INTRODUCTION PAGE 1
■───────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Robo-Tape 2.00 is a full featured Tape Door for the
Colorado Memory System's 125 or 250 meg tape drive.
Up to 150 Tape and File or CD Rom areas may be
defined. Each area's access is controllable with
access security levels. I've tried to make Robo Tape
as flexible as possible to allow it almost infinite
configurability. Some of it's features include file
queing and tagging for both the restoring and
downloading of files. Up to 3 files can be added to
the restore and download ques all in one easy step.
Lets say you tagged three files from any of the
available areas and restored them, they would
automatically be added to the download que and ready
for download after the restore process was complete.
File areas can also be designated as upload areas to
allow uploads into them. Robo-Tape uses a generic
FILES.BBS format to control file access, listings,
security, and dupe checking. Due to the highly
flexible ways that Robo Tape handles the FILES.XXX, it
can even be used as a CD Rom or other read only type
medium. Robo Tape will work with any BBS system that
will produce a DORINFO1.DEF, DOOR.SYS, CALLINFO.BBS,
CHAIN.TXT, or SFDOORS.DAT type of door info drop
file. Running under DOS 3.3 or higher and OS/2 2.x.
NOTICE, Functions with a [+] (plus) beside them, are
Registered Only Features. Please read the section on
registering Robo Tape and look at the REGIST.FRM
file for further information.
INSTALLING ROBO TAPE PAGE 2
■────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
To install Robo Tape on your BBS, first make a
directory and unzip all the files from the ROBOT200.ZIP
archive into it. Two very IMPORTANT facts should be
discussed before you go any further. The first is to
make certain the the Colorado Memory Systems Tape
Software DIRECTORY is in your PATH statement of your
autoexec.bat file. Something like PATH C:\TAPE;C:\DOS
would work fine. Also Robo Tape uses DSZ (or GSZ
renamed to DSZ) from Omen Technology to accomplish the
file transfers. Make CERTAIN that DSZ is also in a
directory that is in your PATH statement. Failing to do
the above will result in Robo Tape not functioning
properly. Please make SURE that you have the above
requirements set up properly.
The program ROBOTCFG.EXE is the setup utility you
will use to configure Robo Tape for your system. From the
opening screen hit ALT-F1 to go to the general system
config screen below. This screen is pretty self
explanatory and easy to understand. The top line asks for
the directory in which your tape software resides.

TAPE DIRECTORY PATH, should be pointing to where
your CMS Tape Software is located (TAPE.EXE), remember
this directory also MUST be in your Path statement. You
only need to give the path and not the filename, if you
don't use a trailing back slash, one will be appended.
USE DSZ ON D/U LOADS, if you wish to allow your
users to download or upload from Robo Tape, set this to
Yes. Also be sure that DSZ is in a directory that is in
your PATH statement as well.
[+] WRITE LOG FILE, if this option is set to Yes, Robo
Tape will append info to a definable log file. Robo Tape
will log user's activities such as, entering and exiting,
Restoring, Uploading and Downloading of files.
PATH TO LOG FILE, again you should only put the path
to the log file that will be appended to.
NAME OF LOG FILE, this is the file name of the log
you want Robo Tape to append it's activities to. If this
file does not exist, it will be created.
[+] LIMIT RESTORE HOURS, if you wish to limit the hours
when user's can restore files from the Tape Drive, answer
Yes to this question. My computer is in the bedroom, and
having the tape drive whirling away in the middle of the
night, kinda makes the wife a little upset. :)
TURN RESTORE ON, the time in 24 hour format, when
users will begin having access to the Restore Functions.
TURN RESTORE OFF, the time in 24 hour format, when
you want to disable the Restore Functions.

Use the F2 function key to pop open the Area window.
Highlight the area number you wish to configure and hit
the Enter key. You will now be presented a screen to
configure the chosen area. This is the most important
screen of the Robo Tape setup program. Here is where you
will define how Robo Tape will handle each area, on an
area by area basis. Robo Tape is highly flexible and can
be configured to handle each area as just a Tape Area, a
Tape and File Area with Upload capability, CD Rom Area
and so on.
FILE AREA NAME PAGE 5
■─────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
This is where you define the Area Name that the user
will see. This field is limited to a 32 charactor field
length. Also if the user's Access Security Level is lower
than what is defined for this area, the File Area Name
won't be shown to the user. Up to 150 areas may be defined.
PATH TO FILES.BBS
■─────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Define the path to the file that contains a listing
of all files available for restore or download in this
area. The file should be in the standard FILES.BBS format
which consists of.....
FILENAME.EXT [0003] DESCRIPTION OF FILE
Robo Tape will display filename, download counter (if
present) and the description. Also if you use a utility
that adds comments to your FILES.BBS, Robo Tape will
display them in a seperate color.
NAME OF FILES.BBS
■─────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Define the name of the FILES.BBS file here. It can
be any qualified dos filename that you desire. It is
possible to have all of your files.bbs type files in one
directory if you wish. This will allow for a cd rom to be
used along with your hard disks and tape drive.
TAPE VOLUMN NUMBER
■─────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Define the tape volumn number that files for this
area were saved to on tape. Valid numbers are 1 through
999. If this area is not a tape dependent area just
leave it at it's default zero (0) setting.
TAPE PATH TO FILES PAGE 6
■─────────────────────────────────────────────────────■
This option should be pointed to the path from which
the files were backed up from. Example, if you had a
directory on your C: drive called DOORS, from which you
performed the backup from to volumn 1. Then the volumn
number would be set to 1 and the path TO THIS VOLUMN AREA
would be....
C:\DOORS\
All files in a Tape Area, MUST have been backed
up to tape from the SAME DIRECTORY. That is, all files in
TAPE AREA 1 should have come from the same directory on
the hard drive. This is not to say that you can't divide
them up by defining different TAPE FILE AREAS for the
same VOLUMN. Let's say you have GIFS, BBS FILES, and DOS
UTILS all saved to the same volumn on tape. By defining
seperate tape areas for each (GIFS in one, BBS FILES in
another). And then pointing each area to a seperate
FILES.BBS file for that area (via the PATH TO FILES BBS
and NAME OF FILES BBS), you can have all your files backed
up to one volumn, but have as many different areas
pointing to it as you wish. Like I said, Robo Tape is
highly flexible and limited by only your imagination.
If this area is not a tape file area, then just leave
the default path as it is, since it won't be used any how.
RESTORE FILES TO PATH
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
IMPORTANT! This path must be set to point to
where files are to be downloaded from and/or
uploaded to, or restored to. It cannot be left at
it's default setting.
This is the path to which files on tape are
RESTORED to on the hard drive. It is possible to
have all tape areas restore the files to the same
directory, and then in nightly maintinance, do a
del *.* of that directory. There by keeping disk
space at a maximum. One note, in order to by pass
DOS's prompting you if your sure you want to delete
all files in a directory, make sure your
commandline in your batch file looks like this....
echo y| del *.* (this may not work under OS/2).
PAGE 7
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
NOTE! This is also the path where Robo Tape looks
for the File DownLoad Functions for this area.
This path is also where Robo Tape looks to see
if the files listed in the FILES.BBS for this area
physically exist in this path. If they do, then
Robo Tape will report to the user that the file is
on DISK or else it will report that the file is on
TAPE when the user hits [L]ist Files On Tape. Or if
the user hits the [B]rowse Files For Download, then
Robo Tape will report the file size in kilo bytes
if the file exists in this path or else it will
report that the file is on TAPE. Robo Tape is
intelligent enough to know not to restore a file if
it already exists in the restore directory for that
area, and also not to allow a user to attempt to
download a file that hasn't been restored yet.
If Robo Tape only displays a blank screen when
you want to do a listing of files to restore or
download, you don't have the path to the files.bbs
for this area pointing to the right directory. :)
UPDATE FILES.BBS Y/N
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Robo Tape will optionally update the files.bbs
located in the above (RESTORE FILES TO PATH)
directory if you wish. This would come in handy if
you had this area set to restore to a directory
(area) which contained a files.bbs that this files
was not listed in. Robo Tape would append the
filename, ext., download counter, and description
to the files.bbs type file for this area. If you
had all files being restored to the same directory,
you must set this option to yes if the files.bbs
type file does not contain entries for files in
this area. Else the file could not be downloaded
since the file is not listed in the files.bbs type
file, which must be the case before a file is
approved and shown to the user for download by
Robo Tape (or any bbs software).
You would NOT want to use this option if you
were restoring to a directory that already had a
files.bbs type file that contained a listing for
the files to be restored into that area. Example...
the PATH TO FILES.BBS and RESTORE FILE TO PATH both
pointed to the same directory that contained a
files.bbs type file that listed all the files for
restore in that area. You would want to set this
option to "N" to keep from getting dupes in your
files.bbs type file.
FILE NAME TO UPDATE PAGE 8
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
This is the filename of the files.bbs type
file you would want Robo Tape to append the
filename, ext., download counter, and description
to, in the RESTORE FILE TO PATH directory for this
area. This is for the updating of the files.bbs
type file, to reflect the restore of a file in this
area so the user would be able to see it when doing
a file listing for this area. If you have the
UPDATE FILES.BBS for this area set to "No", then
just leave this option set to the default, since it
is not used.
Again Robo Tape's seemingly endless flexibility
shines through with almost infinite control over
what files are available to users for download.
Let's say you had an area that you allow users to
upload to. But you don't want to allow users to
download files from this area until you've checked
them for virus. Simply set the Update FILES.BBS to
"Y", and set the FILENAME TO UPDATE to a different
file name than what is pointed to in the NAME OF
FILES.BBS path. Therefore the user can not see the
file being in the uploads directory and Robo Tape
will refuse to allow the user to download it, but
you will have a list of files uploaded to scan with
your virus checker. Also if the filename you have
defined to update does not exist, it will be
created and appended to.
UPLOADS ALLOWED Y/N
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
If you have DSZ file transfers activated,
then you may also allow Uploads into any area.
Robo Tape will check the "Restore Files To Path"
for all areas, which is the path used for all File
Transfers for each area, to see if the file being
uploaded is already present in one of the defined
areas. The upload will be denied if already present
also Robo Tape will refuse to allow a file with
the filename FILES.BBS to be uploaded.
ACCESS SECURITY LEVEL PAGE 9
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
This is where you define the access level
needed to access this area. A user must have this
security level or above to enter this area. This
area will not be shown in the area choice listing
if the users sec. level is below the level defined
for this area. The user's security level is
obtained from the door drop file (DORINFO1.DEF,
CHAIN.TXT, SFDOORS.DAT, DOOR.SYS, CALLINFO.BBS).
SYSTEM CONFIGURATION AND SET UP TIPS
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Robo Tape requires that the PATH to the door
information drop file (DORINFO1.DEF, CHAIN.TXT,
SFDOORS.DAT, DOOR.SYS, CALLINFO.BBS) be passed as
a commandline parameter unless the drop file resides
or is copied into the same directory that Robo Tape
resides in. An example is........
ROBOT200.EXE C:\ROBOBBS
Noticed I only gave the PATH and not the actual
filename of the door drop file, Robo Tape will
automatically search for the drop file that matches
one of the above with the latest time stamp. If Robo
tape fails to find a drop file in the path passed
to it on the commandline, it will exit with a critical
error and report that a door info file was not found.
Here is a sample batch file showing the proper
way to call Robo Tape.....
@echo off
cd\robobbs\robotape
robot200 c:\robobbs
cd\robobbs
IMPORTANT NOTE! When using Robo Tape with
Remote Access, you must put the *M on the optional
data line in the ramenu configuration. The *M
instructs RA to swap itself out of memory. If the
BBS software your using also has a switch to swap
the BBS Software out, you SHOULD use it. Failing
to do so will cause Robo Tape to not be able to
execute CMS's Tape Software to do a restore from
tape.
Colorado Memory System's Tape Software requires
approximately 450k to operate, if memory is not
available it will either refuse to load, or it will
search the tape infinitly for a file. Also when
attempting a Restore without sufficient memory,
Robo Tape will blank the screen for a second then
report that the file was restored, when in actuality
there was insufficient memory to spawn the CMS Tape
Software.
ROBO TAPE'S MAIN USER SCREEN PAGE 10
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Below is a screen shot of what the Robo Tape
user screen looks like. If the Use DSZ option in
ROPBOTCFG.EXE was set to "No" then the file
transfer options would not be listed and the box
would close together to eliminate the gap. Also if
this were not an upload area, the.....
[U] Upload Files option would not be shown.

Here is a run down of all the hot keys
available on Robo Tape's Main Menu.
[C] Change File Area
This command will list available file areas
and allow the user to chose between them.
Again the user's Access Security Level must be
equal to or greater than the Access Security
Level defined for an area to be shown. This is
also displayed to the user after the opening
screen.
PAGE 11
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
[Q] Quit And Exit To BBS
This is pretty self-explanatory, the user
should select this option when they're ready
to return to the BBS.
RESTORE FUNCTIONS
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
[L] List File To Restore
This key will display the FILES.BBS type file
that is defined for this area in ROBOTCFG
under the Path To Files.BBS and Files.BBS.
Robo Tape will also search the Restore Files
To Path, to see if a file physically exist on
disk. If the file exists on disk, then the
word DISK will be displayed next to the
filename, else the word TAPE will be
displayed. If Robo Tape displays a blank
screen when doing a listing, then you don't
have the path and filename to the files.bbs
type file setup correctly in ROBOTCFG.EXE for
this area.
[A] Add Files To Restore Que
There's two ways to add files to the built in
Restore Que. You can either List the files and
Tag them, or if you already know what file you
want to Restore you can pick this option and
type in the filename. Robo Tape will check to
see if the filename given is listed in the
files.bbs type file for this area, if it
isn't, then Robo Tape will advise the user
that the filename is not available for
restore. Also the filename will be checked to
see if it has already restored to the Restore
Directory Path, if so then the user will be
advised that it is already restored and
available for DownLoad.
[S] Show Restore Que
This function will list the files that are in
the Restore Que waiting to be restored.
[E] Edit The Restore Que
This function allows the user to remove files,
one at a time, from the Restore Que. Up to
three (3) files can be in the Restore Que at
one time, Robo Tape will then instruct the
user that they must Restore the que before
more files can be added.
PAGE 12
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
[P] Purge The Restore Que
This will remove ALL files currently in the
Restore Que, an alternative to Editing the
Que.
[R] Restore Files In Que To Download
This will Restore to disk, all files that are
currently in the Restore Que. Robo Tape will
swap itself out of conventional memory (either
to EMS or Disk) and Spawn the CMS Tape
Software to perform the Restore Operation.
Restore times depend on alot of factors, the
biggest factor is the amount of memory
available to the Colorado Memory Systems Tape
Software. I recommend at least 512k of memory
available to the Tape Software. If your
running DESQview, be sure you have at least
this much memory available for this window.
Also because of the memory requirements, it is
probably not possible to run Robo Tape in more
than one window at a time (multi-node). This
is a limitation of CMS's Tape Software, and
not Robo Tape. Although, if your running OS/2
this may not be a problem, at the end of this
document, I have text of a fellow sysop's OS/2
setup for running Front Door or D'Bridge,
Remote Access and Robo-Board BBS, with Robo
Tape and CMS tape Software. Special thanks to
Lloyd Hatley for sharing this info with us. :)
Also restore times are based on the
location of the files on tape. Tape drives
store files in a sequential fashion, one right
after another, and also access the files in
the same order as they were backed up. The
closer to the beginning of the tape, the
faster the restore and access time is going to
be.
FILE TRANSFER FUNCTIONS PAGE 13
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
[B] Browse File To Download
This function will display the files.bbs type
file for this area that is located in the
"Restore Files To Path" defined for this area
in Robotcfg.exe. If the files in the files.bbs
type file physically exists in this path, then
the file size in kilo-bytes, will be display
next to the filename. Else the word "TAPE",
will be shown. If Robo Tape displays a blank
screen when you select this function, then you
don't have the path and filename setup
correctly in ROBOTCFG.EXE for this area.
[Z] Edit DownLoad Que
This function will allow the user to edit the
files that are in the DownLoad Que. Files may
be removed one at a time in any order.
[T] Purge DownLoad Que
All file in the DownLoad Que will be removed
with this function.
[V] View Files In DownLoad Que
Files currently qued for download will be
displayed to the user.
[I] Insert Files In DownLoad Que
Similiar to the Add Files To Restore Que, this
function will allow you to add files to
DownLoad Que if you already know the filename.
Files can be added to the DownLoad Que in two
ways, either by this function, or by
[B]rowsing The Files For DownLoad and
"Tagging" files, thereby adding them to the
DownLoad Que. Up to three files can be added
to the DownLoad Que before Robo Tape will
request they be downloaded. Robo Tape will
check to see if the files physically exists in
the "Restore Files To Path" which is also the
"Files For DownLoad" path, if the file doesn't
exist, Robo Tape will advise the user that it
must be restored first before it can be
downloaded.
PAGE 14
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
[D] DownLoad Files In DownLoad Que
You MUST have DSZ in your path for this
function to work correctly. The user will be
presented the DownLoad Protocol Menu with
Xmodem, Ymodem, and Zmodem protocols. The user
may choose which protocol to use or they may
[A]bort the Transfer, which will remove all
files from the DownLoad Que and return them to
Robo Tape's main Menu. A user will be advised
that the Que is empty if this option is
selected and no files have been added to the
Que. If a download would exceed the user's
time limit Robo Tape will deny the transfer
and suggest that the user edit the que.
[U] Upload Files
If you have uploads turned on for this area, a
user will be presented with the Upload
Protocol Menu. Xmodem, Ymodem, and Zmodem
protocols are available. Before the uploading
begins the user will be prompted for the
filename of the file being transfered, Robo
Tape will search the "Restore Files To Path"
for all areas checking for file duplication.
If the file is not present on the system, Robo
Tape will proceed with the upload, else the
transfer will be denied. Also, the filename
FILES.BBS will not be allowed for uploading.
FILE AND TEXT SEARCHING FUNCTIONS PAGE 15
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Robo tape has two versatile searching
functions that will aid users in finding files
available for restore and download.
[+] [K] Key Word Text Searching
This will search the files.bbs type files in
all of the areas for text given by the user.
Filenames and descriptions will be looked at
for possible matches, and if found will be
displayed to the user along with what area
they were found in. An example would be if the
user were to give the word "win" to search
for. The words "Windows", Wind", "Winding",
"Winsome", "Winwood", would all be displayed
to the user, along with the filename and
description for the file found.
[+] [F] Fuzzy File Name Search
This util will match any file found within the
current area and display the filename and
extension to the user. DOS wildcards (*.*)
maybe used.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
■────────────────────────────────────────────────■
Robo Tape is being offered as shareware, you
should register, if you continue to use it after
a evaluation period of two weeks. It is only $10.00
dollars (US Currency) for full registration. Your
registration also entitles you to free upgrades in
the future. Also the price will go up in future
versions, added features like support for
Robo-Board's VGA graphics and Rmodem capability.
So now is the time to register as I am
already working on the next version. Upon my
receiving your registration, I will send your
registration code that you will enter into the
ROBOTCFG.EXE program (F3 from the menu). This will
turn on all the registered features of Robo tape.
If you live in FidoNet ZONE 1, and have a
FidoNet address, (not a point) I can send the reg.
code to you crash mail. If you do not live in zone
1, your registration code will be mailed to you via
the postal service. All payments MUST be in either
US Currency (CASH) or by an InterNational Money
Order imprinted in the amount of $10.00 US
Currency. I will NOT accept Canadian Postal Money
Orders, my post office charges me $5.00 per money
order to cash them :(
Included in this archive is a file named
REGIST.FRM, send it or a facsimile of it, to the
address on the form, which is also listed below,
along with your payment. If you are receiving your
code by crash netmail, I will send it to you the
same day I receive your registration. If you are
receiving your code via the postal service, I will
mail it back to you (via the option you choose) the
following day that I receive it.

THANKS AND CREDITS PAGE 18

I would like to thank Lloyd Hatley for setting
up Robo Tape to run under OS/2 2.0 and sending his
settings to me to include in this document. There is
a wealth of information to be found in the file
ROBOTSET.OS2 which is included in the archive.
I would also like to thank Sam McDaniel for
setting up Robo Tape and helping me to get the code
optimized to run under DOS and Remote Access.
Thanks guys, you put your systems at great risk with
some of the early alpha and beta versions, we
appreciate it!
