  87.             Some Ideas on Scouts' Owns 
  88.  
  89. For an open Troop, or for Troops in camp, I think the Scouts' 
  90. Own should be open to all denominations, and carried on in such 
  91. manner as to offend none. There should not be any special form, 
  92. but it should abound in the right spirit, and should be 
  93. conducted not from any ecclesiastical point of view, but from 
  94. that of the boy. Everything likely to make an artificial 
  95. atmosphere should be avoided. We do not want a kind of imposed 
  96. Church Parade, but a voluntary uplifting of their hearts by the 
  97. boys in thanksgiving for the joys of life, and a desire on their 
  98. part to seek inspiration and strength for greater love and 
  99. service for others. 
  100.  
  101. A Scouts' Own should have as big an effect on the boys as any 
  102. service in Church, if in conducting the Scouts' Own we remember 
  103. that boys are not grown men, and if we go by the pace of the 
  104. youngest and most uneducated of those present. Boredom is not 
  105. reverence, nor will it breed religion. 
  106.  
  107. To interest the boys, the Scouts' Own must be a cheery and 
  108. varied function. Short hymns (tree verses are as a rule quite 
  109. enough-never more than four); understandable prayers; a good 
  110. address from a man who really understands boys (a homely "talk" 
  111. rather than an address), which grips the boys, and in which they 
  112. may laugh or applaud as the spirit moves them, so that they take 
  113. a real interest in what is said. If a man cannot make his point 
  114. to keen boys in ten minutes he ought to be shot! If he has not 
  115. got them keen, it would be better not to hold a Scouts' Own at 
  116. all.

  131. I want it to be gain, not loss -- good, not evil -- 
  132.    success, not failure -- so 
  133. that I shall never regret the price I paid for today.

  1452. The Spirit lives, there is no doubt, 
  1453. Within the heart of every Scout, 
  1454. The hope lives  on, the dreams survive, 
  1455. The Scouting spirit is alive!

  1458. There lived a man who sought to sow 
  1459. The seeds of brotherhood of man, 
  1460. And there the spirit first began. 
  1461.  
  1462. The Scouting spirit spread about 
  1463. To nations east, west, north and south, 
  1464. And soon, on every land and shore, 
  1465. Young men were taught the Scouting Law. 
  1466.  
  1467. We camped and learned of nature's ways, 
  1468. We gloried in our youthful days, 
  1469. We ventured where all others feared, 
  1470. Because we knew we were prepared.

  1472. The world has changed as years went by, 
  1473. Society's values went awry, 
  1474. And many ask, "What is the worth 
  1475. of Scouting on this wretched earth?"

  1477. But each new Scout who learns our law 
  1478. Brings with him hope, and much, much more; 
  1479. Each generation of Scouts gives 
  1480. The proof that Scouting's spirit lives.

  1482. The treasured values of the past 
  1483. Still guide Scouts of today; they last 
  1484. In spite of changes that we see 
  1485. Around us in society.
