Toronto's Family Network
Thank you for taking the time to read this introduction to TFN!
Perhaps it is easiest to start explaining what TFN is by telling you what
it isn't. TFN is not a collection of religious bulletin boards. Rather
it is a collection of bulletin boards in and around the Toronto area
dedicated to lessening the black eye that the distribution of adult
material has placed upon the BBS community as a whole. If you are at all
like me, you were embarrassed to be operating a board last year when the
media was full of stories relating to the type of material available on
certain area boards.
Membership in TFN is limited to area BBS' who carry no adult material
whatsoever. Not only must a TFN board be free of adult files, but also
adult conferences. This condition of membership will be enforced through
periodic system inspections. Those systems found to be in violation will
be cautioned and should the material not be removed, the system will be.
The only other condition of membership is that your system has been in
operation for at least six months and that you demonstrate your ability
to transfer mail using the .QWK format. Can you say dupes?..<g>
But TFN is not only a collection of adult free boards. TFN also hopes to
fill the gap currently existing in the Toronto area for conferences
specific to life in the city. While duplication of existing conferences
is not the goal of TFN (I think we have enough Telix conferences
already..), there is certainly room for a few new conferences dealing
with matters of local interest.
Those conferences immediately available are:
(1) TFNChat - A general purpose chat conference where users of any TFN
system can get together and discuss whatever they please.
This conference would hopefully become an echoed 'main
board' of all the member systems.
(2) OnTheTown - Discussions relating to the activities and nightlife in
and around Toronto. Movie and restaurant reviews, current
events..you name it.
(3) JayTalk - Somewhere for Blue Jays fans (and c'mon, after a World
Series win, who can honestly say they aren't!) to get
together and discuss both the Jays and baseball in
general.
(4) TFNSysop - A private sysop only conference for discussing matters
relating to the day to day operation of the net. With any
luck whatsoever, this will be another chat conference as
politics and rules are not something that will be in the
forefront with TFN!
As time goes on and more systems connect with TFN, the conferences may
easily be expanded upon should there be an interest in doing so.
There is no fee whatsoever for joining TFN and only simple conditions
imposed. And I think we can leave the rules and politics to the existing
networks. TFN isn't so much a net as it is an endorsement that your
board does not distribute adult material. That you care about the files
and conferences that you make available to your users.
And don't think for one moment that the users, especially parents whose
children utilize BBS' will not appreciate the breath of fresh air that
this concept can provide.
Those systems currently members of TFN are listed in the enclosed
WHO_IS.TFN file.
If you are interested in more information, please drop me a comment on my
main board and we can discuss it. If the concept already seems sound to
you (and you really have nothing to lose), please complete the enclosed
application and upload it privately to my system.
Together we can help to make BBSing something more than the peep show
that it is turning into!
