WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS SUPPOSED TO DO
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BBList is an on-line door program that will keep track of information
on other BBS's. Users may remotely view a short list of BBS's, view
a more detailed list of BBS's, or add another BBS to the list. BBS
entries can be deleted by the user who entered the data, the sysop of
the BBS itself, or the sysop of the BBS running BBList. BBList will
also generate ANSI/ASCII BBS lists each time the list is modified
which can be used as bulletins, logon screens, etc.
BBList currently keeps track of the following information for each
BBS:
The name of the BBS
The sysop's name
The city the BBS is located in
The state the BBS is located in
The BBS's phone number
Whether the BBS supports 24 hour operation
The BBS's Fidonet address
The number of nodes the BBS has
Whether the BBS is a subscription board or not
The on-line storage space the BBS has
Three lines of description for the BBS
CONFIGURING BBList
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before running Big BBS List, a configuration file needs to be
created/modified:
Line 1: Door data file type.
Line 2: Path to the door data file(s).
Line 3: BBS name.
Line 4: Sysop's name.
Line 5: Locked baud rate.
Line 6: Number of lines between each pause in the ANSI/ASCII files.
Line 7: CTRL-codes or @-codes to be placed at the top of the ANSI &
ASCII files.
Line 8: Text to be displayed before a pause prompt.
Line 9: CTRL-codes or @-codes to force the BBS to pause while
listing the ANSI/ASCII files.
As illustrated above, the door's data file type is specified in line 1
and can be PCB for PCBoard, GAP for GAP (DOOR.SYS), SF for Spitfire,
RBBS for RBBS, WC for WildCat!, TRIBBS for TriBBS, or WWIV for WWIV.
The locked baud rate is specified in line 5. If you don't lock
your serial port, you must specify 0 for the locked baud rate.
NOTE: Although many door formats do pass the locked baud rate in the
door data files, some older formats such as RBBS do not. For
conformity, BBList requires that you specify the locked baud rate in
line 5 and ignores any value passed in the door data files.
Many BBS's now support embedded CTRL or @ codes that determine how a
text file is displayed. TriBBS, for example, has an @-command,
@MOREON@, that forces the BBS, while displaying an ANSI/ASCII file, to
pause every 23 lines. If your BBS supports a feature like this,
insert this text on line 7. Another of these @-codes forces TriBBS
to automatically display "Press any key to continue..." and wait for a
keypress. If your BBS supports this feature, insert the text for this
command on line 9. If you use this feature, insert the number of
lines between each pause on line 6. Some BBS's, like Remote Access,
support this feature, but do not display any text. If your BBS
supports a pause feature, but will not automatically display text,
insert the text to be displayed on line 8. To find out if your BBS
package supports these features, consult your BBS manual. DO NOT USE
BOTH LINES 7 AND 9. USE ONLY ONE OR THE OTHER OR NEITHER. Funny
things might happen. Leave any unused lines blank.
Included in this archive is a sample file called SAMPLE.CFG:
TRIBBS <- Data file type
C:\TRIBBS <- Path to data file
The Magic Of Krynn <- BBS Name
Sean Laurent <- Sysop name
38400 <- Locked baud rate
23 <- Pause in the ANSI/ASCII files every 23 lines
<- BBS command to auto-pause every xx lines
<- Text to be displayed before a pause
@PAUSE@ <- BBS command to pause
==============================================================================
EXTRA FILES
~~~~~~~~~~~~
BBList will also create the following files:
BBSLIST.DAT - Data file containing the information about each BBS.
FIRST.DAT - Tells BBList where the first record, alphabetically, is
in the BBS listing.
BBSLIST.ANS
&
BBSLIST.BBS - ANSI/ASCII BBS listings. Created only when someone adds
or deletes a BBS.
==============================================================================
RUNNING BBLIST
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Running BBList involves a simple command line:
BBSLIST.EXE nameofconfigurationfile {/L} {nonstandard IRQ}
nameofconfigurationfile is a required parameter specifying the name of
the configuration file to use.
/L is an optional parameter to force a Local Logon.
nonstandard IRQ is an optional parameter for BBS's using modems on
nonstandard IRQs. Simply specify the IRQ on the command line if
you're using a non-standard IRQ.
Also included in this archive is a sample batch file to run BBList
called BBLIST.BAT:
@ECHO OFF
CD\DOORS\BBLIST <- Change to the BBList directory
BBSLIST NODE1.CFG <- Run BBSLIST using NODE1.CFG
IF EXIST BBSLIST.ANS MOVE BBSLIST.ANS C:\TRIBBS\DISPLAY\BULLET3.ANS
IF EXIST BBSLIST.BBS MOVE BBSLIST.BBS C:\TRIBBS\DISPLAY\BULLET3.BBS
CD\TRIBBS <- Change back to the main TriBBS directory
BOARD.BAT <- Reload the BBS
==============================================================================
CLEARING BBS LIST
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To clear or rest the BBS list simply delete BBSLIST.DAT. BBList will
automatically create a new BBSLIST.DAT and a new FIRST.DAT the next
time it is run.
==============================================================================
MULTI-NODE SUPPORT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BBList DOES have support for multiple nodes. Simply create a different
drop-file configuration file for each node and call BBSLIST.EXE
accordingly.
Example:
NODE1.CFG is the configuration file for node 1 on The Magic Of Krynn.
NODE2.CFG is the configuration file for node 2 on The Magic Of Krynn.
To run Regis from node 1, the following command line could be used:
BBSLIST.EXE NODE1.CFG
To run Regis from node 2, the following command line could be used:
BBSLIST.EXE NODE2.CFG

FAQ: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & THEIR ANSWERS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: I ran the batch file included with BBList, but DOS gives me a BAD
command or filename error. What's wrong?
A: The batch file included with BBList is just a sample configuration
configured according to my setup on my system. To eliminate this
problem, use a text editor, and edit the batch file. Change the
line that says, "CD\DOORS\BBLIST" to reflect the name of the
directory on your system that BBList resides in.
Big BBS List was written entirely in Turbo Pascal 6.0, utilizing
RMDoor 4.1 communication routines written by Mark Goodwin and Randy
Hunt.
