Introduction
-------------
Congratulations, you are about to use one of the best math
tutoring programs on the market today. MathMan Plus (TM).
The registered version of MathMan Plus (TM) is capable of
producing over 544,000 different tests on the four basic
elements of mathematics: Addition, Subtraction,
Multiplication, and Division. Each element has from 4 to 5
different difficulty levels providing the student with a
progression to follow to increase his/her knowledge of
mathematics.
MathMan Plus (TM) does not use fancy graphics or role playing
games to teach mathematics. This is a straight forward
mathematics tutor designed to be used by schools and
educators.
This shareware version will allow you to use only one
difficulty level for each element. This is to let you try
MathMan Plus (TM) to see if this program is right for you.
If you do like it and you would like to have the registered
version of the program, which includes all difficulty levels,
simply print out the order form and send it along with the
registration fee. Use this command to print the order form.
TYPE ORDER.FRM > PRN
Each test that MathMan Plus (TM) creates can vary in length
from 2 to 30 problems. And if you would like, a 20 question
test can be printed out on a standard or laser printer
connected to LPT1:, So the student can work out the problems
on paper before taking the test on the computer. This will
free up computer on time so more students can take advantage
of the program.
But, this is not the true power of MathMan Plus (TM). The
reason why MathMan Plus (TM) is better than all the other
programs on the market today is because for each of the
544,000 tests this program can make, a math tutor can be
initiated to explain to the student step by step how to solve
the problem.
Thanks to a new process called WAFTING, MathMan Plus (TM) has
been able to simulate the same process that the human brain
uses to solve problems in everyday life. In other words,
Artificial Intelligence.
Unlike some other programs that use the same numbers that are
looked up from a table or tutor using the same problems over
and over, MathMan Plus (TM) simply creates numbers from a
random number generator. The internal math tutor doesn't
mind. It will reason out the problem and explain it to the
student step by step every time. What does this mean? It
means that every possible situation that the numbers create
can be explored by the student. There have been too many
times where a student follows several examples in a text book
only to find that one of the problems in an assignment
doesn't even resemble what was studied. MathMan Plus (TM)
eliminates that possibility.
I originally wrote this program for my 11 year old son who
was failing in math. After using the program for two months,
his grades went from straight F's to B's. That was a
significant improvement.

Using MathMan Plus
--------------------------------
MathMan Plus is a very simple program to use. After you have
installed the necessary files on to your hard drive, go to
the directory where the files are (CD\MMP) and type MATHS.
This will start the program. There will be two opening
screens. (Note: On a slow machine i.e. PC-XT 4.77 Meg, the
opening screens are a little slow. Press any key after the
MathMan Plus(TM) screen, the main menu will be displayed.
It will look like this:
Press CAP Lock and select an option
(M) - Start Multiplication Program
(D) - Start Division Program
(A) - Start Addition Program
(S) - Start Subtraction Program
(Q) - Quit
It is important that at this point you press the CAP Lock
button on your keyboard. The program only accepts capital
letters. Once that is done select an option. For our example
press the letter (D). This will start the division program.
The program will now ask you to enter a Test Number. This can
be any number between 1 and 32000. This is an important
number to remember because the same test can be recalled for
future use by using the same test number and skill level
number when starting the program. This is a valuable tool
for teachers.
For our example, type in the number 41 and press ENTER.
On the registered version of MathMan Plus, you will be asked
to enter a skill level number. Typically, this is a number
from 1 to 4 (on the division program it is 1 to 5). This
number will choose the difficulty of the test. It is
important to remember that if you want to recall a test, you
must use BOTH the same test number and skill level number. If
the test is printed, the test number and skill level number
will appear at the top of the page for future reference.
The shareware version of MathMan Plus only allows one skill
level per program. In our example, the skill level set to 3.
Press ENTER to continue.
The computer is now generating a number list to correspond
with the test number and skill level. On a slow machine, this
may take a minute. On a real machine this may be 10 to 15
seconds depending on the difficulty level.
The menu for the division program should now be displayed. It
should look like this:
Press CAP Lock and select an option
(G) - Start Division Program
(P) - Print a 20 Question Worksheet
(H) - Print a 20 Question Worksheet (laser printer)
(Q) - Quit
Now, you have three basic options. Start the program, print a
worksheet or quit. Let's print a worksheet. This can be very
useful. MathMan Plus will print a 20 question worksheet on a
standard or laser printer connected to the first parallel
port on your computer ( LPT1 ).
To print a worksheet:
Press (P) for a standard printer.
Press (H) for a laser printer.
You should now have a copy of the worksheet. Notice at the
top of the page the test and skill numbers. You can give this
worksheet to the student and have them complete the problems.
When they are done you can recall the same test just by
entering the same test and skill numbers. The students can
now check their work by inputing their answers into the
program.
Assuming that you have the menu for the division program
displayed as before, let's start the program. This is done by
typing the letter (G). The program will ask you how many
questions you want. This must be a number LESS than 30.
Because we printed a 20 question worksheet, type in the
number 20 and press ENTER. The display will tell you to
answer the following problems. Press any key to continue.
The first problem will be displayed on the screen. It should
look like this:
_________
1. 10 ) 172
If you worked out the problems on the worksheet, you can type
in your answer to see if it is correct. The answer to this
problem is ( 17 R=2 ). To input this answer into the
program, you need to type in the number 17 and press ENTER.
After you press the ENTER key, the remainder symbol (R=) will
appear. At this time you need to enter the remainder. Type in
the number 2 and press ENTER. The words CORRECT--PRESS RETURN
will appear at the bottom of the screen. RETURN is the same
thing as the ENTER key. Go to the next problem by pressing
ENTER.
The next problem will now be displayed. It should look like
this:
_________
2. 5 ) 98
The answer to this problem is simple. ( 19 R=3 ). But let's
say that you are having a hard time solving this problem. For
example, type in a wrong answer. Type the number 18, press
ENTER. Then, 7 for the remainder and press ENTER. The words
WRONG---TRY AGAIN are now displayed at the bottom of the
screen. Press Enter and the problem will be displayed again.
You now have the option to try another answer or start the
MathMan Plus math tutor. To start the tutor type in the
number 9999 at the answer line of the problem and press
ENTER. The program has now been switched into tutor mode.
Press ENTER again. As you can see, text has appeared at the
bottom of the display describing the different parts of the
division problem. Press ENTER again. The dividend of the
problem has been highlighted. Press ENTER again and again and
again. Now you are walking through the math tutor. Continue
this process until the words "end of tutor" appear. Press
ENTER one more time and the program will leave tutor mode and
return to problem mode. You can now type in the correct
answer as before.
All of the math programs in this package use the same general
approach. All of the math tutors start with the number 9999.
-----------------------
Notes
-----------------------
1. YOU CANNOT LEAVE TUTOR MODE ONCE IT HAS STARTED. YOU MUST
COMPLETE THE TUTOR.
2. YOU CAN STOP THE PROGRAM AT ANY TIME BY PRESSING CTRL-C.
