  11. MILLBURY - FBI agents yesterday raided the home of Richard Kenadek, 46 South 
  12. Oxford St., owner of a company that had alledgely been illegally distributing
  13. copyrighted computer software programs, according to a software trade group.
  14.      The Software Publishers Association said the FBI raided the Davy Jones
  15. Locker, "a sophisticated computer bulletin board with paying subscribers in
  16. 36 states and 11 foreign countries."
  17.      FBI spokesman William McMullin confirmed agents executed a search 
  18. warrant in Millbury but declined to elaborate. McMullin said no charges had
  19. been filed.

  21. COMPUTER BULLETIN BOARDS

  23.      According to the software association, a computer bulletin board allows
  24. "personal computer users to access a host computer by a modem equipped
  25. telephone and to exchange information including messages, files and computer
  26. programs. THE SYSTEM OPERATOR IS GENERALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR MATERIALS POSTED
  27. TO THE BULLETIN BOARD."
  28.      For a fee of $49 for three months or $99 for one year, "subscribers to
  29. Davy Jones Locker were given access to a special section of the bulletin
  30. board that contained copies of more than 200 copyrighted programs including
  31. popular business and entertainment packages. Subscribers could download
  32. or recieve these programs for use on their own computers without having to 
  33. pay the copyright owner anything for them," according to the association.
  34.      A spokesman for the association estimated that more than $675,000 worth
  35. of software was distributed.
  36.      Meanwhile, telephone calls to Kenadek's home and the Davy Jones Locker's 
  37. modem recieved a busy signal yesterday.
  38.      No one was at Kenadek's split level ranch home last night, but at about
  39. 8:45 p.m. a woman who identified herself as Kenedek's wife drove into the 
  40. driveway.
  41.      She said she was just arriving from work and had no knowledge of what
  42. has happened yesterday. She said she had not heard from her husband all day.

  44. ANTENNA, DISK ON ROOF

  46.      The home, located in a rural section of town, had a large antenna and
  47. disk on its roof. There is also a large antenna on an adjacent building and
  48. a large antenna in the back yard.
  49.      Neighbors, who asked not to be identified, said that Kenadek would be
  50. out at night working on the antennas. One woman said, "I wondered if he might
  51. be a spy."
  52.      She said that "there were a lot of men in suits at the house at 7" in
  53. the morning yesterday. They were still there at 9 a.m. when she left her
  54. home, she said.
  55.      Her husband said he saw Kenadek around lunchtime yesterday. He said 
  56. Kenadek seemed like a nice guy and that he though Kenadek fixed televisions
  57. and radios.

  59. GOVERNMENT SEES TREND
  60.      Ilene Rosenthal, director of litigation for the Software Publishers
  61. Association, said, "This is one of the first instances that we are aware of
  62. where the FBI has shut down a private bulletin board for distributing
  63. copyrighted software. IT CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES A TREND THAT THE GOVERNMENT
  64. IS RECOGNZING THE SERIOUSNESS OF SOFTWARE COPYRIGHT VIOLATION."
  65.      According to Software, the business programs offered by Davy Jones
  66. Locker were from a variety of well-known software companies including 
  67. AutoDesk, Borland, International, Central Point System, Clarion Software,
  68. Fifth Generation, Fox Software, IBM, Intuit, Lotus Developement, Micrografx,
  69. Microsoft, Software Publishing Corp., Symantec, Ventura Software, Wordperfect,
  70. and X-True Co. Entertainment programs included Flight Simulator by Microsoft
  71. and Leisuresuit Larry by Sierra.

  77. MY 2 CENTS WORTH: SYSOPS beware of whats on your boards... You can bet that
  78. all the above software vendors will have a field day with this guy. Get the
  79. copyrighted stuff off your boards. I wouldn't want the FBI in my house
  80. preparing me to become the next sacraficial lamb.
  81. USERS beware of what you download. I hope this guy didn't keep detailed 
  82. records of who downloaded what. Thats a list I wouldn't want to be on!
