Battle Ships V2.0
Copyright 1991, Motor City Software - All rights reserved.
MAIN MENU
[W]ho Else Is Online
This will allow you to see who else is online at the present time.
If there is another player in Battle Ship, it will indicate this
under the Status heading. This shows ALL users logged onto the bbs.
It will also put a * under the Msg title if that user has an online
message waiting. If you page a user to play BattleShips, you can use
this feature to tell when he receives your message.
[S]end Online Message
This will allow you to page another user to ask him to play Battle
Ships. You will be shown a list of users currently logged onto the
BBS, and then may pick a node to send a message to. You can also
send it to ALL other users. Now you will be prompted for up to ten
lines of text to send, and then asked if you wish to Send it, or
to Abort.
[G]et Online Message
If someone sends you an online message, then this menu option will
be blinking yellow. Simply hit G to read the online message. You
may press G whenever you like, but if no online message is waiting
for you, it will simply tell you 'No Messages For This Node' and
pause for a second before redisplaying the menu. If there is an
online message waiting for you, it will be displayed, and you will
be prompted to hit return. The message is only displayed once, and
then is deleted.
[I]nstructions
Display this help file.
[Q]uit to BBS
This will exit the BattleShips game, and return you to the BBS.
[P]lay Battle Ships
If you are the only one in the BattleShips door, it will tell you
'Nobody Else Is Here To Play! This Door Only Works With Two Players!'
'Send an online message to another user to play.'
If there is another user in the door, the screen will clear, draw
the game board, and prompt you to Deploy Your Ships.
NOTE: If the sysop or other user is playing in local mode against a
remote user, then the remote users screen will remain BLANK
on the local end. This way no cheating is possible.
Deploying Ships
The playing screen is made up of 90 co-ordinates, 10 across, and
9 down. Numbers are listed across the top, and letters down the
side.
You will be prompted for locations for 6 ships, and these are:
Type Of Ship Length
------------ ------
Aircraft Carrier 6
Battle Cruiser 5
Destroyer 4
Escort 3
Tender 2
You will be prompted for a location for each ship seperately.
To place these ships on your playing grid, you specify the start
position on the grid, using the letter first, followed by the
number. Example A3
Then you will be prompted for the Direction. If you are using a
PC or Clone, simply hit your numlock key, and use the keypad for
entering directions. Diagonal Ship Plcasement is allowed in this
game. Example:
7 8 9
Up/Left Up Up/Right
4 6
Left Right
1 2 3
Down/Left Down Down/Right
Full checking is done to ensure that the ships fit inside the
playing grid and do not overlap each other...
Once you have deployed all of your ships, you will be asked if
the placement is OK. If not, it will redraw your screen, and prompt
you again to deploy your ships.
When you have your ships deployed, then the game will synchronise
with the other player. The first player to set up his ships will
go first!
While you are waiting for the other player to finish setting up his
ships, you have the option to Abort if you feel something has gone
wrong.
Now the game begins!
When its your turn :
Your screen will be redrawn showing you his grid (minus ships) and
you will be prompted for a target. This is entered in the form of
Letter Number, eg. A3 Then hit return...
If you hit one of his ships, it will display a red * in that co-
ordinate. If you miss, it will display a blue +
You will be told whether it is a hit or a miss.
You can also send up to a 25 character message with each shot,
just hit S then return when prompted for a target. You will then
be prompted for a short message to send. Once you hit return,
you will then again be asked for the target. This message will
be displayed briefly on your opponents screen.
Also displayed on your screen is your opponents name, and status.
Here is will show that he is waiting for you...
At the bottom right side of the screen will be a list of his ships.
If you sink one of his ships, it will show up as SUNK!
If you hit return by itself at the prompt for a target, you will
be asked if you wish to quit. If you hit N for no, then the game
will resume normally. If you do quit, you forfeit the game, and your
opponent wins!
When Its the Other players turn :
Your screen will show your opponents name, and his status will
show as 'Thinking....'
You simply wait until he takes his shot, then you are notified of
the result. Your screen is updated to reflect this shot, and like
explained above, either a red * or a blue +
If he sends you a message, it will be displayed under his Status
line.
At the bottom right of your screen is a list of your ships, and the
number of hits they have taken. When the hits = length of the ship,
it is sunk.
When someone wins!
A winner is declared when all of one players ships have been sunk.
A defult winner is declared when one player wuits during game play.
If the sysop has allowed it, a message will be written from the
winner to the loser in the BBS's message base. Ask your sysop which
message base he has set up for scores...
Basically, thats it...
We hope you enjoy playing this interactive online game. Motor City Software
will be producing many more doors like this, so ask your sysop to watch for
them!
