ZIPKEY UNDER WINDOWS
I have received some success reports for Windows 3. You can access ZIPKEY
from a non-Windows text-mode application running under Windows: to do so, you
must tell the Windows PIF editor that your application is text mode, and that
it should use the full screen.
You can also get the ZIPKEY 2 window to run as a Window within the graphics-
mode desktop! For this, you need Windows running in 386 Enhanced Mode. Click
on the "MS-DOS Prompt" icon, then invoke ZIPKEY 2 just as if you were in
normal DOS (first changing directories if necessary to find the ZIPKEY
program). When you've got the ZIPKEY window, type Alt-Space to shrink the DOS
task to be a part of the graphics desktop. You can then drag on the borders
and use the scroll bars to get the display to cover only ZIPKEY's window if
you wish. There's probably some way to automate all this, but I'm not enough
of a Windows "jock" to know how to do so.
If your application is graphics mode and/or a "For Windows" program, you
will not be able to use ZIPKEY alone to feed its results back to your
application within Windows. But I do have good news: another author has
developed an "add-on" product that you can use with ZIPKEY for such
situations. To quote his literature:
"ZK-Shell is a true Windows application that can access the popular DOS TSR,
ZIPKEY, from within Windows.
"As you type in the state and city, the program immediately starts to display
all of the possible cities. ZK-Shell narrows down the selection until you
select one or finally end up with the last and final selection."
(His literature forgets to mention that you can also type the zipcode to
ZK-Shell, just as you can with ZIPKEY.) Continuing:
"The Paste and Minimize button will pass the city, state, and zip into the
clipboard for insertion into your application.
"Includes macros for attaching to your favorite Windows word processor.
"A DLL is available for programmers that want to add zip code lookups to their
programs (call ZPAY for information on DLL)."
You can get ZK-Shell by sending $20 (plus sales tax if you live in Florida)
plus $5 S+H to
