  14. NASA SPACELINK BACKGROUND

  16. NASA Spacelink runs on a Data General ECLIPSE MV-7800 minicomputer at
  17. the NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
  18. NASA Spacelink software was developed and donated to NASA by the Data
  19. General Corporation. The system has a main memory of 14 megabytes (14
  20. million characters), and disk storage space for 708 megabytes.  It runs
  21. at 300, 1200 or 2400 baud.  Data word format is 8 data bits, no parity,
  22. and 1 stop bit.  The system was made public in February, 1988.

  24. Initial support for NASA Spacelink was provided by the Educational
  25. Affairs Division at NASA Headquarters.  The NASA Spacelink data base is
  26. maintained by the Public Services and Education Branch of the Marshall
  27. Space Flight Center Public Affairs Office.  Operational support is
  28. provided by the Information Systems Office at the Marshall Center.
  29. Information on NASA scientific projects and educational programs is
  30. provided to NASA Spacelink by education specialists at NASA Headquarters
  31. and the NASA field centers.

  33. While NASA understands that people from a wide variety of backgrounds
  34. will use NASA Spacelink, the system is specifically designed for
  35. teachers.  Unlike bulletin board systems, NASA Spacelink does not
  36. provide for interaction between callers.  However, it allows teachers
  37. and other callers to leave questions and comments for NASA.
