"THE CUTTING EDGE" * * *
Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney provide top-notch performances in "The
Cutting Edge," a love story about a feisty, tart-tongued figure skater
and her green partner, a former hockey player.
Kate (Kelly) awes her trainers and her public with showstopping skating
talent, but has a tendency to blow it in competition and blame her
partners. An injury has shortened Doug Dugan's (Sweeney) promising
hockey career, so he hesitantly takes on the unenviable task of learning
to figure skate with Kate.
Predictably but nonetheless touchingly, the two become friends and
slowly develop a grudging respect for each other, then fall in love.
But Kate is engaged to a stuffy businessman she only sees a few times
a year, and Doug is used to relationships that last one night only and
don't necessarily involve even first names. However, neither can deny
the sparks that fly, a well-portrayed chemistry that enhances the film
terrifically.
Despite an ending that doesn't do its job completely, that is, does not
adequately wrap up the fast-moving plot, "The Cutting Edge" purveys good
movie entertainment suitable for the all but very young viewers. Those
who enjoy watching professional figure skating at its best will discover
an added plus.

║ SPECIAL SECTION: 1992'S BEST HOME VIDEO RELEASES ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
(IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER)
"THE NAKED GUN 2½" STARRING LESLIE NEILSON, PRISCILLA BEAULIEU-PRESLEY
Ridiculous and rambunctious, silly and savory, "The Naked Gun 2½: The
Smell of Fear" entertains with slapstick and wit of the highest quality,
with not a shred of realistic intent. Set upon exposing a secret, evil
organization dedicated to shape the president's nuclear policy to suit their
own purposes. You'll laugh more through the opening credits than through
most other comedies' entire lengths!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"DEFENDING YOUR LIFE" STARRING MERYL STREEP, ALBERT BROOKS
In the most creative (and palpatable) approach to the life-after-death
concept the cinema has ever seen (and that includes "Ghost"), "Defending
Your Life" stars Brooks as a man who dies in a car accident, then must
go on trial in the afterworld to determine what he has accomplished.
If he wins, he advances to the next level of existence; if he loses, he
gets sent back to earth (reincarnated). While in this middle ground,
he meets and falls in love with Streep, a fascinating and delightful
character who helps Brooks in his quest.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"THELMA AND LOUISE" STARRING SUSAN SARANDON, GEENA DAVIS
Two women set out on a short getaway vacation that ends up being the
ride of their lives in "Thelma & Louise," a movie that combines comedy
and drama most successfully. As they set out to escape their lives, each
for a different reason, for just a few days, they end up on the run
but still having fun. A must see for both men and women, "Thelma & Louise"
was widely touted as a "feminist" venture; don't buy it. Although I have
nothing against the term at all, to label such a classic film as "for
women only" denies the other sex a chance at a highly entertaining couple
of hours.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY"
STARRING WILLIAM SHATNER, LEONARD NIMOY
I would be one of the last people on earth one could expect to rate
highly something with "Star Trek" in its title. However, here I go:
the latest "ST" flick delivers the action and adventure it promises,
along with the goofy fun that created Trekkies and merged them into
popular culture. "The Undiscovered Country" is peace--peace in the
galaxy, including with the Klingons, the Federation's longstanding enemy
who will now die out without the Federation's aid.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"FATHER OF THE BRIDE" STARRING DIANE KEATON, STEVE MARTIN
Martin is brilliant as the well-meaning but worrying father of the
soon-to-be bride, back from several months of education abroad with news
that she is getting married. Keaton is equally wonderful as his wife,
the voice of logic. Their story is one with which many parents are sure
to identify, from the announcement of the engagement right through the
ceremony.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"FRIED GREEN TOMATOES" STARRING JESSICA TANDY, KATHY BATES
Bates befriends Tandy while visiting a rest home in "Fried Green Tomatoes,"
and is whisked away to another time and place through Tandy's tales of
two best buddies in a small southern town in the 1940's. Back then, and
particularly in the South, the roles of women and blacks were much different,
but these two defied the rules and refused to be bogged down by society's
regulations. What stands out in this film are the amazing characterizations,
brough springing to life by tremendous acting performances by Mary Stuart
Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"WAYNE'S WORLD" STARRING MIKE MYERS, DANA CARVEY, ROB LOWE
Who'd a thunk it? A movie based on a looney "Saturday Night Live" skit
comes off with a laugh factory of entertainment in a full-length film,
amalgamating "NOT!" and "We're Not Worthy!" into household phrasology.
Ex-squeeze me, but although highly marketed to the young crowd, it manages
to keep them watching without any violence or sex to speak of. "Excellent!"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"BEAUTY AND THE BEAST" (ANIMATED)
It is no wonder this film was nominated for Best Picture by the Academy of
Film Arts and Sciences. Although it did not take home that particular
Oscar, its creators did not all go home empty-handed, as the movie picked
up awards for Best Original Song and Best Original Soundtrack. Positively
a tremendous achievement, "Beauty and the Beast" provides an awe-inspiring
experience for all ages, definitely the best home video release of the year.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"DEAD AGAIN" STARRING KENNETH BRANAGH, EMMA THOMPSON, ANDY GARCIA,
ROBIN WILLIAMS
In a stirring and suspenseful interpretation of the concept of reincarnation,
Branagh and Thompson (real-life husband and wife) deliver powerful performances
in duel roles as lovers of the past and present. Thompson portrays an
amnestic woman who stumbles into a convent unaware of any of her past,
suffering from terrifying flashbacks and nightmares, experiences that turn
out to be not from this lifetime, but from another existence altogether,
one involving a tragic love story that is resurrected in the present
to make things right.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"JFK" STARRING KEVIN COSTNER
Although extreme in length and radical in content, "JFK" is, nevertheless,
an outstanding cinematic achievement, a no-holds-barred attempt at explaining
the death of John F. Kennedy. Although long considered suspicious in nature,
the assasination of JFK has never before created such forceful controversy,
and the movie may actually have had an effect on further investigations
into the matter. Regardless, Oliver Stone's "JFK" deserves a look-see by
anyone with even a passing interest in the subject.
