QmodemPro
by Tony Curro
If you are a Qmodem user, and upgrade to QMPRO, forget almost
everything you know. QmodemPro has a completely new look and feel.
Many of the setup options have been moved. It may overwhelm you at
first, but once you get the feel of it, you will see the changes are
only cosmetic. Underneath the revamping, QMPRO is still the finest
communications program for the DOS environment. Add OLX the off-line
mail reader with spell checker, and you have the best total
communications software package available.
This is Qmodem's 10th anniversary, and they celebrate with a whole
new package. Installation is quick and easy, and requires 2MB of
hard disk space.
Some of the new features in QmodemPro includes:
* pull-down menu interface, as well as a key command structure.
* Includes new off-line mail reader, Off-Line Xpress (OLX) v3.
* Dialing Entry now supports up to 4095 phone entries per
phone book. Unlimited number of phone books.
* QmodemPro now supports "Devices" within the dialing
directory. Each entry can be configured for a specific device from:
modem, LAN modem using INT 14, Class 1 or Class 2 FAXmodem, or a
Netware NASI/NACS Interface.
* Phonebook support for up to 4 alternate phone numbers per
entry. So, if you call a board that has more than one line, you do
not have to have a separate dialing directory entry for each. Just
include the numbers under the alternate entries.
* Phonebook now includes fields to hold UserID, Password,
Memo Field, Key File, Script filename, and Packet name for use by
OLX.
* Phonebook allows you to flag an entry as a "FAX Only"
device. When this item is selected and dialed, QmodemPro will
pop-up a special box for FAX cover sheet information.
Some of the new features of OLX:
* Built-in spell checker
* Cut and Paste between windows, messages, replies and
conferences.
* InBox and OutBox for storing personal inbound and outbound
mail.
* Supports up to 16,000 taglines.
* Redirect Replies to any BBS, CompuServe, MCI or FAX, not
just the system the original message came from.
Select all aspects via pull-down menus, or you can use keyboard
equivalents. Extensive modem configuration file, with support for
hundreds of modems. This file is updated periodically.
QMPro uses a different configuration than previous versions. If you
load a phonebook from an earlier version, QMPro will pop up a dialog
box, asking you to confirm conversion of the old phonebook.
QMPro supports a Host Mode, ANSI music, and all popular protocols.
You can also add external protocols, and QMGate can send/receive
mail from MCI and CompuServe.
Both QmodemPro and OLX have context-sensitive help from almost
anywhere by pressing F1.
Help is also available via BBS, CompuServe, GEnie, America Online,
MSI SupportNET, voice and other technical support. MSI SupportNET
echoes conferences throughout the U.S. and Canada. In addition there
are contact points in: Australia, The Netherlands, France,
Scandinavia, United Kingdom, and Italy.
Overall I was impressed with this new version. It took a bit of
getting used to, but it was worth it.
One thing I would like to see again is the tag option on exit.
Previous versions allowed that all tagged files were left in tagged
state. Upon restarting Qmodem these files would still be tagged. The
current version does not do this. I find it an important feature. I
tag 30 numbers to call. If I do not connect with all, I must
remember those I did not connect with. Previously, I did not have
to. I would also like to see a Windows version. Windows is NOT the
future, but a happening thing today. Most of new software being
released is geared to Windows. Qmodem is sorely missed in that
environment.
