ftp - handicap.shel.isc-br.com or 129.189.4.184
This is an anonymous ftp site that contains only disability-related
files and/or programs. There are about 40 directories with 500 or
so files/programs covering all types of disabilities. The
"Handicap BBS List", a list of 800 BBS's carrying
disability-related information, originates here.
MAC ARCHIVES SECTION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN.
Ftp - mac.archive.umich.edu
The Mac Archives at University of Michigan is pleased to announce
a new collection area for medicine and the health sciences.
Currently, the collection is small - The contents is gradually
growing in the AMSA public domain software library, but these files
are a few years old. They are am seeking any Macintosh programs,
utilities, demonstrations, or computer aided instruction related to
the health sciences. If you have been developing any type of
Macintosh medical software and would like to make it available to
the rest of the world, send it to them.
You can use ftp to get to these archives (anonymous login, any
password). There are currently no restrictions, but for load
management reasons, limits may be imposed in the future. The
medical directory is located on mac.archive.umich.edu (currently
141.211.164.153) in /mac/etc/medical.
If you are using AFS (Andrew File System) you can get to the
archive directory with:
cd /afs/umich.edu/group/itd/archive/mac/etc/medical
Currently, the medical section of the archives is being maintained
by myself, Eric Meininger (ericm@umich.edu), a medical student
attending the University of Michigan Medical School. If you have
any comments or suggestions, don't hesitate to send a message.
SUBMITTING FILES TO THE MEDICAL SECTION OF THE ARCHIVES
The best way to get files to our archive is to ftp-put them into
the incoming directory, then e-mail ericm@umich.edu and let him
know that you've placed a file. This way he'll know there are
health science files waiting within the directory, and also who to
contact if the files don't work "as advertised".
Health InfoCom Network News Page 27
Volume 6, Number 4 February 28, 1993
Another way is to e-mail the file to ericm@umich.edu. It works
just as well.
VIRUSES
Unlike other Internet "Mac" archives, we test each and every one of
the files that appears in our "incoming" directory and in our
mailboxes addressed to mac.archive. We use the most-up-to-date
virus detection inits and control panels (Disinfectant, Gatekeeper,
etc.) to insure that the files that we add to the archive are not
carrying anything that can harm your Macintosh and your (and our)
work. We also make these public domain/shareware virus detection
packages available to you as fast as we receive them in our
"utilities/virus" directory.
* Questions, Problems and comments regarding the medical
archive
* specifically should be sent to ericm@umich.edu. General

* questions should be sent to comments@mac.archive.umich.edu
M-MEDIA
ftp - M-Media.muohio.edu
This archive contains a library of medical applications created in
Authorware for both the Mac and the PC. It came online Sept. 30,
1992 and invites public domain uploads. Several readme files
provide more information.

Health InfoCom Network News Page 38
Volume 6, Number 4 February 28, 1993
National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). A significant
portion of the activities at the BCL are supported by NCRR's
Biomedical Research Technology Program (BRTP) which promotes the
application of advances in computer science and technology,
engineering, mathematics, and the physical sciences to research
problems in biology and medicine by supporting the development of
advanced research technologies. In addition to supporting the
development of new or improved technologies, the BRTP resource
program encourages the use of those developments in collaborative
research with biomedical research investigators nationally through
both collaborative interactions and service-oriented relationships.
BCL Program emphasis is on quantitative imaging including positron-
emission tomography (PET) image reconstruction utilizing
estimation-maximization (EM) methods, computational optical-
sectioning microscopy, shape modeling and segmentation, electron-
microscopic autoradiography (EMA), image acquisition and
quantitative analysis of DNA electrophoretic gels and
autoradiograms, and parallel processing.
The Resource invites program participation by research
investigators with
relevant scientific interests. The participation can be either as
a research collaborator or as a user of Resource capabilities. A
collaboration involves two-way interaction of mutual benefit,
whereas user service provides a primary benefit to the user.
Investigators wishing to explore the possibility of interactions
with the Resource at Washington University should contact us by
mail, telephone, FAX, or e-mail (preferred). Information may also
be obtained via an anonymous FTP server on the Internet on which
the Resource maintains public information including a list of

How does BIRON work?
Searches based on topics The BIRON system prompts you to type in a
topic for which you are seeking data. Your term is matched against
a list of several thousand descriptive terms arranged in associated
groups.
If an exact match is found, you are told how many datasets have
been indexed with the matching term and are offered other
associated terms which might assist in focussing your search. If
no exact match is found, lists of similarly spelled words are
offered for your selection and the process of matching begins
there.

database) or other descriptive information. 'Blast' is a program
that matches a sequence to sequences already in the database.
Messages to either must be formatted in a very specific way. To
receive directions for each send an E-mail message with the word
"help" in the the body of the message.

CENTER FOR BIOMEDICAL INFORMATICS
The Center for Biomedical Informatics maintains a software
library with 50 diskettes containing ca. 150 public-domain
medical application programs for IBM-PC-compatible
microcomputers. Most of this programs are provided in source
code (BASIC, Turbo-BASIC, dBASE III and PASCAL). In the last
three years, the Center has distributed more than 400 copies
to physicians, nurses, dentists, university lecturers and
researchers, and other professionals and students in the
Health Sciences, in exchange for a small fee per diskette,
which is used to expand the public-domain software library.
Outside contributions are welcome: if they areaccepted, the
contributor is entitled to choose any five diskettes from the
collection. The majority of the programs are in Portuguese,
but some are in English, too. A few of the programs are
offered as shareware.
To receive the catalogue in electronic form, send the
following one-line message to INFOMED@CCVAX.UNICAMP.BR or
INFOMED@BRUC.BITNET:

ACCESSING DATABASES OF THE
NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE THROUGH ELECTRONIC
MAIL - BITNIS
During the I Regional Congress on Health Sciences Information
held on October 1992 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Pan American
Health InfoCom Network News Page 53
Volume 6, Number 4 February 28, 1993
Health Organization, Regional Office of the World Health
Organization officially launched BITNIS (Batch BITNET/Internet
to NLM Intercommunication Service), for Latin American and
Caribbean Countries.
BITNIS it is a new mechanism for accessing all databases of
the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Bethesda, Maryland.
This method involves use of GRATEFUL MED, BITNET, internet,
UUCP, FIDONET, and a software called SMED.
BITNIS was developed by Dr. Andres Stutzin and Victor Cid of
the University of Chile, in collaboration with the National
Library of Medicine and the Pan American Health Organization.
BITNIS uses GRATEFUL MED (GM) to generate the desired
bibliographic search. GM is a user-friendly software program
that run on an IBM- XT, AT or other compatible computer and
that permits a user without experience to do a bibliographic
search of the Medical Library Analysis and Retrieval System
(MEDLARS) of the NLM.
GM allows formulation and modification of a search strategy
before sending via BITNET, internet, UUNET, etc. The search
strategy is formatted by SMED and then that "file" is sending
by electronic mail through any network to NLM internet node.
The BITNIS gateway captures the message and converts it for
processing by the NLM computer. The results of the search
then are returned by the NLM computer to the gateway where the
file is converted for transmission via computer network to the
recipient's PC. Is the file the same as used for the GM Search
Engine (Appendix G of the GM Instruction Manual)? Are the
commands the same as given in the "Basics of Searching
Medline" PB 89-146179?
BIREME (Latin American and Caribbean Center for Health
Sciences Information), will be the coordinator for
distribution of BITNIS passwords through its network. BITNIS
will is available to the scientific and academic community on
credit accounts bases.
Requirements
1. IBM PC (XT, AT) compatible.
2. Access to BITNET, internet, UUNET, econet, peacenet.

Although GOPHER is a relative newcomer to the internet, the health
resources it points to are vast. The best way to learn about GOPHER
and what it has to offer is to log onto one and go exploring. I'll
be covering these resources in future updates. Here's one everyone
will be interested in and a good place to begin 'tunneling. For
more information on Gopher and its protocols, connect to the
University of Minnesota gopher server at gopher.micro.umn.edu, port

CAMIS has a national responsibility to disseminate and further
the state of medical computing in much the same way that its
predecessor, SUMEX-AIM (host of the Info-Mac archives*), did.
The CAMIS gopher features much of the usual and the following:
o technical report abstracts from the last 10 years from
the Knowledge Systems Laboratory (which includes the
Section on Medical Informatics and the Heuristic
Programming Project)
o an extensive collection of Mac documentation (including
Word5, Canvas and other applications)
Health InfoCom Network News Page 56
Volume 6, Number 4 February 28, 1993
o a search test directory, originally designed for testing
the NeXT's Digital Librarian indexing) that now can be
used to test the searching capabilities of Don Gilbert's
WAIS enhancements (in the About the CAMIS Gopher
directory). It's simple, but especially useful for
novices like myself to figure out what you will get with
a particular search on a small, well-defined database.

BRIDGE
Welcome to the online public access catalogue. The PALS-based
catalogue provides access to the collections of two
institutions so users should note the system prompt to
determine which institution they are searching.
If you are using the system for the first time, type: HELP
If you wish to search both libraries in the system, type:
HELP SY
If you are using this system from outside a library, remember
that to leave and return to the campus network, you must type:
$$SOFF
PALS INSTRUCTIONS: Searching Other Libraries
The online public access catalogue contains bibliographic
records from the following two libraries:
SBH -- St. Boniface General Hospital Libraries
UML -- University of Manitoba Libraries
The collection sizes for each library can be displayed by
typing SIZE.
By default, all of your searches will be run against one
library. However, you may also search either "the other"
library or both of them together by using a location symbol
immediately after your command name. For example:
Health InfoCom Network News Page 62
Volume 6, Number 4 February 28, 1993
AU SBH MILLER BENJAMIN FRANK
CO UML GODAVARI HAZARDOUS
TI SYS DENTISTRY AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY
The symbol SYS will search both the SBH and UML collections.
If you wish to search extensively in another library, you may
also change the default through the use of the SET LIB
command. For instructions on this command, type HELP SZ.
UML=>help sz
PALS INSTRUCTIONS: Changing The Default Library
Normally, all of your searches will be processed against one
default library, either SBH (St. Boniface General Hospital
Libraries) or UML (University of Manitoba Libraries). You
also have the option of searching either the other library or
both of them together by inserting the location symbol
immediately after your command name. The symbol for both is
SYS. For example:
AU SBH MILLER BENJAMIN FRANK
CO UML GODAVARI HAZARDOUS
TI SYS DENTISTRY AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY
If you wish to search extensively in another library, you may
temporarily change your search default with the LIB command.
For example:
SET LIB UML
SET LIB SBH
SET LIB SYS
When you use the SET LIB command, your system prompt will
change to reflect the new search default. Following a period
of inactivity, the system will return the search default for
your terminal to its original setting and the prompt will
revert back to normal.
