-Pacific Edge Magazine- Readme File
****************************************************************************
****************************************************************************
Minimum requirements to run -Pacific Edge-:
■ An MS-DOS compatible personal computer
■ MS-DOS version 2.1 or greater
■ One floppy drive or one hard disk (A hard disk is strongly
recommended, even though -Pacific Edge- is small)
■ Any standard monochrome or color monitor
■ 384K of RAM (although it needs only 58K by itself, this is our
recommendation to allow for other programs)
Running -Pacific Edge- is simple. Just enter:
EDGEyymm
Where yy=year and mm=month (For example, the May/June 1993 issue is
named EDGE9305.EXE). The magazine is in the form of a DOS .EXE file,
so it will run with just that one instruction.
All other modules that EDGE needs to run are also .EXE files that it
calls up automatically.
Along with EDGEyymm.EXE, you should also find the following files:
README!.NOW This text/help file
LICENSE.TXT -Pacific Edge-'s License
SUBFORM.TXT A form with which to subscribe
WHYSUB.TXT A rationale for you to subscribe
FILE_ID.DIZ A brief file for BBS use
****************************************************************************
-Pacific Edge- is written with HyperHelper, an excellent hypertext
authoring package for DOS (see our review in our January/February 1993
issue).
There are some known incompatibilities that are listed in HyperHelper's
own readme file. The rest of this file is clipped from that one. When
the text refers to either "HyperHelper" or "the browser", you may assume
it also refers to the EDGEyymm.EXE file. When it refers to an "option",
it means a command line switch to be used when calling up the program,
for example, EDGE9305 -xh, is a use of the -xh option.
LAPTOP USERS: You should be aware of the -m option, which allows you to
force the magazine to mono attributes. Just type EDGE9305 -m, for
example, to use this option.

*** IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING! ***
*********************************************
IF THE BROWSER LOCKS UP ON YOU, read below for
some possible reasons:
I. Your computer is non-standard in some way in the upper
memory area (between 640K-1MB), and causes HyperHelper's
automatic scan of this area to lock up.
Solution: Try using the -xh option, which will prevent HyperHelper
from scanning the upper memory area. If you use this option,
then you may NOT load HyperHelper into the upper memory area
using the DOS loadhigh command.
II. If you are using QEMM 6.0 or NetWare, and use the -lim option,
the browser may lock up. Try using the new -limc option,
(which moves code but not data, see V3.03a notes), which has
been known to clear up problems with QEMM and NetWare.
III. Your mouse driver is old, or is not a true Microsoft
compatible driver.
Solution: Try using the -mo- option which disables the use of
the mouse in the browser. (Notice the dash before AND after "mo".)
If this clears up the problem, then either use this option all the
time, or try to update to the latest mouse driver you can.
MOUSE DRIVERS:
If you have a Logitech mouse with an old driver (pre-V5.0),
the mouse action will not work properly in HyperHelper.
Update to V5.0 or higher of the driver to correct the problem.
Also, the browser will lock up if you are using a TrueMouse
driver, (purportedly supplied by Northgate.) Even though this
driver is supposed to be 100% Microsoft compatible, it
apparently isn't! The same symptoms occur with some Mouse System
mouse drivers.
Try to use the latest mouse driver you can, and if at all
possible, use a true Microsoft mouse driver.
