory.
KingQWK is small and compact freeing up valuable memory for
TSR's, sorting conferences with large numbers of messages and
floppy based systems.
KingQWK is exceptionally fast!
Designed primarily but not exclusively to work in concert with
QWKMerge to make a complete QWK Mail Manangement system.
ANSI support is available with the touch of a key with a
continuous flow display so annoying "MORE?" prompts don't disrupt
the ANSI graphics. The speed of this scolling is configurable.
Additionally the editor, text viewer, and ANSI viewer can all be
configured to external programs. KingQWK uses *YOUR* ANSI driver
for ANSI display! No more ANSI conflicts! No extra memory
wasted!
Delete or Rename QWK packets from the packet selection screen.
KingQWK has the capability of a "TWIT" file to exclude
messages either from configured users or those with defined
strings in the subject field.
KingQWK also has a unique "Magnet" file which is the reverse of
the "TWIT" file. Here user's messages or subject text strings can
be defined so that ONLY these messages are read.
FIDO compliance toggle to use only standard ASCII in QUOTING
and Taglines with no tear bars.
Full Tagline support for multiple tagline files. Taglines may be
up to 75 characters long.
DESQview aware
Support for remote QWK mail door configuration including QMAIL4,
MarkMail, and Tomcat!
Mouse support is available for rat fans.
25/43/50 line video support
KingQWK has the ability to swap-out to XMS, EMS or DISK during
DOS shells leaving a mere 1.8k still in memory.
Read flags and bookmarks are fully supported and configurable for
those who like to only read part of a mail packet at a time.
Configurable personal message bell.
Message indexing and sorting by message number, date, subject,
source, or recipient.
Print and Save messages individually, or all messages: in the
current conference, containing a keyword or phrase in the
subject, from a user or to a user.
New files, bulletins, and News viewing in full ANSI.
Complete archiver configuration
KingQWK is capable of handling up to 10,000 messages PER
CONFERENCE and over 32,000 conferences. This allows reading of
very large archived mail packets created with QWKMerge which
allows you to store BBS mail into packets as large as you have
disk space to accomodate.
KingQWK allows for trimming of QWK packets by deleting
specific messages saving only the messages you want. If you make
a mistake you can unkill a message before you merge the QWK
packet.
Kill and UnKill messages individually, or all messages: in the
current QWK packet, in the current conference, containing a
keyword or phrase in the subject, from a user or to a user.
Note: The QWKMerge utility performs the actual killing of flagged
messages during the merge process.
Enjoy the program!
Installation
To install KingQWK, unZIP the .ZIP file into a directory in your DOS
path. Your reader directory may be used or you may put KingQWK
into a directory of its own.
If you want to run KingQWK from a directory that is neither the current
directory nor on the DOS path, you can use the "SET QWKMDIR=" DOS command
to tell the program where to look for its help and configuration files.
i.e. SET KQWKDIR=C:\KINGQWK. You may type this at the DOS prompt to set
the environment variable, or use it in a BATch file.
Two of the programs in the .ZIP file are necessary for operation. These
two files are KINGQWK.EXE and KINGCFG.EXE. See "Overview of KingQWK"
for the functions of each of these programs. A third necessary file,
KINGQWK.CTL, will be created by KINGCfg in the current directory. This
file saves the configuration data on paths, colors, and so forth.
Using KingCfg
______________________________________________________________________________
Step-by-Step Instructions
You may press [F1] at any time for on-line help.
Before using KingQWK,
1. Change to the subdirectory containing KINGCFG.EXE and enter
"KINGCFG" (without the quotation marks) at the DOS prompt, then
press [Enter]. You will see the title page for KingCfg. This
will automatically erase in a few seconds.
2. In the unregistered version, you will next see a screen advising you
how to register the program. Registered users will not see this
message. If you are using the unregistered version, press the
indicated function key to exit the screen.
3. The main menu for KingCfg looks like this:
┌─────────────────────────[ KingCfg Main Menu ]────────────────────────┐
│ Help Paths Utilities Colors Default Flags Quit │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Selecting "H" for Help or pointing and clicking on "Help" with your
mouse brings up a copyright page that reminds you that [F1] brings up
context-sensitive help and that [Esc] exits the help screens.
You may exit this or any other help screen by pressing the [Esc] key
or pointing and clicking on the word "Quit" with your mouse.
4. From the Main Menu, select "P" for Paths or point and click on
"Paths" with your mouse.
┌──────────────────────────────[ Paths ]──────────────────────────────┐

│ Twit Subject Path: TWITSUBJ │
│ Magnet Name Path: TWITNAME │
│ Magnet Subj Path: TWITSUBJ │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Fill in the information for each of the paths. The first three are
necessary for the successful operation of KingQWK. The last six are
optional depending upon your particular configuration. It is not
necessary to enter the trailing forward slash; the program will do
it for you if you forget.
You may move around in the listing by using the arrow keys or your
mouse. Press [Enter] after the Magnet Subj Path entry to save your
entries and return to the Main Menu. You can also use ^[Enter] to
save the information at any time. The program will prompt you to
create any directories that do not currently exist on your disk.
┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Pressing [Esc] from the Paths menu will exit without saving! │
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Please note:
- The "QWK Path" tells KingQWK where to look to find your QWK
message packets.
- The "REP Path" tells KingQWK where to place your REP reply
message packets for uploading to the BBS.
- The "Working Dir Path" should be a "scratch" directory for
KingQWK to use for temporary file storage during processing.
It need not exist beforehand as the KingQWK will create and
remove it during processing. Do NOT use your root directory for
this path.
The working directory may be located on a RAM disk providing
there is sufficient space available.
┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ The working directory should NOT be one used by any other │
│ program. IT WILL BE REMOVED BY KingQWK UPON COMPLETION OF │
│ PROCESSING. │
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
- The "ASCII Message Path" tells KingQWK the default location to
use when saving message to an ASCII file.
Note that this is only the default path and can be overridden
when actually saving messages.
- The "Tagline File" tells KingQWK where to find taglines.
Note if your default tagline path in KingCfg is a true path,
KingQWK will allow you to select the desired tagline file from a
pick list. Note: If you use this option, all tagline files
must use a .TAG file name extension.
- The "Twit Name Path" is a default path to a directory (and
optionally, a file) for KingQWK to use when searching for twit
name files. If the Twit Name option is turned on in KingCfg,
the names contained in the twit name file will be matched
against the to and from names in the messages. KingQWK will
then skip any messages containing any of these names.
- The "Twit Subject Path" is a default path to a directory (and
optionally, a file) for KingQWK to use when searching for twit
subject files. If the Twit Subject option is turned on in
KingCfg, the words and/or phrases contained in the twit subject
file will be matched against the subject text in the messages.
KingQWK will then skip any messages containing any of these
words and/or phrases.
- The "Magnet Name Path" is a default path to a directory (and
optionally, a file) for KingQWK to use when searching for
magnetic name files. If the Magnet Name option is turned on in
KingCfg, the names contained in the magnet name file will be
matched against the to and from names in the messages. KingQWK
will then only display messages containing one of these names.
- The "Magnet Subject Path" is a default path to a directory (and
optionally, a file) for KingQWK to use when searching for
magnetic subject files. If the Magnet Subject option is turned
on in KingCfg, the words and/or phrases contained in the
magnetic subject file will be matched against the subject text
in the messages. KingQWK will then only display any messages
containing any of these words or phrases.

- Setting the "Conference Sort" option to Y will cause KingQWK to
automaticaly sort the BBS conference selection list using a
three tier sort. The first tier will always be Personal,
Replies and the Main conference. The second tier is an
alphabetical listing of only those conferences containing
messages. The thrid tier is an alphabetical listing of all
the remaining conferences. Setting this option to N will
cause KingQWK to list the conferences numerically. A setting
of A will cause KingQWK to ask before sorting the
conferences.
- "Taglines" can be managed by any of the following:
None - No tagline at all (Registered version only)
Edit - Allows you to edit your tagline
File - Allows you to select your tagline from a file
Static - Use the same tagline for every message
Rotate - KingQWK will automatically use a successive tagline
from your tagline file.
Ask - KingQWK will ask you which option to use when you
your message.
- "Tagline Type" allows you to choose between the normal tagline
format
---

Note: This default can be overridden at any time while
reading messages in KingQWK.
- "Save" allows you the option to set your default ASCII message
save method to:
To - save all messages in the current conference to
someone
From - save all the messages in the current conference
from someone
Keyword(s) - save all the messages in the current conference
where the subject contains specified text

- "Bulletin listing" allows you the option to have bulletins
displayed by:
An internal listing utility which allows pausing the display
at any point.
An external shell program such as LIST.
An external ANSI viewing program.
- "News Listing" allows you the option to have news listings
displayed by:
An internal listing utility which allows pausing the display
at any point.

listings displayed by:
An internal listing utility which allows pausing the display
at any point.
An external shell program such as LIST.
An external ANSI viewing program.
- "Quoted text in Reply or Separate file" allows you the option to
have the current message quoted directly in the reply file
(REPLY.TXT) or a separate file (MESSAGE.TXT).
- Setting the "Add message header to quoted message" flag to Y
will cause the message header to be quoted along with the
message text.
- The "Internal listing speed" setting allows you to control the
speed of the internal listing utility. It can be set to any
value from 0 (fastest setting) to 9 (slowest setting).
- The "Quoting character" is the character that will be used after
the initials of the person being quoted in the quoted text in
the reply. e.g. "MK>quoted text" or "MK│quoted text."
- The "Swap during shell" flag tells KingQWK that is has the
ability to swap the majority of its program and data memory to
EMS or XMS memory as well as to disk. Enabling this feature
will greatly increase the memory available when shelling to the
archive utilities and text editor as well as direct DOS shells.
- If "Swap drive" is enabled and KingQWK finds itself unable to
swap to EMS or XMS memory, it will attempt to swap to disk.
This option will allow you to specify which drive it will use.
You can set it to any drive letter currently available on your
system. Leaving this option blank will cause KingQWK to use the
default drive.
- Setting the "Allow aliases" option to Y will allow you to use an
alias (a name other than the one the BBS has for you) when
replying and entering new messages.
Note: In most instances this feature is only usable if you are
the sysop or have net mail status on the BBS. Otherwise, the
mail door willmost likely reject all messages which are not from
your usual log on name.
- Setting the "Use Twit filter names" to Y will cause KingQWK to
load the list of names in your twit name file. Any messages
containing names in that file will be filtered out during your
current message reading session.
- Setting the "Use Twit filter subjects" will cause KingQWK to
load the list of words and/or phrases in your twit subject file.
Any messages containing words and/or phrases from that file will
be filtered out during your current message reading session.
- Setting the "Magnet filter names" to Y will cause KingQWK to
load the list of names in your magnetic name file. Only
messages containing names in that file will be displayed during
your current message reading session.
- Setting the "Use Magnet filter subjects" will cause KingQWK to
load the list of words and/or phrases in your magnetic filter
subject file. Only messages containing words and/or phrases
from that file in the subject field will be displayed during
your message reading session.
8. From the Main Menu, pressing [Esc], selecting "Q" for Quit or point

KingQWK will track which messages you have read. The + and - keys
will goto the next/last message whether it has been read or not.
The [Enter] and [SpaceBar] will go to the next unread message. If
you enter a conference, you will be placed in the next unread
message. When you select a conference where you have already read
all of the messages, you will be prompted as to whether or not you
wish to re-read them. The bookmark will mark the last message you
read in the last conference you were in before exiting the packet.
When re-entering the packet, you will be placed automatically in
that same message.
