MahJongg
for Windows
by Tony Curro
Back in 1988 or thereabouts, I bought a game called Shanghai. I have
since bought the second incarnation of the game. Neither of these
were made for Windows. This was a commercial product.
Browsing the boards, as I am apt to do, I came across such a
program. MahJongg for Windows, or MJ/WIN, and the author Ron
Balewski refers to it.
MJ/WIN is an entertaining, and often frustrating game. This is most
evident when you have 4 tiles remaining, and the little window pops
up saying "No more moves!" I HATE THAT!! But, it is enjoying
nevertheless, and very addictive.
The program I downloaded came with 10 tile sets. You can order any
or all of 15 disks or more from Ron when registering your program.
There are several options within the game that you can leave on or
turn off. You also have a Hall Of Fame, where all those who
completely clear a board, are forever enshrined. The object is to
finish in the least amount of time for the highest score.
Included also, are three utilities. One allows you to view tile sets
from DOS (or DOS window), another will convert a PCX file, and the
last allows you to create your own tile set. Many of the tile sets
offered have been done by users, and well done I may add.
For the uninitiated, MahJongg is an ancient Chinese game. The object
here is simple, or appears so. You start out with a board of 144
tiles. There are 4 tiles of each variety. By clicking on two free
tiles of the same suit, you remove them from the board. You continue
in this fashion until all available tiles are removed. There is also
an audible sound that emanates from your PC speaker when you have
removed, or clicked on tiles.
I found the file as MJ4WNDWS.ZIP on the BBS.

StarTrek:
The Nth Interation
by Tony Curro
Trek-N is public domain software. If you get the game, and like it,
you should drop the author a line, and tell him so.
It is Stardate 2300.0. The USS Enterprise is on a mission to rescue
Tribbles from a band of Klingons. Along the way, of course, you
encounter wave after wave of enemy ships. Destroy them all, or as
many as you can, rescue as many Tribbles as possible, and return to
the docking station before you run out of fuel. The game has a full
compliment of sounds, from phasers to Tribbles, and even voices. All
come from the PC speaker.
You start with 3 ships, and do not get any more. You pick Dilithium
Crystals along the way that increase your energy. On screen you
have: Long Range Scanners, Phasers, Sensors, Map, Viewer and so on.
Any, and all of these, can be damaged or destroyed when you go into
combat.
The game will allow you to print a final score when you end. The
game is free, but I would like to see a feature that saves high
scores, and one that awards you a ship if you complete a round
without getting destroyed.
I think the author has done a fine job, and maybe after adding the
above, he should start charging for the program.
You need a 286 AT or better, but the program will work on a turbo
XT. VGA is preferred, but MDA will work.
