A GUIDE TO FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGICAL RESOURCES

THE NEW JERSEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY

The Library of the New Jersey Historical Society traces its lineage to the
founding of the Society in 1845. The library collection consistes of some
65,000 volumes, 10,000 pamphlets, approximately 2,000 maps, 1,300 manu-
script groups, 400 periodicals, and newspapers from 97 communities through-
out New Jersey. In addition to an extensive collection of local and state
history, the Library contains many published and manuscript family histor-
ies and genealogies. Some it its special resources and unique collections
are described below.
SPECIAL RESOURCES
NEW JERSEY STATE SOCIETY, DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION LIBRARY
ca. 1,000 volumes
Includes typescripts contributed by chapters on Bible records, vital sta-
tistics, church records, family genealogies, and other sources. Also in-
cludes 300 printed histories and genealogies. Access is provided by a
recently expanded DAR SUBJECT INDEX.
NEW JERSEY BIOGRAPHICAL CARD INDEX
ca. 75,000 cards
Name index of births, marriages, and deaths compiled as a WPA project
primarily from central and northern New Jersey newspapers in the Society's
collection (ca. 1790-1900). Some additional cards largely derived from
Trinity Church, Newark burial records and from the genealogical
compilations of Elmer T. Hutchinson were added in 1958. For additional
information see the first card in the file.
NEW JERSEY FEDERAL CENSUS RECORDS
Microfilm: Contains census statistics for New Jersey from 1820-1880; part
of 1890 (Hudson County); 1900 and 1910.
NEW JERSEY EDUCATION TAX RATABLES
Microfilm: 23 reels
Arranged by county, 1778-1832. Index on first reel.
Originals at New Jersey State Library, Trenton.
Gift of New Jersey State Society, Daughters of the American Colonists,
1960; and the Huguenot Society of New Jersey, 1961.

Information on New Jersey families and some out-of-state families, prin-
cipally New York.
Gift of the New Jersey Historical Society Women's Branch, 1920.
FREEMAN WORTH GARDNER GENEALOGICAL CARD INDEX
Cards: 30,000; notebooks: 29; manuscripts: 180 folders.
Data on northern New Jersey families.
Another extensive C.C. Gardner Collection is located at Rutgers Univer-
sity as part of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey's holdings.
AMERICAN GENEALOGICAL FOUNDATION CARD INDEX

Bibliography of printed genealogies arranged alphabetically, "Abbe" to
"Winchester". The books listed are not necessarily in the collection of
the New Jersey Historical Society.
HOLLAND SOCIETY OF NEW YORK CHURCH RECORDS
Microfilm: 14 reels
Contains Reformed Church records from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsyl-
vania.
Index at reference desk.
Donated in 1959-1960 by the New Jersey Huguenot Society.
INDEX TO CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS' GRAVES IN NEW JERSEY
Cards: 11,000
Provides access to "New Jersey Regiment Infantry Volunteers-U.S. Civil
War: Burial Records by County of the Veterans Who are Buried in the State
of New Jersey" compiled by William Freck. Index by Richard Lum.
GENEALOGY MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS
The SURNAME INDEX TO GENEALOGY MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS provides access to
the Society's unique genealogy manuscript resources. The index, compiled
by the Genealogy Club of the Library, was opened to the public January
1982. The following genealogy collections are included:

FAMILY FILES
The FAMILY FILES are located in the vertical file area. Approximately
1,200 files of miscellaneous umpublished material on New Jersey and related
families.
NOTE: The Library welcomes donations of family papers, originals and
copies. A Family File will be started for members to include typescripts
of research in progress. See Reference Staff.
FAMILY BIBLE RECORDS
Photocopies and typescripts of FAMILY BIBLE RECORDS are open for browsing
in the vertical file area. Approximately 400 files are in this collection.
MANUSCRIPT SOURCES
The Society's MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS contain genealogical groups related to
single families as well as papers that contain data on a number of famil-
ies. It also includes deeds, wills, and other documents and records help-
ful to the genealogical researcher. Cross references to materials in the
Manuscript Collections are included in the Family File.
For access to these sources, consult the Manuscript Card Catalog in the
Manuscript Area. Entries are primarily names of individuals, families and
institutions. See also "Guide to the Manuscript Collections of the New
Jersey Historical Society."
GENEALOGY CHART COLLECTION
"Guide to the Genealogy Chart Collection in NJHS", a 7-page pamphlet,
identifies 60 charts; the index lists 170 allied lines. Copies of the
Guide are available for $3; $4 postpaid. Included is an application for
chart searches by staff. For a fee, staff will search a specific chart
selected by a patron for one or two individuals.
A copy of the Guide is available for use in the Library. Researchers may
search the records without charge.
WEYEL INDEX TO BIRTH & FAMILY RECORDS
CENTERVILLE, BAYONNE: 1884-1917
Birth and family records indexed from the records of Annie Specert Weyel, a
midwife. Approximately 4,000 cards identify child's name, parents' names
and places of birth, mother's maiden name, street address, and number of
children in each family.
SURNAME FILES
Two computer-generated card files maintained as a clearinghouse to assist
researchers in finding others of similar interests. One file is organized
by ancestor name; the other file is a geographical index. Ask the
librarian for help in using the files.
OTHER GENEALOGICAL MATERIALS
In addition to New Jersey materials, the Library contains selected records
and histories for Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island,
Massachussetts, Connecticut, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina
and South Carolina.
The Library also collects family newsletter and genealogical journals.
Among its holdings are: The American Genealogist, National Genealogical
Society Quarterly, New England Historical & Genealogical Register, New York
Genealogical & Biographical Record, Maryland & Delaware Genealogist, Penn-
sylvania Genealogical Magazine, and South Carolina Historical &
Genealogical Magazine.

by Bette Barker, Daniel P. Jones and Karl J. Niederer is now available in
an updated second edition. This is a valuable guide for anyone doing New
Jersey research. It contains information on the state's military records,
divorce records, proprietary deeds, vital statistics, court records and
more! To obtain a copy send a check for $5.00 (made out to New Jersey
