System requirements:
AX.25 TNC (not a PC based modem and software ie. BAYCOM ).
PC compatible.
CGA or better monitor ( monochrome OK ).
Fellow ham to play with.
Known bugs:
DO NOT PRESS THE <CTRL> C OR <CTRL><BREAK> keys.
To return your TNC to command mode from chess use the <ALT> C key.
If you see any other shortfalls bugs please contact me.
Getting started:
- Make sure that your TNC is set to
ECHO off
MON off
MYCALL is your call
USERS=1
- Arrange which color you and your opponent will be, frequency and time
to play.
- Run the chess executable by entering chess <port> <speed> <color>
where:
port is a 1 or a 2
speed is 300,1200 or 9600
color is B for black W for white
- You will see that the screen layout has a upper right window showing
what you type the lower shows what is rcvd from the TNC.
- Enter c <opponent> with any digi's required.
- You should now see your TNC anounce that you are connected.
- You may now type like a regular QSO. text will appear in the
xmit and rcv windows. Make sure your opponent is ready (ie.
is running chess and can type at you and vice versa).
- To move a chess piece use the cursor keys and move the frame
to the piece you wish to play. Pick up the man with the
<ESC> key. Move to where you want and press the <ESC> key
again.
- You move will be xmitted to your opponent and reflected on
his screen.
- You may send text at any time just type your message followed
by a return.
- Other keys
<ALT> H - Show help
<ALT> X - Exit from chess
<ALT> R - Resign, notifies opponent and resets both playing boards.
<ALT> M - Monochrome for better vision on monochrome displays.
<ALT> C - Send a <CTL> C to TNC
Future:
No plans to include move/rule checking. Will probably add mouse
support and <CTRL>C checking, better help, move log, game saving,
better startup etc.etc.etc.
It all depends on contributions/input and demand.
