║ Notes About Printers ║
╚══════════════════════╝
We find that a number of our users are not getting all that they might
out of their printers. This document can be used to test whether you are
among those.
Almost all dot matrix printers, as well as all Laser printers we have
encountered, will print the heading on this page surrounded by a solid
double line. Similarly,
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ │
│ This text is surrounded by a single solid line. │

└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Some of our charts and forms are printed using either the single
horizontal line or a double horizontal line. The single vertical line is
used on pedigree charts.
To get these characters, you may have to set one or more "dip" switches,
setting the printer to produce these graphic characters. We are able to
give the proper instructions to laser printers, and to some dot matrix
printers which are controllable by program (such as the Panasonic
printers.) For the rest, you must do the work, as the switches must be
manually set. Your printer manual may identify the desired setup as
"graphics characters" or "IBM graphics"; it should show what alternative
ideograms are associated with codes 179, 196, and 205.
If you do not want to make these settings on your printer, we allow you
to select different characters. In the System Installation, Printer
Installation menu, select your printer. Then use F2 to indicate that you
want to change something. For each of the values you are asked to enter,
press <Enter> until you get to the entry for the vertical line. Enter
the value 124 rather than 179. Similarly enter 45 in place of 196 for
the horizontal line code, and 61 in place of 205 for the double
horizontal line code.
You can see the difference in this box, with a single horizontal line at
the top and a double horizontal line at the bottom.

This may not be a pretty (and we encourage you to set your printer so it
is not necessary), but it is better that seeing something like degree
symbols, italic m's, lines of e with umlauts, or whatever the
alternative is when your printer is not set to the preferred set.
