DVNet has been working on improving distribution in
Zone 2. Regional Coordinators for each country are
being set up to make the application process and link
map maintenance easier to track. Ronald Faber at
2:512/159 is the Zone 2 DVNet coordinator.
DVNet now has a special message echo for the Zone
Coordinators and Regional Coordinators to discuss
administrative problems and to work on policy
revisions.
Quarterdeck Office Systems now supports anonymous FTP
access for users who frequent Internet. They can be
reached at qdeck.com
DVNet is still in the discussion stage concerning
expanded support for DV/X. The size of the ported
applications is quite large and disk space requirements
as well and the cost of moving the software between
zones is significant. At the present time, DVNet does
not support DV/X software larger than 100k and does not
carry any game software.
DVNet is working on behalf of IFDC to develop a
centralized FDN information distribution location for
each zone. If the Zone Coordinators agree, the next
step will be to begin collecting policy docs, info
files, application forms etc from ALL FDN's and
determining the locations of each zone's info site.
The application is contained in DVN-INF.*
Zone 1 requests to join DVNet should be routed to:
1:355/38 or routed through the nearest DVNet hub or
1:13/13 if connection problems to Alaska prevent direct
calls.
Zone 2 requests to join DVNet should be routed to:
2:512/223 Ronald Faber Zone 2 DVNet Coordinator
2:201/111 Christer Jonson DVNet Coordinator for Scandinavia
2:250/101 Phil Burden DVNet Coordinator for the UK
2:332/201 Ermanno Iencinella DVNet Coordinator for Italy
Zone 3 or 6 requests to join DVNet should be routed to:
3:640/820 Paul Marwick Zone 3 DVNet Coordinator
6:700/1 Samson Luk Zone 6 DVNet Coordinator

ARTICLE #3 FILE_ECHO Message Echo By: Kief Morris
File distribution is becoming more and more popular. In the old days,
automated file distribution via Fidonet mailers was the province of a
handful of sysops, a privilege restricted to a limited number of nodes.
This has started to change, especially with the advent of the Filebone,
which allows new FDN's (File Distribution Nets) to have a ready-built
distribution organization, and which allows any sysop to set up the
appropriate software and get a feed of files.
The appeal of this for sysops is obvious. Download directories can be
stocked with the latest files, which have already been checked to weed
out hacks, trojans, and virus infections. This "stocking" takes place
automatically, while the sysop sleeps with visions of 1600+ cps
transfers dancing in their head. Participating in file distribution is
quickly becoming an essential part of operating a serious Fidonet BBS.
What's been lacking until now is a good source of information for
setting up your system to get files from the Filebone and other file
distribution systems. What software do you need? How should you set it
up? How can you fix problems with the setup? How does one link in to the
Filebone or other file distribution systems? Is there better software
out there than what you've been using?
Introducing FILE_ECHO, an echo currently being distributed with plans to
reach the Zone 1 Backbone. This is a support echo for file distribution
software and related utilities. It is also intended to be a source of
information about new programs and utilities. Thirdly, it's a place to
ask basic questions about how one gets connected to FDN's. FILE_ECHO is
a learning ground for sysops new to file moving; a source of information
for sysops already involved in it, but interested in improving their
methods for doing so; and a forum for software authors to get feedback
from the users of their programs.
FILE_ECHO is a sister echo to FILE_REQ, the file announcement/file
search echo already on the Z1 Backbone. It is also hoped to find
reliable gateways to and into Zone 2, as well as other zones.
For information on getting a feed, contact 1:110/210. If you currently
participate in file distribution, especially with the Filebone, mention
who your uplink is, and be sure to let them know you are interested. In
many cases we may be able to arrange a link through existing file
distribution channels, until the echo reaches the backbone.

Updated April 3, 1993
The following programs are those known to me as being the latest
available versions of those useful in automatic routeable distribution
of files via Fidonet compatible mailers. Obsolete programs are not
listed, being defined as programs which are over two years old and not
apparently in common use. The accuracy of this list is not guaranteed.
If you know of additional programs, or later versions of listed ones,
please let me know at 1:110/210 or in the FILE_ECHO, FILE_MOVERS, or SERVICES

ARTICLE #6 Please No Re-Hatching By: Ray Kaliss
Please No Re-Hatching
Keep it Fun For All
Read The FDN's Policy
A recent phenomenon surrounding FDN's.. and one that needs
to be looked at.. is the possibility of some fido node
somewhere.. obtaining some FDN's file feed from off-fidonet and
re-hatching them into some fido compatible network.
This of course in my opinion and no doubt in other FDN heads
opinions.. is more than a no-no.
In that the FDN may be a copyrighted network.. it is perhaps
time for FDN's to exercise more control over where and how the
files they hatch are going.
The files themselves of course are shareware and must be
distributed according to the freedoms and the limitations the
author specifies in the license agreement.. but the hatch
process, as indeed being the service that the FDN provides.. is
arguably copyrighted as the product of the service of the FDN.
That the FDN management wants to maintain some control over the
distribution is clear for management and for liability reasons.
Please.. if you are receiving an FDN's file areas.. treat them
as that FDN management desires and do not rehatch into some
other channel. Let the fido-tic go it's route inside fidonet and
do not transfer an FDN files from one type service(example: Internet)
to another(example: back into fido).

ARTICLE #7 GSDS About File By: John Grove
GSDS - Its Function
John Le Duc - International coord.
John Grove - Fidonet zone 1 coord.
Mike Fisher - Fidonet zone 2 coord.
The first question that is usually asked about GSDS is
"what is it"? GSDS is the Genealogy Software Distribution
System. A system that was created in May of 1991 for the
purpose of sharing genealogy related files with other
systems, to keep existing files updated, to assist
authors of genealogy software in updating existing programs,
and to encourage new authors in their creative efforts.
The boards involved do *not* have to be Genealogy related.
The only requirements of the sysop are:
1) It is recommended that any system carrying GSDS be
hooked into the Fidonet GENSYSOP echo. This is where announcements
and changes (if any) to the system are made known.
2) No charge may be made for access to the GSDS file area.
This does not include a general charge, where it is required,
for access to the full BBS. No one is allowed to recover
costs by charging for access specifically to GSDS.
3) The use of TICK (2.0 or above) is the standard method of
transmission/reception for these files.
4) Systems in the network must fly the UGSDS flag in the
FidoNet nodelist if their respective NC/RC will allow its use.
Not all nodes can use this flag due to a FidoNet incongruity.
We may, at some time, have to do away with its use all together.
5) GSDS may NOT be ported outside the Fidonet environment without
EXPRESS permission from the International Coordinator.
6) All effort must be made to receive the areas from the Fidonet
filebone system prior to asking for a feed from one of the
original GSDS filebone members.
The following areas are included:
GENEPRG - Genealogy Programs - databases, Census database
files, Calendar Creation files, Helpful files,
(i.e. Brother's Keeper, Family Scrapbook, Census
Research Tool, Cemetery Research Database)
GENETXT - Genealogy related Text files - (i.e. GBBS listing,
information about family's, catalog information,
basic genealogy related text files, not in program
format)
GENEJEW - Programs and text Files related exclusively
to Jewish Genealogy Research.
GENEDEMO- Demo files of commercial programs available for the
public.
GENEFILE- File listings, released monthly, from systems
carrying GSDS. You do NOT have to hatch your files
listing if you do not desire to do so.
GENEPAF - Personal Ancestral File utility files and
information. (PAF is a Commercial genealogy
database available from the LDS Church)
GSDS is carried on the Fidonet file backbone system
as well as still being distributed via its original
distribution scheme.

NOTE: Hub sites in zone 2 are not known at this time due to
the non-availability of the GSDS nodelist flag.
The people listed above as MAJOR HUB SITES are the people
that you will need to contact about GSDS. They are the
ones that will direct you to whomever they have that might be
a closer call for you, or will provide a direct feed to you.
Those indicated with a * are a TMS Hubsite as well, so if
you get TMS, or are planning on adding TMS, you will need to
contact these people to save you a dime or two.
NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE
Please make an effort to obtain your connection via
a local filebone file hauler system. Space on the above
systems is limited and may not be available.
Presently there are only 3 HATCH sites - any software needing
to be hatched out into the system must be sent to either
John Grove, John Le Duc, or Mike Fisher. NO hatching is allowed
without first obtaining full permission from the associated
zone coordinator.
There are only a couple of exceptions to this situation --
this is the release of the GBBS listing, and of PAF related
files, which come from Barbara Bennett in Maryland.
In addition, files lists may be hatched into GENEFILE from
any point in the system on a monthly basis. This file list
must include the Julian date as part of the file name. An
example would be XXXXXYYY.ZIP where the XXXXX is unique to
the originating system and the YYY is the Julian date.
When you become a member of GSDS, you will be required to
carry your own weight. If you supply files to another system
in the future, you will have to make sure that you poll your
hubsite to get the files, to make these files available to
those systems underneath you.
When you add a system to your area to pick up files, it is
imperative that you notify the coordinators via GENSYSOP.
so we can keep somewhat of a topology of where the files are
going, and who is giving them to the systems.
There are very few "real rules" other than porting outside of
Fidonet and designated hatch sites.
We do hope that this has helped in explaining just what GSDS
is and, please, do not hesitate to ask questions - we are not
afraid to answer them.

ARTICLE #8 May Issues News From CAD*NET(sm) By: Stan Bimson
CAD*Net(sm) File Distribution Network - News date: 05/08/93
-----------------------------------------------------------
While CAD*Net was first started to distribute AutoCAD related files, which
have been our main file areas, we have added software support areas for both
an AutoSketch and Intergraph. Like most FDN's we receive files from third
party shareware authors, both independents and ASP authors. Since CAD*Net is
a member supported FDN and we have open hatching, we also get files from
within the network itself.
But now, one of the largest software companies has taken an interest in what
we have been doing. After several months of discussion and system testing we
have linked in Autodesk USA, producers of AutoCAD, to Fidonet and CAD*Net.
In our discussions with Autodesk it became clear that CAD*Net's efforts
paralleled their Global Village project concept and would add new avenues
for them to distribute and receive files.
Below is a clip from Autodesk's latest AGV (Autodesk Global Village) update
which outlines their views on AGV and their venture into the world of
Fidonet based networks.
______________________________________________________________________
Subject: Global Village project update
Author: carlb
Date: 5/3/93 12:54 PM
A year ago in the first week of May we set out to create the Autodesk
Global Village CD-ROM, seed the planet with discs, and foster a world-
wide network of Autodesk BBS sites.
In this past year we created our first CD-ROM and distributed 2,500
copies of Volume 1 Number 1. As it turns out, a global BBS network is
already in place, so we simply plugged into it.
Within Autodesk new BBS sites are popping up regularly and existing
sites are expanding. K.B. Lee has established a BBS for Autodesk
Taiwan. Ted Cheng is helping a local user group in Hong Kong set up an
Autodesk BBS. In our backyard, John Sergneri has established a BBS for
Sonoma county. Stephan Nilsfelt continues development of Autodesk On-
Line in Gothenburg. And Richard Harding is upgrading the BBS system in
London.
The BBS in Sausalito (1:125/289) now carries three international
message echoes: A_CAD, CAD-CAM and C_ECHO. We also participate in the
CAD*net file distribution network, which automates the exchange of new
files among CAD related BBS sites. In the next few weeks we will begin
carrying conference echoes from the Professional CAD and Graphics
network (PCGnet) -- a young network with BBS sites in Australia,
Canada, France, New Zealand, Scotland and the US. Locally, the San
Francisco network (1:125) has recently established a permanent
Internet/Usenet gateway that opens a whole new arena for us.
As we make plans for the next year we are looking for new ways to
employ the CD-ROM and the global network as media for sharing our
support resources. As always, your questions, comments and suggestions
are very welcome.
Think global! Autodesk Global Village

SDN International(sm)
We at SDN are awaiting the new release of ARJ 2.40 with expectation.
Our .SDN files have been PAK (Nogate Consulting) for a few years but with
the release of ARJ, any day now, we will be switching over. The difficult
part for a time, will be that we will be keeping the .SDN extension. It
will not be long however before users get the hang of it.
Any sysop now receiving SDN files and echo should consider registering as
an official SDN site.
