DIRECTOR'S LETTER
Lee Lockwood
This is our second online issue of The Boston Kugel, a little
late, due mostly to disk crashes and other messy subjects
unrelated to the editorial process. Once again, I think we have
a stimulating mixture of articles, analysis and humor, written
by our talented members.
The emphasis of this issue is on operating systems. Bob Waters,
co-founder of this group, presents a capsule history of MS-DOS
and as usual does not spare his opinions. In the OS-2 arena,
Michael Loo and Josh Chessman look at some of the many
publications upcropping; as for Windows, Mike Ball takes us
through the many features of "Commworks," a Windows new
telecommunications suite, while Norman Baumann expresses his
general frustrations with the Windows environment.
In addition: Mike Ball on .EPS, a "universal", portable graphics
format; Dick Swift's reminiscence, "Pilgrim's Progress,"
describing his romance with CP/M computers; Jay Sage's report on
the changes to our BBS and its software; Harold Goldberg's
charming "A Quiet Day at the Computer," a tale of serial woes;
and Karen Rockow's ever-reliable "Line Noise". And I especially
recommend Ev Slosman's "BOOTCON And Me," a thorough review of a
utility that enables you to create and manage multiple
configurations, then choose which one you want on boot-up,
depending on the application.
We are always looking for submissions to the Kugel. If you have
an article or review to publish, or an idea for one, contact the
editor on this BBS, or via the Internet ("lee@world.std.com") or
Compuserve (74116,2135).

US AND THE BCS
The BCS has just moved from 1 Kendall Square, Cambridge (their
lease was up, but it was too expensive anyway), into new
quarters in Waltham:
101 First Avenue, Suite 2
Waltham, MA 02154
(617) 290-5700
290-5744 (fax)
(It's located behind the Guest Quarters Hotel, but you must enter
First Avenue from Winter Street.)
As to our relations with the BCS: back in November, Bob Grenoble
apologized to me for having omitted ZITEL from the membership
blank and listings inside BCS Magazine (or Update, or Journal,
or whatever it was called at the time). He did not know how it
happened, but it was inexcusable, and he promised to mail a
letter of apology to each ZITEL member individually.
A month later, Elaine Santangelo of the BCS Office read aloud
the text of this letter to me over the phone. It hadn't yet
been mailed, but it would be within the week, she said.
As of this writing, it is February 4th, and still no letter.
I can only say that Grenoble is consistent: he has broken every
promise he has ever made to our user group, this being the last.
---------------------------------
In the meantime, we are grateful to all those who have
contributed, generously, directly to our group for support of
the BBS. Only through such contributions can we survive. Thank
you, one and all.
