PRESS RELEASE
Ron Albright Contact: Ron Albright
Disktop Publishing Association 1-205-853-8269 (Voice)

Birmingham, AL 35215 1-205-854-1660 (BBS)
NEW ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCED TO PROMOTE ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING
BIRMINGHAM, AL: The "Disktop Publisher's Association" ("DPA") is
an association for parties of all levels who share interest in
the dissimination of information in electronic ("computer
readable") format. Those eligible for membership include authors,
publishers, and consumers of on-disk publishing.
"Electronic publishing," in its broadest sense, shall mean the
authorship and production for general consumer access of any
materials which are primarily read by computer and viewed on
"paperless," "digital," and "on-disk" publishing - includes
fiction and nonfiction works that are stored and distributed on
disk or available by modem access on "bulletin board systems"
("BBSs").
Electronic publishing, in this sense, specifically does not
include programs (which are sets of instructions used by a
computer to perform other tasks) unless these programs are
designed to facilitate the reading of written materials. Examples
might include hypertext authoring programs or text viewers.
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the DPA includes:
1. To promote, though improved public awareness, the benefits of
electronic publishing. These benefits include availability -
often on a 24 hour a day, on demand basis - of electronic
publications, faster production time, cheaper cost, easier
revision and updating, reduced consumption of natural resources,
and - using appropriate reader software - enhanced presentation
and readability.
2. To provide a forum for discussing the unique challenges of
successfully publishing and marketing disk-based publications.
Examples might include matching an author or publisher with the
appropriate medium for a proposed project. Would hypertext be
best? Plain ASCII? Multimedia?
3. A matching service will be organized to place authors - who
may not be interested in complexities of marketing and publishing
- with publishers who may be willing to assist in these
commercial aspects. "Writers write and publishers publish" is an
axiom that applies to electronic publishing as well as
traditional formats.
4. To share resources for mass marketing electronic publications.
Examples might include sharing of costs of mailing publications
to user groups, etc. DPA will also assist new authors and
publishers in getting press releases circulated and media
coverage. Sharing mailing lists with other publishers is another
possibility open to members.
Membership Requirements
The only requirement for membership shall be an interest in the
advancement of electronic publishing. No fees will be solicited
during the start-up phase.
Interested parties can contact the DPA electronically at:
The DPI BBS - 205-854-1660. Or through electronic mail on
CompuServe (75166,2473), MCI Mail (RALBRIGHT), GEnie (R.Albright)
or through the mail at the above address.

NEWS RELEASE
REJECTION SLIP NOW EXTINCT!
Serendipity Systems of Big Sur, California announced the demise
of the rejection slip. The advent of electronic publishing means
that writers will no longer have to endure receiving rejection
slips from publishers. To herald this development, Serendipity
Systems, the publisher of BOOKS-ON-DISKS (tm) and the distributor
of BOOKWARE (tm) editions, is offering to electronically publish
the next one hundred manuscripts submitted to it. These
manuscripts MUST meet the following criteria:
1) Material must be sent on IBM-PC compatible computer disks
(160K, 180K, 360K, or 720K disks only.)
2) Text files must be in ASCII form.
3) Individual text files must not be larger than 35K with no
more than 12 files per 360K disk, or 24 files per 720K disk.
4) Material must be accompanied by an S.A.S.E. plus a stamped
disk mailer and one blank disk for each disk submitted.
Why are we doing this?
**********************
The number of books available in electronic editions is
limited at the moment. We want to expand the variety and volume
of the works in the electronic library. We will select, from
among the manuscripts sent to us, the best works and offer the
authors our standard 25 percent royalty contract.
The fine print
**************
Authors whose works are selected will be offered a contract
for only the electronic rights to their work; they will retain
all print and other rights and can offer their material to on-
paper publishers. Those works which are not selected for
distribution will be published in an edition of one copy. The
authors of those books will then be able to self-distribute their
work in any manner they choose. We are not a vanity press and
there are no fees or expenses for the authors. This offer to
publish one hundred books is being made solely to introduce
writers to the new electronic publishing market.

Phototypesetting directly from IBM-PC computer disks is now
available from Serendipity Systems. A CompuGraphics
phototypesetter has been linked with a computer running
WORDSTAR 3.3 files. This system yields galley proofs which
can be used as camera-ready copy by printers or can be used
directly in photocopying machines. The output is comparable in
quality to slick magazines and textbooks when printed;
photocopiers will give lower-quality reproductions. (This will
vary depending on the individual machine--typeset masters are
about 1200 dots per inch, whereas photocopied materials are about
300 dots per inch in resolution.)
Three steps are used:
a) Convert files to WordStar 3.3 and convert word processing files
to typesetting files (see sample typesetting file below,)
b) Run files through the typesetter and process the galleys, and
c) Paste up the galleys to the finished copy.
The user can perform steps a) and c) himself to save money, however,
files will have to be inspected for compatibility with both
WordStart and the typesetter.
Fees for this service are:
File conversion: $15 per hour
Typesetting: $20 per hour [about 20K of text per hour]
Pasteup: $15 per hour
NOTE that this system is primarily for text-based documents.
Illustrations, and graphics will be added during the pastup stage.

MAILERS .............................................. Dave Byter
Is the postage needed for mailing your 5.25" disks costing
you more than the disks do? Perhaps I can help. I have found a
source of better mailers. They will ship a disk & cover letter
for two ounces.
Williamsburg Box & Partition Co, 234 N Front St,
Williamsburg OH 45176-1397 Call them at 800/927-2972, and ask
for Dorothy Lewis in customer service. Please tell her that Dave
Byter sent you, so that I get my finder's fee. She will send you
a sample of the 6 by 8 kraft (generic brown) flat mailer.
When you get your sample, put your old Calumet mailer and a
disk on your postage scale and weep. Then put the Williamsburg
mailer and the disk on the scale and rejoice. And now, for the
consumate act, put on another disk, and throw your old mailers
into the trash.
Presently (Mar 91), the minimum order is 300 mailers (2
cases). In the 300 mailer lot, they cost $0.171 each. Plus 25
pounds freight. Larger lot = smaller price, down to $0.114 if
you need many thousands.
