Mauna Kea
Golf Course
by Tony Curro
Aloha, from sunny Hawaii! Palm trees, coconuts, warm breezes,
beautiful beaches, sumptuous luaus. Never mind the review; I am
leaving for this tropical paradise!
Access Software has been hard at work. If you can call spending time
at the beautiful Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and Golf Resort work. It is a
tough job but someone has to do it. Mauna Kea Championship Golf
Course is the first Super VGA course they have released. They will
be releasing several more this year.
To use this course you need, Links 386 Pro, Links, or Microsoft Golf
for Windows. The installation process allows you to choose which
version you wish to install. Choosing the Links 386 Pro version also
updates the program with the most current version(1.08) of the
program.
The scorecard that is included also shows you the layout of the
holes you will encounter on the course.
Looking at this course with the blue skies, clouds, mountains, and
ocean, I don't know if I want to swing the club or admire the
scenery. Access has done that good a job. It is this eye for
excellence that has earned Access 3 awards this year from
ComputerTalk Magazine. They won for Links 386 Pro, MS Golf (which
they designed), and Amazon. Amazon is an adventure game, that I will
be reviewing in a future issue.
The real Mauna Kea has been ranked among "America's 100 Greatest" by
Golf Digest, and Golf magazine has selected it as one of the 12
"Best Golf Resorts in America."
Designed by architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Mauna Kea is one of
the most dramatic and challenging courses he ever designed. It was
built in, 1964 on a 5,000-year-old lava flow, and covers 170 acres.
The third hole at Mauna Kea is one of the most challenging in golf.
This par-3 is shot directly over a surging Pacific inlet. I thought
I would fall into the water. That is how real the shot is.
I mentioned this in my review of Links 386 Pro, and I will state it
again. These courses give you all the joy of golf, without the sun
beating down on you. Add to this the fact that the courses are
getting even better graphically, and you have a dynamic combination.
Even if have never 'teed' off, this will make you enjoy golf. I am
hooked on golf, and I never played it.
Access makes several courses. All of them will work with Links,
Links386 Pro, and MS Golf. They just released Pinehurst, which I be
looking at shortly.
