  61. Three new releases join "The Infinite Voyage" series this month from PBS
  62. Home Video.  "The Search for Ancient Americans" focuses on the secrets to
  63. our own past and the search for ancient civilizations in the Americas.  
  64. "The Keepers of Eden" takes the viewer on a tour of innovative zoos and 
  65. parks that are struggling to stop the onslaught of rapidly disintegrating
  66. species of wildlife.  "Living with Disaster" takes a look at the ongoing
  67. effort of scientists to predict when and where a natural disaster will
  68. strike next.

  242. Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney provide top-notch performances in "The
  243. Cutting Edge," a love story about a feisty, tart-tongued figure skater
  244. and her green partner, a former hockey player.
  245.  
  246. Kate (Kelly) awes her trainers and her public with showstopping skating
  247. talent, but has a tendency to blow it in competition and blame her
  248. partners.  An injury has shortened Doug Dugan's (Sweeney) promising
  249. hockey career, so he hesitantly takes on the unenviable task of learning
  250. to figure skate with Kate.
  251.  
  252. Predictably but nonetheless touchingly, the two become friends and
  253. slowly develop a grudging respect for each other, then fall in love.
  254. But Kate is engaged to a stuffy businessman she only sees a few times
  255. a year, and Doug is used to relationships that last one night only and
  256. don't necessarily involve even first names.  However, neither can deny
  257. the sparks that fly, a well-portrayed chemistry that enhances the film
  258. terrifically.

  260. Despite an ending that doesn't do its job completely, that is, does not
  261. adequately wrap up the fast-moving plot, "The Cutting Edge" purveys good
  262. movie entertainment suitable for the all but very young viewers.  Those
  263. who enjoy watching professional figure skating at its best will discover
  264. an added plus.

  274. "THE NAKED GUN 2½"  STARRING LESLIE NEILSON, PRISCILLA BEAULIEU-PRESLEY

  276. Ridiculous and rambunctious, silly and savory, "The Naked Gun 2½:  The
  277. Smell of Fear" entertains with slapstick and wit of the highest quality,
  278. with not a shred of realistic intent.  Set upon exposing a secret, evil
  279. organization dedicated to shape the president's nuclear policy to suit their
  280. own purposes.  You'll laugh more through the opening credits than through
  281. most other comedies' entire lengths!

  285. "DEFENDING YOUR LIFE"  STARRING MERYL STREEP, ALBERT BROOKS

  287. In the most creative (and palpatable) approach to the life-after-death
  288. concept the cinema has ever seen (and that includes "Ghost"), "Defending
  289. Your Life" stars Brooks as a man who dies in a car accident, then must
  290. go on trial in the afterworld to determine what he has accomplished.
  291. If he wins, he advances to the next level of existence; if he loses, he
  292. gets sent back to earth (reincarnated).  While in this middle ground,
  293. he meets and falls in love with Streep, a fascinating and delightful
  294. character who helps Brooks in his quest.

  298. "THELMA AND LOUISE"  STARRING SUSAN SARANDON, GEENA DAVIS

  300. Two women set out on a short getaway vacation that ends up being the
  301. ride of their lives in "Thelma & Louise," a movie that combines comedy
  302. and drama most successfully.  As they set out to escape their lives, each 
  303. for a different reason, for just a few days, they end up on the run
  304. but still having fun.  A must see for both men and women, "Thelma & Louise"
  305. was widely touted as a "feminist" venture; don't buy it.  Although I have
  306. nothing against the term at all, to label such a classic film as "for
  307. women only" denies the other sex a chance at a highly entertaining couple
  308. of hours.

  312. "STAR TREK VI:  THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY"
  313. STARRING WILLIAM SHATNER, LEONARD NIMOY
  314.  
  315. I would be one of the last people on earth one could expect to rate
  316. highly something with "Star Trek" in its title.  However,  here I go:
  317. the latest "ST" flick delivers the action and adventure it promises,
  318. along with the goofy fun that created Trekkies and merged them into
  319. popular culture.  "The Undiscovered Country" is peace--peace in the
  320. galaxy, including with the Klingons, the Federation's longstanding enemy
  321. who will now die out without the Federation's aid.

  325. "FATHER OF THE BRIDE"  STARRING DIANE KEATON, STEVE MARTIN

  327. Martin is brilliant as the well-meaning but worrying father of the
  328. soon-to-be bride, back from several months of education abroad with news
  329. that she is getting married.  Keaton is equally wonderful as his wife,
  330. the voice of logic.  Their story is one with which many parents are sure
  331. to identify, from the announcement of the engagement right through the
  332. ceremony.

  336. "FRIED GREEN TOMATOES"  STARRING JESSICA TANDY, KATHY BATES

  338. Bates befriends Tandy while visiting a rest home in "Fried Green Tomatoes,"
  339. and is whisked away to another time and place through Tandy's tales of
  340. two best buddies in a small southern town in the 1940's.  Back then, and
  341. particularly in the South, the roles of women and blacks were much different,
  342. but these two defied the rules and refused to be bogged down by society's
  343. regulations.   What stands out in this film are the amazing characterizations,
  344. brough springing to life by tremendous acting performances by Mary Stuart
  345. Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker.

  349. "WAYNE'S WORLD"  STARRING MIKE MYERS, DANA CARVEY, ROB LOWE

  351. Who'd a thunk it?  A movie based on a looney "Saturday Night Live" skit
  352. comes off with a laugh factory of entertainment in a full-length film,
  353. amalgamating "NOT!" and "We're Not Worthy!" into household phrasology.
  354. Ex-squeeze me, but although highly marketed to the young crowd, it manages
  355. to keep them watching without any violence or sex to speak of.  "Excellent!"

  359. "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST"  (ANIMATED)
  360.  
  361. It is no wonder this film was nominated for Best Picture by the Academy of
  362. Film Arts and Sciences.  Although it did not take home that particular
  363. Oscar, its creators did not all go home empty-handed, as the movie picked
  364. up awards for Best Original Song and Best Original Soundtrack.  Positively
  365. a tremendous achievement, "Beauty and the Beast" provides an awe-inspiring
  366. experience for all ages, definitely the best home video release of the year.

  370. "DEAD AGAIN"  STARRING KENNETH BRANAGH, EMMA THOMPSON, ANDY GARCIA,
  371.                ROBIN WILLIAMS
  372.  
  373. In a stirring and suspenseful interpretation of the concept of reincarnation,
  374. Branagh and Thompson (real-life husband and wife) deliver powerful performances
  375. in duel roles as lovers of the past and present.  Thompson portrays an
  376. amnestic woman who stumbles into a convent unaware of any of her past,
  377. suffering from terrifying flashbacks and nightmares, experiences that turn
  378. out to be not from this lifetime, but from another existence altogether,
  379. one involving a tragic love story that is resurrected in the present
  380. to make things right.

  384. "JFK"  STARRING KEVIN COSTNER
  385.  
  386. Although extreme in length and radical in content, "JFK" is, nevertheless,
  387. an outstanding cinematic achievement, a no-holds-barred attempt at explaining
  388. the death of John F. Kennedy.  Although long considered suspicious in nature,
  389. the assasination of JFK has never before created such forceful controversy,
  390. and the movie may actually have had an effect on further investigations
  391. into the matter.  Regardless, Oliver Stone's "JFK" deserves a look-see by
  392. anyone with even a passing interest in the subject.
