  4. Changes relative to 3.0x versions:
  5. ----------------------------------
  6.  
  7. A few rough edges on the previous version have been fixed and number of new
  8. features have been added.  The additions:
  9.  
  10.    FROM WITHIN FILE MODE:
  11.    ----------------------
  12.  
  13.      a)  Typing "V" displays 'Volume Information,' including the free bytes
  14.      available on the current drive and an editable VOLUME LABEL field.
  15.  
  16.      b)  For Copy/Move/Zip operations, the target path input field now is
  17.      active first, and <TAB> puts you in the new filename input field.
  18.  
  19.      c)  During Copy/Move/Zip, the target drive is now checked for write
  20.      protection before the operation is attempted, giving a timely "mission
  21.      impossible" message if it is.

  24.    FROM WITHIN NOTE MODE:
  25.    ----------------------
  26.  
  27.      a)  In note mode, generation of special symbols with Alt-Keypad key
  28.      combinations is now possible.
  29.  
  30.      b)  The "whole note copied" message is now cleared automatically by the
  31.      next keystroke; a separate keystroke is no longer required.

  34.    ADDITIONS TO CONFIGURATION MENUS:
  35.    ---------------------------------
  36.  
  37.      Switches have been added on the Configuration Options menu to:
  38.  
  39.      a)  ... to turn 'file overwrite protection' on or off for file copying
  40.      and moving operations.  This switch determines whether any matching
  41.      filenames in a target directory are automatically overwritten, or whether
  42.      the user is prompted first.  The former action was to always prompt you.
  43.  
  44.      b)  ... to turn on or off the creation of a DEMARCAT.ION file during
  45.      directory changes and on exit.  This file is used to restore file marks
  46.      when you return to the directory (a previous feature, please see the
  47.      manual for details).
  48.  
  49.      c)  ... to force 4FILES to startup in Note Mode (File Mode is the
  50.      default).
  51.  
  52.      d)  ... to force 4FILES to leave numlock as-is on startup.  If NumLock was
  53.      active, this setting allows the keypad to type numbers, but the grey keys
  54.      still have their 4FILES navigation functions.
  55.  
  56.      e)  Also, changes have been made to the switches controlling blinking at
  57.      termination, display of the previous DOS screen, and whether 4FILES colors
  58.      are retained at exit.  Your old settings will not be in effect, so you may
  59.      need to set these switches.  If, with blinking disabled and 4F colors
  60.      retained at exit you have had trouble with poorly behaved programs showing
  61.      strange colors, these changes will help and further explanation is given
  62.      on page 22 of 4F.DOC.

  65.    OPERATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS:
  66.    -------------------------
  67.  
  68.      a)  During operations from write protected disks, including CDROMs, the
  69.      DEMARCAT.ION file (preserving file marks) and 0-4F-DOS.ERR error trapping
  70.      files are now written to your TEMP directory.  This avoids the two
  71.      warning messages ("can't save marks" and "can't trap errors") which were
  72.      previously generated from read only disks.
  73.  
  74.      A ^L (Ctrl-L) command has been added to show the error trapping file via
  75.      your LIST utility.  When leaving this display you are promted to delete
  76.      the error file.  The ^L command will read the error file from the current
  77.      directory or your TEMP directory, as appropriate.

  80.    VIDEO MODE CHANGES ON-THE-FLY:
  81.    ------------------------------
  82.  
  83.      VIDEO MODE CHANGES ON-THE-FLY.  <Ctrl-F7> cycles through all available
  84.      video modes, using either of two methods.  These are described in the
  85.      manual.  In a nutshell, with EGA and VGA monitors you cycle through
  86.      25, 43 and 50 (VGA only) row displays, or you can specify any special
  87.      extended video mode your hardware supports.  See the manual for
  88.      details.

  91. FIXES:
  92. ======
  93.   The following difficulties or bugs have been fixed:
  94.  
  95.     1)  A TEMP directory that was not a root directory was not being
  96.         recognized as valid, resulting in less than optimal action or no
  97.         action of several 4FILES features if you had a more complex TEMP
  98.         directory specification in your environment.
  99.  
  100.     1)  Note mode problem fixed.  Variously, typed characters would
  101.         sometimes not show; or the cursor would return to the top of the list
  102.         rather than the record that was current after a utility was executed.
  103.  
  104.     2)  During a prompted (^D)elete, trouble with the (N)o delete option
  105.         has been fixed.
  106.  
  107.     3)  Problem with adding marked files to an existing archive file corrected.
  108.  
  109.     4)  The problem encountered when logging onto a disk with too many files has
  110.         been fixed.  In correcting this, capacity has been lowered from 799 to
  111.         798 records.
  112.  
  113.     5)  Symbols for keys shown on the Utility Ports Configuration menu now
  114.         keep in synch with your choice of keyboard type or substitution of
  115.         <CR> for <G+> on the Configuration Options menu.

  119. UPDATE INFORMATION RELATIVE TO VERSION 2U.x
  120.  
  121.   o  Marked files may now be copied, moved, renamed, and archived (to ZIP, ARJ
  122.      and LHA formats, with file descriptions included).  Marked file operations
  123.      for file attributes and deletion already existed in earlier versions.
  124.  
  125.   o  History lists have been added for these input fields: filename, target
  126.      directory, directory change, and DOS command line.  Input field have been
  127.      completely redesigned.
  128.  
  129.   o  Many new keystroke commands have been added (see below).
  130.  
  131.   o  A special keyboard configuration for laptop computers may now be selected.
  132.  
  133.   o  There is an internal routine for registered users to brand future
  134.      shareware versions as registered.
  135.  
  136.   o  The Configuration Routine has been improved, a utility port added, and
  137.      several option switches added.  New command line switches have been added
  138.      as well.
  139.  
  140.   o  A DOS-order directory sort has been added to the 10 pre-existing sorts.

  142.   o  The setting and handling of file marks has been improved.

  145. TEMP Directory Recommended
  146. --------------------------
  147.     Note that for the marked file and archiving operations to work as fast as
  148. possible you should have a tempory directory, named TEMP, set up.  In
  149. AUTOEXEC.BAT you can put a statement like:  SET TEMP=d:\ where "d" is a RAMDISK
  150. or hard drive.  A directory may be included in the specification if desired.
  151. 4FILES uses the TEMP directory as a place to put temporary it needs to
  152. create during some operations, and it deletes its temporary files when done
  153. with them.  A RAM disk is perfect for this purpose.
  154.  
  155.  
  156. New Key Mappings
  157. ----------------
  158.     The keyboard may now be configured for a laptop computer via the
  159. configuration screen.  The <[>, <]> and <Enter> keys are substituted for
  160. <G*>, <G-> and <G+> respectively.  Settings for this switch are 1=AT, 2=PC and
  161. 3=laptop, as shown on-screen.  The "2" setting substitutes the <Scrl-Lk> key
  162. for <G*>.
  163.  
  164.     <F7> now toggles the display of file attributes and file times.
  165. In addition, <Shift><Numlock> still does this on non-laptop keyboards.
  166.  
  167.     A new utility port has been added for <F8>.
  168.  
  169.     In File Mode only, <F9> now duplicates ^X (execute immediately).

  172. Changed & New Command Line Switches:
  173. ------------------------------------
  174.   /C(hrono) sort replaces /T(ime/date) sort.
  175.   /R(everse) sort replaces /D(escending) sort.
  176.   /U(nsorted) is a new switch, and gives the DOS sort order.
  177.  
  178.   The above changes were made to agree with useage in the new Re-sort Menu,
  179.   which has (U)nsorted added to it.
  180.  
  181.   /L  For use if 4F is called from a numeric-keypad intensive operation.
  182.       Keypad state is restored on exit from 4FILES.  This is a new switch,
  183.       required by changes in NumLock (see below).
  184.  
  185.   /M  Prevents marks in an old DEMARCAT.ION file from being ignored.

  188. New keystroke commands:

  190.   ^C    Copy all marked files.

  199.   New file marking keys, in addition to the old F5, F6, ^F5 and ^F6:

  201.   <Space>         Toggle marked/unmarked for the current file.
  202.   <^SPACE>        Swap (toggle) the marks on all files.
  203.   <^/> and <^\>   These duplicate <^F5> & <^F6> file marking.

  205.   Other Keys
  206.   ----------
  207.   <NumLock>         Now has its normal, keypad-toggling function back.
  208.   <Shft><NumLock>   Toggles the display of file attributes and creation time.
  209.                     (This is what <NumLock> did in earlier versions.)

  211.   ^D   IN TEXT ENTRY MODES:  Deletes the file descriptions for all marked
  212.        files (giving a prompt first of course).  In file mode this key deletes
  213.        marked files.  The prompts appear on different segments of the screen to
  214.        help distinguish the pending actions of the two senses of this key.

  217.   ^H   IN FILE MODE: If 4DOS is active, shell to DOS and show the command
  218.        history window.
  219.  
  220.   ^H   IN TEXT ENTRY MODES:  Destructive backspace.
  221.  
  222.   ^W   Presents a DESCRIPT.ION Write Menu, with choices to (S)ave notes
  223.        immediately or (A)bandon all unsaved note edits.
  224.  
  225.   <Shft><ESC>   Alternate exit means in Windows and OS/2 since the preferred
  226.                <@ESC> and <^ESC> keys are appropriated by these systems.
  227.  
  228.   <^INS>       These three keys cut and paste text as they do in Windows ...
  229.   <$INS>       ... and are in addition to the preferred use of the F9 ...
  230.   <$DEL>       ... and F10 keys.

  235. Directory List Sorting
  236. ----------------------
  237.     In the sorting menu, ascending or descending sorts are now selected with
  238. the UpArrow or DownArrow keys, rather than <G-> or <G+>.  (U)nsorted has been
  239. added.
