What are their charters?ππNAME: rec.games.frp.advocacyπCHARTER: Frequently discussion on rec.games.frp amounts to vigorouslyπ overstated disagreement about the quality or lack thereof ofπ a particular game system or game company. This unmoderatedπ discussion newsgroup will give readers of the rec.games.frpπ hierarchy an outlet for such material. This newsgroup wouldπ be expected to hold such lines of discussion as: Championsπ versus GURPS; AD&Dv1 versus AD&Dv2; AD&D stinks; classπ systems versus skill based systems; game critiques wanted;π mine are bigger than yours; and so on.ππNAME: rec.games.frp.announce (Moderated)πMODERATOR: Coyt Watters <rg-frp-announce@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu>π backup by Joshua Levy <joshua@veritas.com>πCHARTER: This group is intended for all announcements relating toπ roleplaying games. This may include, but is not limited to,π game release announcements, pbem announcements, conventionπ announcements, and any other events. Discussion of materialπ in this newsgroup should be done in the appropriateπ roleplaying discussion group. Please direct followup lines asπ appropriate.ππNAME: rec.games.frp.archives (Moderated)πMODERATOR: Mitch Gold <frp-archives@rpi.edu>π backup by Steve Mansfield <smm@uunet.uu.net>πCHARTER: This newsgroup will serve as a temporary archive for postingsπ that should be archived on one of the anonymous ftp orπ mail-server sites, and which do not belong in one of theπ other roleplaying newsgroups. Therefore only finished workπ such as net.books, campaign background, convention modules,π the tabolport project, fiction, poetry, compilations, and soπ on should be posted here. This newsgroup is not forπ discussion purposes, and discussion of anything in thisπ newsgroup should take place in the appropriate roleplayingπ discussion group. Please direct followup lines appropriately.ππNAME: rec.games.frp.cyberπCHARTER: This moderated newsgroup is for the discussion of Cyberpunk π specific topics. This group replaces the moderated groupπ rec.games.cyber. Topics of a General Interest should be π directed to rec.games.frp.misc.ππNAME: rec.games.frp.dndπCHARTER: This unmoderated discussion newsgroup is for discussion ofπ the official rules and settings of the D&D family ofπ roleplaying games, produced by TSR, Inc., includingπ Collector's Edition Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), Basic D&D,π Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D), and AD&D Secondπ Edition. This proposed newsgroup would include discussion ofπ TSR's rules and products and compatible products, such as:π character classes; character races; monsters; magic spells;π weapons; Greyhawk; the Forgotten Realms; the Known World;π Dark Sun; Spelljammer; RavenLoft; Hollow World; City State ofπ the Invincible Overlord; and so on. Crossposting between thisπ group and other groups in the rec.games.frp hierarchy isπ discouraged, however issues of general interest that happenπ to involve a D&D rulebook or setting are more than welcome.ππNAME: rec.games.frp.marketplaceπCHARTER: This unmoderated newsgroup is intended to hold For Sale andπ Wanted postings for roleplaying game materials.ππNAME: rec.games.frp.miscπCHARTER: This is a discussion group for all aspects of roleplayingπ games which are not subsumed within another rec.games.frp.*π newsgroup. It fully replaces rec.games.frp within theπ roleplaying newsgroup hierarchy. The acronym "frp" refers toπ Fantasy Role-Playing, but this does not mean that the scopeπ of the group is restricted to pseudo medieval settings whereπ magic is common and powerful. The common misuse of the wordπ "fantasy" comes from the marketing distinction between theπ literary genres of science fiction and fantasy. Fantasyπ actually means anything that is set in a time or place thatπ is **in some essential way** unlike our own. Science Fictionπ fits this definition of fantasy, as do other genres includingπ Horror, Tolkeinesque High Fantasy, and Westerns. Lines ofπ discussion in this newsgroup can be expected to include,π among other topics: roleplaying advice; gamemastering advice;π reviews of roleplaying products; scenario ideas; rules;π errata; gaming anecdotes; and many peripherally connectedπ subjects. Crossposting between this group and otherπ roleplaying discussion groups is to be discouraged.ππIn addition, there are a few groups which, while not part of the actualπhierarchy of rec.games.frp.*, are close cousins of the core groups:ππ alt.games.frp.live-action is an alternative group (and thus hasπ a more restricted distribution than the core groups) for theπ discussion of issues related specifically to live action π roleplay. Discussion of live action is also welcome on theπ .misc group.ππ rec.games.design is a "multicultural" group which is used to π discuss issues of game design. This group is visited by π designers of both computer and traditional games. FUDGE (q.v.)π was designed, in part, on this newsgroup.ππ2: How do I get hold of a copy of the Net.<whatever>.Book?ππA: First off, thanks for reading the administrative articles beforeπ posting. One of the administrative articles is entitledπ "Net.*.Books" and contains details of how to get at the Netπ Books, suprisingly enough. Please check in there before posting aπ request to rec.games.frp.misc.πππ3: What is the address for the <whatever> mailing list?ππA: Once again you'll find the answer in another of theπ administrative articles, in this case the two part "FRP Mailingπ Lists and Digests" posting. If the answer isn't in there, goπ ahead and ask the net at large - if you get results, please letπ us know so we can update the postings.πππ4: How do I access the <whoever> Games BBS?ππA: First off, look in the "BBS's of interest to gamers" posting,π where a number of games companies' BBS's are listed.πππ5: Are there any clubs for roleplayers besides the one run by TSR, Inc?ππA: Yes. There are several. The National Association for theπ Advancement of Role Playing (NAARP) is nominally an associationπ for the USA only, but accepts members from other countries.π CARpg, which is associated with the NAARP, is the Committee forπ the Advancement of Roleplaying games, and is a strong pro-gamingπ voice in the fight against BADD and other groups that think thatπ roleplaying is evil. The following is some info for the NAARP.ππ The National Association for the Advancement of Role-Playing, Incπ is a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting theπ hobby of role-playing. NAARP provides its members with an annualπ membership directory, so game players can contact each other.π NAARP publishes a quarterly newsletter featuring information onπ upcoming releases from the industry, and news about conventions.π NAARP is also dedicated to educating the public about the hobbyπ through tournaments and public discussions.ππ If you'd like a membership form and more information, send anπ SASE toππ NAARP, Incπ P.O.Box 2752π Chapel Hill, NC 27515-2752ππ or if you have specific questions E-Mail toππ USENET chatham!rcarden@duke.cs.duke.eduππ WWIV Net 94@9955πππ6: Does anybody know what E. Gary Gygax is doing these days?ππA: As of May 17, 1992 EGG has completed a multi-genre fantasyπ roleplaying game for Game Designer's Workshop to be calledπ Dangerous Dimensions. June 5: The name was changed to Dangerousπ Journeys, rumors were that TSR had some problems with the "D&D"π abbreviation. It has been released and is now on the market.ππ7: Does anybody know what Steve Perrin/Luise Perenne/Chaosium are doingπ these days?ππA: Gossip follows:ππ Call of Cthulhu is still their best selling game. Avalon Hill hasπ a new editor for RuneQuest, Ken Rolston, who is planning onπ publishing several *quality* supplements in 1992.ππ As of summer '91, Chaosium saw a reorg in its managementπ structure. The nomenclature now conforms to present day businessπ conventions. Lynn Willis is now CEO of the company, with Gregπ Stafford stepping back as President, now working under the titleπ of Chief of Design. Charlie Krank is now manager of marketingπ and sales.ππ Yes, the two are man and wife, but still, her name is Perenne.ππ Steve Perrin left Chaosium after the failure of SuperWorld to beπ able to work for different companies on a free-lance basis. He'sπ done some stuff for TSR (Such as the Lankhmar products), and youπ may find his name on products from other companies. He's alsoπ rumored to have done some teevee writing (kidvid), and now to beπ working in the computer game industry. He may have done work forπ Spectrum Holobyte. He is still involved with gaming (though hisπ company contract prohibited him from doing any professional workπ in it) and is part of the con committee for DunDraCon every year.ππ Ran into Steve and Luis Perrin at the Oak, Ash, and Thorn concertπ at Freight and Salvage a few weeks ago. They're old friends ofπ my wife from her early SCA days. If I remember right, Steve saidπ he was writing material for a computer games company and Luis wasπ doing some sort of commercial art. But I may not have that rightπ in detail...ππ Well, when I'm in the SF Bay Area, I game with Steve Perrin andπ his "friday night gaming crew". They mostly play Champions; theπ group is pretty much "all GM's" at this point, so they rotateπ Game Mastering every couple of weeks. About half the DunDraConπ committee is in the gaming group, I'd estimate.ππ scoops are from:π henkl@Holland.Sun.COM (Henk Langeveld)π Wayne.Shaw@f315.n103.z1.fidonet.org (Wayne Shaw)π Nicolai.Shapero@f524.n102.z1.fidonet.org (Nicolai Shapero)π Ed Allen allen@enzyme.berkeley.eduπ Donald Tsang tsang@june.cs.washington.eduπππ8: What is Fluff?ππA: Fluff is the polite net.word for stories based on roleplayingπ campaigns. Net roleplayers are violently divided on the qualityπ and utility of stories on the network. If you post your storiesπ to rec.games.frp.misc please put STORY: at the beginning of theπ subject line so that those who hate fluff can avoid it and thoseπ who love it can find it, and use a consistent title so that thoseπ who like or dislike your stories can identify them quickly.ππ9: What is this rec.games.rpg newsgroup I keep seeing mentioned?ππA: rec.games.rpg is a defunct newsgroup that was created (amongstπ some controversy) a few years ago and then promptly deleted fromπ most of the news sites in the world. However, some sites stillπ carry it. It only propagates to 20% or so of the net.world. Ifπ you want to discuss roleplaying games but are not interested inπ the "fantasy" genre your best bet is to participate onπ rec.games.frp.misc instead of trying to use rec.games.rpg, whichπ reaches only a fraction of the readership of the official groups.ππ10: What's a Cthulhu?ππA: H.P.Lovecraft wrote a number of scary science fiction storiesπ in the early twentieth century. These stories, along with othersπ written in conscious imitation of Lovecraft by like mindedπ writers, have come to be known as the "Cthulhu Mythos" ofπ stories after Cthulhu, who is an awful, terrible being from theπ stars who sleeps in his temple in a sunken island much likeπ Atlantis in the seas of the Earth.ππ11: I want to sell some of my old game stuff. How should I go about it?ππA11: Post to rec.games.frp.marketplace. There are several things thatπ you should do if you are selling items through news: (1)π describe each item you have for sale, including complete,π accurate name and publication information (2) if you have firmπ prices or minimum bids for items, put them in your posting. (3)π supply a valid internet return address.ππ12: What is Munchkinism? What does the Wizard of Oz have to do withπ roleplaying games?ππA12: Munchkinism is similar to "Monty Haul" gaming; however it involvesπ playing at incredible power levels purely for the sake ofπ watching the terrain get blown away by player characters whoπ are unstoppable. Munchkinism also involves "rules rape," wherein π players milk every advantage out of the rules. Often a munchkin π will carry a favorite character from game to game, usually with π the maximum allowable ability scores, skill ratings, etc - and π enough hardware/magic to destroy the planet four times over.ππ13: I've run out of adventure ideas for my game. Does anybody have ideasπ for new plots?ππA13: There are only so many times you can use the same plot patternπ before it grows tiresome. So use different plot patterns.ππ This is condensed from Georges Polti's _The 36 Dramatic Plots_.ππ Each short plot description starts with the title of the plotπ pattern. After a hyphen the main characters to be found in theπ plot are given, separated by commas.ππ Supplication - Persecutor, Suppliant, a Power in Authorityπ Deliverance - Unfortunates, Threatener, Rescuerπ Revenge - Avenger, Criminalπ Vengeance by Family upon Family - Avenging Kinsman, Guiltyπ Kinsman, Relativeπ Pursuit - Fugitive from Punishment, Pursuerπ Victim of Cruelty or Misfortune - Unfortunates, Master or Unluckyπ Personπ Disaster - Vanquished Power, Victorious Power or Messengerπ Revolt - Tyrant, Conspirator(s)π Daring Enterprise - Bold Leader, Goal, Adversaryπ Abduction - Abductor, Abducted, Guardianπ Enigma - Interrogator, Seeker, Problemπ Obtaining - Two or more Opposing Parties, Object, maybe anπ Arbitratorπ Familial Hatred - Two Family Members who hate each otherπ Familial Rivalry - Preferred Kinsman, Rejected Kinsman, Objectπ Murderous Adultery - Two Adulterers, the Betrayedπ Madness - Madman, Victimπ Fatal Imprudence - Imprudent person, Victim or lost objectπ Involuntary Crimes of Love - Lover, Beloved, Revealerπ Kinsman Kills Unrecognized Kinsman - Killer, Unrecognized Victim,π Revealerπ Self Sacrifice for an Ideal - Hero, Ideal, Person or Thingπ Sacrificedπ Self Sacrifice for Kindred - Hero, Kinsman, Person or Thingπ Sacrificedπ All Sacrificed for Passion - Lover, Object of Passion, Person orπ Thing Sacrificedπ Sacrifice of Loved Ones - Hero, Beloved Victim, Need forπ Sacrificeπ Rivalry Between Superior and Inferior - Superior, Inferior,π Objectπ Adultery - Deceived Spouse, Two Adulterersπ Crimes of Love - Lover, Beloved, theme of Dissolutionπ Discovery of Dishonor of a Loved One - Discoverer, Guilty Oneπ Obstacles to Love - Two Lovers, Obstacleπ An Enemy Loved - Beloved Enemy, Lover, Haterπ Ambition - An Ambitious Person, Coveted Thing, Adversaryπ Conflict with a God - Mortal, Immortalπ Mistaken Jealousy - Jealous One, Object of Jealousy, Supposedπ Accomplice, Author of Mistakeπ Faulty Judgement - Mistaken One, Victim of Mistake, Author ofπ Mistake, Guilty Personπ Remorse - Culprit, Victim, Interrogatorπ Recovery of a Lost One - Seeker, One Foundπ Loss of Loved Ones - Kinsman Slain, Kinsman Witness, Executionerππ14: What game magazines are out there?ππA14: Here is a limited list. Where is it?ππA15: When Dave Hargrave passed away the rights to the Arduin lineπ were split between two companies. The two companies' addressesπ are as follows:ππ Dragon Tree Pressπ 118 Sayles Blvdπ Abilene, TX 79605ππ Has rights to Arduin Grimoires IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII (or 5-8)ππ Grimoire Gamesπ POB 4363π Berkeley, CA 94704ππ Has rights to the original Arduin Trilogy, and the Arduinπ Adventure, which turns Arduin from a D&D supplement (WHICH ITπ REALLY IS, down to reproducing the typos in the original D&Dπ monster listings) to a free-standing game.πππ16: What (or who) is Monty Haul?π πA16: Monty Hall was the host of an American game show calledπ _Let's Make a Deal_, which was on in the 60s and 70s. Peopleπ would dress up in stupid costumes and come onto the showπ and Monty would hand them money then talk them into tradingπ it for whatever's behind curtain number one, number two, or π number three, or you can keep the money, or you can take thisπ box right here. He would keep on getting them to trade, someπ times letting them see what they had so far and sometimes not,π until they declined to trade any more. Sometimes they wouldπ win a car, a hawaiian vacation, an airstream mobile home, andπ other times they would win a goat, a bucket of rubber monkeys,π or a year's supply of automotive wax. The prizes were random,π sometimes good, sometimes bad. Gary Gygax dubbed a style ofπ play of D&D where the gamemaster hides treasures behind someπ doors and monsters behind others Monty Haul style, punningπ on the game show's host.ππ17: I want a group dedicated to my favorite game, how do I do it?*ππA17a: The simple answer is not to do it at all, you'll save yourself a lotπ of grief and pain if you learn to use a KILLFILE to limit the volumeπ of information you receive. The current hierarchy was forged after aπ long discussion and massive flaming. If you insist on trying, pleaseπ read the guidelines for group creation over on news.answers. In aπ nutshell, you have to start a request for discussion on news.groups,π which must be at least two weeks long. In the rec.games.frp.* is wasπ considerably longer, because of all the bugs which were ironed out. π After getting an acceptable charter and namespace figured out, thenπ a VOTE must be run. This vote has to meet certain criteria toπ fulfill the guidelines for group creation. If, and only when theπ vote is considered VALID, i.e. there are no legitimate complaintsπ about the voting, the new group is created. ALT groups are easier toπ start, because there is no network control over ALT groups, howeverπ ALT is only carried on about 10% of the net.ππA17b: Check the fourth and fifth parts of this informational bulletin,π ROLEPLAYING MAILING LISTS AND DIGESTS, there is a good chance theπ system you want to discuss already has a mailing list dedicated toπ it. Mailing lists send the postings directly to your mailer, π rather than reading them through netnets.ππ18: What's the Facts on ICE and bankruptcy? *ππA18: John Nephew jnephew@carleton.edu:π Someone raised the question of ICE's solvency. I asked Bruce Harlickπ of Hero Games (BruceHH@aol.com) about these rumors, and he responded:ππ >ICE is NOT in Chapter 7, Chapter 11, or Chapter 13. They were in aπ >voluntary-type of receivership, but it wasn't a formal one. They areπ >out of that now. They are even starting to pay off their back authorπ >debt! Or so I've heard. ICE should be in fine financial shape.ππ So that should settle the rumors. :)ππ19: What is FUDGE? Where do I get it?ππA19: Here's an extraction from:π "FUDGE Frequently Asked Questions, (answers by Steffan O'Sullivan):"ππQ1. What is FUDGE?π===================πA1. FUDGE is a free role-playing game (face-to-face table gaming, thatπ is - not a computer game or Live Roleplaying Game). It is just aπ gaming "engine" - each GM must provide the "body" of the RPG inπ order to make it work. A certain amount of customization work isπ necessary in order to use FUDGE, and many things are leftπ unstated: the GM will have to fudge a lot.ππ However, it provides a simple, word-based mechanism for creatingπ characters and resolving actions that is very easy to use inπ almost any given situation.ππ FUDGE stands for:π Freeform (simple, laid-back, not rules-heavy. Customizable toπ taste.)π Universal (usable with any genre.)π Donated (it costs nothing, and may be reproduced and given toπ players legally.)π Gaming (role-playing gaming, that is.)π Engine (it's just the basic mechanism for character creationπ and development, as well as action resolution. Noπ world details are provided.)ππ FUDGE was written by, and is copyright by, Steffan O'Sullivan.π Much valuable aid was received from many people onπ rec.games.design, most of whom are credited in the actual FUDGEπ manuscript.ππQ2. Who is the target audience?π================================πA2. FUDGE is for experienced GMs, though it can be used with noviceπ players. You must enjoy making decisions on the fly in order toπ run FUDGE. It's also not for those who want extreme detail. Youπ must enjoy either creating or adapting your own world background,π as none is provided (but sample characters from a number of genresπ are included).ππQ4. Where can I get it?π========================πA4. FUDGE is available via anonymous ftp from:ππ Site: oz.plymouth.eduπ Directory: pub/fudgeππ It is in a single, compressed, tarred file called fudge.tar.Z.ππ Ask your sys admin if you don't know how to ftp or extract filesπ from a tarred, compressed file.ππ Basically, after you get the file via ftp (be sure to enter "binary"π before getting the file), you first uncompress it then untar it:π uncompress fudge.tar.Zπ tar xf fudge.tarππQ5. Can I contribute?π======================πA5. Yes, you can. I am acting as "editor" (or "filter" if you prefer)π for suggestions and feedback. This is very subjective, however,π so don't be offended if your suggestions don't make it into theπ main text. My main criteria for including rules are simplicityπ and necessity. At this point, new suggestions won't make it inπ the main text for a few months, at best.ππ It is easier to contribute to the Addenda that is attached toπ FUDGE. I still filter things, but am more tolerant. Simply writeπ a clear, concise rules addition, in ASCII, using existing Addendaπ sections as guidelines. E-mail any submissions to:π sos@oz.plymouth.edu.ππ (MS-DOS ASCII or XyWrite format submissions may be sent to:π Steffan O'Sullivan, P.O. Box 465, Plymouth, NH 03264 USA.)πππ
