DSKCAT
**************************************************************
A Ten-Disk Cataloging/Printing Utility
Welcome to my program. The reason I wrote it was that I
couldn't be bothered to look any farther for a program that would
catalog a box of disks, and print out the results on a sheet that you
could stick to your disk box. I KNOW I am not the only one to store my
backups this way, so I decided to release this program.
This is how it works. You run the batch file DSKCAT and it will
load and run DSK.COM. I did it this way because I didn't want to mess
around with printer drivers and stuff, and also because I haven't
figured out printer control in this programming language yet. The
program uses the DOS PRINT program, so be sure you have that program in
your PATH. (I think everybody does, anyway)
To continue, the program will present you with a nice, pretty
one-color screen (still learning that part too), and you will be invited
to press a key. Do so. You will be presented with 3 choices:
1. Make Database
This will step you through inserting and switching all of the
disks that you wish to catalog. If you don't have ten, don't worry, you
can get out by pressing <Space>. The speed of the directory reading
kinda surprised me too!
2. Print Sheet
This actually doesn't print the sheet, but it formats your
printout and writes it to a temporary file, ready for DOS to print it
out. The computer will automatically kick you back into the batch file,
and soon after, into DOS.
*** WARNING *** While the file is printing, DO NOT touch the
keyboard. Any keypress until the file is finished will delete the
temporary file and PRINT will have nothing to read! (You will get a
Half-printout) I deleted the scrap file to keep things neat.
3. Exit
Kicks you back into DOS. (Actually the batch file, so I can
mess up your monitor with my message)
The program is fairly straightforward. If I find any problems,
I will put out a new one, but I haven't found any yet. I would like to
make a few enhancements, but I like it the way it is so far.
As I said, the program is FREEWARE, you are permitted (and
encouraged) to distribute it as widely as you can, but not charge for
it. I am not against shareware, but I don't believe in paying for
inferior products. I'll give those to you free! :)
I'd like to retain the copyright on it, so please don't change
anything. Contact me if you would like something modified, and perhaps
I will have the skill/desire to do it in the next version.
Go and use the program now!
