  7. First let me say that I have only used my SkyLink demodulator for 
  8. about 2 days so don't expect me to have ALL the answers just yet.
  9.  
  10.         Requirements:  A C-Band Satelite system with a baseband out 
  11.                        (they sometimes use other names but almost 
  12.                         all units have this output)
  13.  
  14.                        A SkyLink Demodulator
  15.  
  16.                        A membership on SkyBoard

  19. Here's some information about SkyLink that I have picked up.  To 
  20. make a long story short, it's a cheap way to pick up files off your 
  21. satelite dish without paying long distance.  You need a special 
  22. demodulator ($130US) from Home Shopping Club at 1-800-366-4010 and 
  23. you need a membership on the SkyNet BBS ($50 but going up to 
  24. $96/year real soon).
  25.

  33. For that you get a more or less steady stream of files.  You receive a 
  34. text file once in a while that lists the type of files to expect each 
  35. day (ie Saturday - Games, Sunday - Music, Monday - Education...).  In 
  36. addition you get a file list on occasion which gives the names and 
  37. descriptions of the files you should expcect to see.
  38.  
  39. SkyLink also sends out weather maps in PCX format and a number of 
  40. Fidonet Echo areas in .QWK format.  They are just getting into 
  41. providing the TV listings for satelite dish owners but the service is 
  42. still in beta testing.
  43.  
  44. Good points:
  45.  
  46. 1) Free Files - cool new thing to do with your dish!
  47.  
  48. 2) Bad Points 
  49.  
  50. You have to have your dish tuned to Home Shopping Club (F4-15) to 
  51. get the files.  Not a big problem since the files repeat fairly 
  52. often.  You can just leave your dish on at night and get the files 
  53. you need.
  54.  
  55.    The software REALLY lacks even the most basic features.  For an 
  56. example, you can NOT have your software reject files from a certain 
  57. area.  You couldn't, for example, instruct your software to skip all 
  58. the weather maps or turn off the GAMES area, etc.  You can't instruct 
  59. your software to pick up JUST certain files and forget the rest.
  60.  
  61.    The concept is to make SkyLink a 2 way project.  You would send a 
  62. file request to SkyNet BBS and the files would turn up on your system 
  63. in a few hours.  This feature is not included in the software and 
  64. doesn't seem to be in place yet.
  65.  
  66.     The next release of the software is due shortly so perhaps this 
  67. will be fixed soon.  In addition, they plan to release a new 
  68. service aimed mainly at the BBS sysop.  You may need to buy a 
  69. different demodulator... time will tell.  The service will be 
  70. called SKYLINK/PLANET CONNECT.  That's about all I know about it.

  156.  ║  We now have a audio subcarrier operating on G1-9 audio subcarrier 5.8  ║
  157.  ║  Mhz. A looping announcement is now being transmitted to help everyone  ║
  158.  ║  find the channel. At this time we are working on some phone            ║

  162.  ║  If you do not know how to adjust the audio subcarrier on your receiver ║

  165.  ║  panel that tunes the audio. Many IRD's have a up and down button on    ║
  166.  ║  the remote control for this purpose. A few IRD's require a switch to   ║

  181.                        THE FUTURE OF SKYLINK: PART 3

  184.   ║ We here at Skylink/Planet Connect hope that all of you came through      ║
  185.   ║ the Christmas and New Year period without gaining too much weight.       ║
  186.   ║ Thinks have been very busy here at the office getting ready for more     ║
  187.   ║ new services for 1993. Version 3.0 beta is now being tested in-house     ║
  188.   ║ and will begin initial testing on the satellite in about 2 weeks.        ║
  189.   ║ Several new conferences have been added to the Skymail system and the    ║
  190.   ║ response has been excellent. One of the new conferences is the TVRO.     ║
  191.   ║ This should be very interesting for many of you since it deals with      ║
  192.   ║ home satellite information. Let us know which others you would like to   ║
  193.   ║ see. We will be sending a list of all the different ones in a few        ║
  194.   ║ days. We can start sending those as long as room permits.                ║
  195.   ║                                                                          ║
  196.   ║ We have worked on pricing during the last few weeks and have been very   ║
  197.   ║ careful about adding high expenses that could increase the               ║
  198.   ║ subscription to unrealistic levels. The following services will be       ║
  199.   ║ added to Skylink starting in January and February:                       ║

  201.   ║ TV LISTINGS: This will be a complete hour by hour listing of all         ║
  202.   ║ programming on approximately 50 different channels sent via satellite.   ║
  203.   ║ All of the movies and programs will have extended descriptions on the    ║
  204.   ║ content of each program. Custom configurations for each user will        ║
  205.   ║ allow unwanted programs to be excluded from the display to help with     ║
  206.   ║ the amount of information. Time zone adjustments are built into the      ║
  207.   ║ program as well.                                                         ║

  209.   ║ INSTANT ACCESS WEATHER: We will be changing the weather to allow         ║
  210.   ║ quicker access to the information by sending overlays of maps instead    ║
  211.   ║ of the entire PCX files. This will allow the information to be sent      ║
  212.   ║ unziped and quick access from the main menu of version 3. This will be   ║
  213.   ║ added in March.                                                          ║

  215.   ║ FIDONET CONFERENCES: Read and exchange messages with computer users      ║
  216.   ║ around the world with the wide variety of messages being sent daily.     ║
  217.   ║ Replies can be forwarded through Skyboard.                               ║

  219.   ║ FILE REQUEST SYSTEM:                                                     ║
  220.   ║ New files are being added to Skyboard to improve the list of available   ║
  221.   ║ files. The file transmit option has already been added to the files      ║
  222.   ║ directory of Skyboard but the uplink portion will not be ready until     ║
  223.   ║ the Version 3 system starts up.                                          ║

  225.   ║ IMPROVED SHAREWARE AND PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE SECTION:                   ║
  226.   ║ Since the Version 3 software will allow marking of the files you want    ║
  227.   ║ to receive, more files can be sent daily without the problem of          ║
  228.   ║ filling up your hard drive. The quality of these files is also           ║
  229.   ║ improving with our connection to the SDN and other sources of up to      ║
  230.   ║ date files.                                                              ║

  232.   ║ This is most of the new services that we will be added in the early      ║
  233.   ║ part of 1993, but there will be constant improvements to the software    ║

  237.   ║ That equates to only $8.00 per month. As you probably know that amount   ║

  240.   ║ Plant Connect coming online some of you may wish to change to that       ║

  253.    the sysop of the board that you have uploaded the packet to. SKYMAIL.REP
  254.    is only designed to work on SKYBOARD BBS. A lot of time and efford on my
  255.    part has gone into preparing these QWK files so that it can be
  256.    distributed as fast as possible over the satellite. Please take the time
  257.    to be a little carefull and read the documentation that is included with
  258.    the SLMR and OLX or whatever offline mail-reader that you use. It will
  259.    explain things a hell of a lot better than I ever could.
