ABLEnews To Use
Ten Commandments for an Advocate
With a tip of our ABLEnews hat to Deborah Fedor of the National Head
Injury Foundation who posted this on Bill Scarborough's never-dull
Yellow Dream Machine.
1. Thou shalt keep a case file of thine own records in writing,
together, and in a safe place for each agency with which thou hast
dealings.
2. Thou shalt read, know and understand the procedures and rules of
each agency with which thou hast dealings, if necessary/if
available in writing.
3. Thou shalt seek out available legal aid should it be necessary.
4. Thou shalt follow the chain of command until thine problem is
resolved to thine own satisfaction. Hang in there...if the process
is not followed and protocol observed, bureaucrats love to use this
excuse.
5. Shouldst thou persist, strangely the bureaucrats may become
converted and some shalt actually begin to assist thee.
6. Thou shalt file first, then appeal, should thou have a true case
and should thee be denied. If the appeal is also denied, thou hast
the right to a hearing, in most cases. Thou shalt follow up each
possibility to the bitter end.
7. Once thou has made the decision to ask to have a fact-to-face
confrontation, thou shouldst ask for legal aid, if it is available.
8. If thou should go to a hearing stage, thou shoudst have a strong
case, else thee shall fail.
9. Since justice is often slow, case loads are heavy, thou art
responsible for continuing telephone contact. Should thou not
perform this chore, the case may be settled without thee.
10. It is not necessary for thee to fight alone. Supportive
services are available and should be use advantageously. It is a
prime rule that there is strength in numbers, and support shall
see thee through.
[Editor's Note: Personally, I have my doubts about 5 and 10, although
10 is the reason we founded CURE because too many of us have had to
fight alone. Fight or die that's my first commandment as an advocate
and the second is like unto it--love the brothers and sisters you
fight for.]
Yours for More Activism, er Advocacy,
Earl

Hi there,
Right on the money with the decalog. being an activist myself, and having
to deal with the rehab for myself and others, I'll keep that one around,
and if it's ok with you, it'll probably make the rounds some other places.
Thanks.
