FaxMe
FaxMe
by Tony Curro
When a product is good you should say its name twice. Practical
Peripherals has introduced an inexpensive answer to those seeking
plain-paper faxes, or those who want an inexpensive fax unit. The
one requirement is a HP Laser Printer, and 1MB of printer memory. It
works with LJ Series II, IID, IIP, III, IIID, and IIP+ printers.
FaxMe, is a cartridge. You plug your phone line into FaxMe, and then
plug FaxMe into your printer's font slot (left one if you have two
slots). Wait for a fax. It is basically that simple. It even comes
with a phone line.
The product does require setting up, which is a simple procedure,
that you follow step-by-step with the manual. All of these options
are accessed by using the control panel on your printer. You set the
Day, Date, Time, number of rings, and so on. All of these changes
remain in effect until they are changed, or until you select RESET
PARAMETERS. They are stored even if the printer is turned off. Of
course in this state you will not receive any faxes. The printer
must remain on at all times to receive faxes.
You can choose resolution, speaker volume, page length, station ID,
intensity, and even Auto Switch Mode. This mode causes FaxMe to
switch from printer mode to receive a fax, and then to switch back
to printer mode. Be advised that any fonts downloaded to the printer
will be lost, and must be downloaded again, before you can use them.
You can manual switch to and from printer and fax mode by pressing
two keys (MENU and +), on your printer.
FaxMe is compatible with all Group III FAX machines. It will receive
FAXes at 9600, 4800, or 2400 bps. Will print information at top or
bottom page that can include date, page and sending phone number.
The phone number even appears in the printer LCD display during
transmission.
You do not have to use special paper with FaxMe. Since it uses your
printer, it prints on the same paper you use all the time. There was
one thing I did not like about FaxMe. That was the inability to send
a fax. FaxMe is a receive only fax unit.
I was very impressed with FaxMe. With a street price of under $200,
it is a solution to those curled pages we have grown to hate. There
are two other features that put FaxMe at the top of my list. One is
its lifetime warranty. This is in effect for ALL their products. The
other is 7-day technical support. They are open from: 6AM-10:30PM
(M-F), and 8AM-3:45PM (S-S). These are Pacific Time. In addition
they have a forum on CompuServe. The product is Made in the USA.
