  1. OS/2 2.1 Power 9100 Display Drivers
  2. Version 1.10.10 BETA

  5. Driver Features:
  6. ----------------
  7.  
  8. This driver supports the following features:
  9.  
  10.  1) PCI/VL-Bus Auto Detection.
  11.  2) 8, 16 and 32 Bits Per Pixel.
  12.  3) IBM 525 RAMDAC support.
  13.  4) Brooktree 485 RAMDAC support.
  14.  5) Auto-Resolution correction based on display mode being requested and
  15.     amount of VRAM available.
  16.  6) Auto Display Refresh Rate correction based on the capabilities of the
  17.     RAMDAC on the installed adapter.  For example, if 1600x1200 8 Bpp mode
  18.     is selected on an adapter which uses a Bt485 RAMDAC 135MHz, the driver will 
  19.     not allow this mode to be set since the DAC does not support this mode.
  20.     Instead, it will display a warning message.
  21.     DO NOT try to install for this mode.  It may damage your adapter.
  22.  7) OS/2 Windowed Sessions.
  23.  8) DOS Windowed Sessions.
  24.  9) Full screen OS/2 sessions.
  25. 10) Full screen Dos sessions.
  26. 11) Power 9100 Full screen Windows sessions.
  27. 12) Power 9100 Seamless Windows sessions.
  28. 13) Resolution and color depth switching without having to reinstall the 
  29.     drivers.
  30. 14) Configurable display refresh rates.  
  31. 15) After the drivers have been installed and enabled by restarting the
  32.     system, the configuration utility will display only the color depths
  33.     and resolution modes supported by the installed adapter.
  34. 16) 1, 2 and 4 Megabyte VRAM support.

  36. Mode Support

  39. The following display resolution modes are supported by this driver:
  40.  
  41. NOTE: Take into consideration the amount of memory on your
  42.       video card.  Some of the modes supplied are NOT
  43.       supported if the card has only 2MB of video memory.

  55. Driver Installation Procedures:
  56. ------------------------------
  57.  
  58. The diskette must have the correct volume label in order for the install
  59. program to function correctly.  The correct volume label is:
  60.  
  61. P91DRV 1
  62.  
  63. The space is required.  You can apply the volume label to the disk by
  64. typing the following from an OS/2 command prompt:
  65.  
  66. label x: [Enter]
  67. P91DRV 1 [Enter]
  68.  
  69. Where x is the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the Power
  70. 9100 driver disk.  For example, if the floppy drive with the Power
  71. 9100 driver disk was drive A, you would type:
  72.  
  73. label a: [Enter]
  74. P91DRV 1 [Enter]
  75.  
  76.  
  77. Driver installation is initiated by running the INSTALL.CMD batch file
  78. from the installation diskette.  This batch file copies installation files
  79. to the OS/2 installation directory and executes the OS/2 DSPINSTL program
  80. from the hard drive.
  81.  
  82. The OS/2 driver installation program installs both the OS/2 drivers and the
  83. Windows drivers. Do not perform a separate installation of the Windows
  84. drivers as described in the Windows drivers release notes.  To do so can
  85. cause problems; for example, Seamless Windows support may no longer work,
  86. and the version of Full Screen Windows drivers may not be compatible with
  87. Full Screen WIN-OS2.
  88.  
  89. 1)  Bring up OS/2 as you would normally.  (VGA driver should be installed.)
  90.  
  91. 2)  Make sure you have closed any Windows Full Screen and Seamless Windows
  92.     sessions.
  93.  
  94. 3)  Insert the Power 9100 OS/2 distribution diskette into either drive A:
  95.     or drive B:.
  96.  
  97. 4)  Select either an OS/2 Window or OS/2 Full Screen session from the
  98.     "Command Prompts" folder.
  99.  
  100. 5)  Select the diskette drive you are using by typing either A: or B: and
  101.     [Enter].
  102.  
  103. 6)  To start the installation, type
  104.  
  105.     install <bootdrive>:
  106.  
  107.     Where <bootdrive> is the letter of the drive where OS/2 is installed
  108.     and started from.  For example, if you have installed OS/2 on drive
  109.     C: then you would issue the command
  110.  
  111.     install c:
  112.  
  113. 7)  In the "Display Driver Install" dialog box, select
  114.  
  115.     Primary Display
  116.  
  117.     and click on the OK button.
  118.  
  119. 8)  In the "Display Adapter Type" dialog box, select
  120.  
  121.     Power 9100 Display Driver
  122.  
  123.     and click on the OK button.
  124.  
  125. 9)  In the "Source Directory" dialog box, ensure that the drive indicated
  126.     is the drive the installation diskette is in.  Change it if necessary.
  127.     Click on the Install button.
  128.  
  129.     The installation utility copies files into the appropriate directories
  130.     and modifies the CONFIG.SYS, SYSTEM.INI, and OS2.INI files.
  131.  
  132. 10) When the file have been copied, the Power 9100 Configuration Utility
  133.     dialog box will be displayed.  You may now select the specific driver
  134.     configuration that you would like to run.  You do this by making
  135.     selections in the Monitor, Color Depth, Resolution, Refresh Rate and
  136.     Resource Size list boxes.  After you have specified the desired
  137.     configuration, click on the Save button.
  138.  
  139.     The Power 9100 Configuration Utility saves the configuration information
  140.     in the OS2.INI file.  It also creates a "Weitek Display Driver Utilities"
  141.     folder on the OS/2 desktop.  This folder contains utilities for
  142.     configuring the Power 9100 OS/2 display driver as well as the Power 9100
  143.     Full Screen Windows display driver.
  144.  
  145.     The Full Screen Windows drivers are installed using the default
  146.     configuration of 640x480 8 bits per pixel configuration.  Upon restarting
  147.     OS/2 you may change this configuration by running the Power 9100 Full
  148.     Screen Windows display driver configuration utility from the "Weitek
  149.     Display Driver Utilities" folder.
  150.  
  151.     Note:  Your hardware may not support all of the displayed color depths
  152.        and resolutions.  If you are unsure of whether a specific
  153.        configuration is supported by your hardware, select cancel
  154.        and the proceed to step 11.  This will install the default
  155.        configuration of 640x480 8 bits per pixel.  Upon restarting
  156.        OS/2, follow the procedures in the "Changing Power 9100 OS/2 Driver
  157.        Configuration" section.
  158.  
  159. 11) The "Display Driver Install" dialog box informs you that changes have
  160.     been made to your system configuration and you must shut down your
  161.     system.  Click on the OK button.
  162.  
  163. 12) Remove the distribution diskette from the diskette drive.
  164.  
  165. 13) Shut down the system by selecting Shut Down from the OS/2 desktop
  166.     menu.
  167.  
  168. 14) Press Ctrl/Alt/Delete.
  169.  
  170. 15) Restart OS/2.  The selected driver configuration is now installed
  171.     and running.
  172.  
  173. Changing Power 9100 OS/2 Driver Configuration:
  174. ---------------------------------------------
  175.  
  176. 1)  Run the Power 9100 OS/2 Driver Configuration Utility from the "Weitek
  177.     Display Driver Utilities" folder.
  178.  
  179. 2)  Select the appropriate monitor from the "Monitor Type" list box.
  180.  
  181. 3)  Select the desired color depth from the "Color Depth" list box.
  182.  
  183. 4)  Select the desired resolution from the "Resolution" list box.
  184.  
  185. 5)  Select the desired refresh rate from the "Refresh Rate" list box.
  186.  
  187. 6)  Select the desired icon resource size from the "Resource Size" list box.
  188.  
  189. 7)  After making all the desired changes to the driver configuration, click
  190.     the Save button.  The driver configuration information will be updated and
  191.     the utility will close.  In order for the changes to take effect you will
  192.     have to shut down your system and restart OS/2.
  193.  
  194. 8)  Clicking on the Reset button will reset the configuration parameters to
  195.     the current driver configuration.
  196.  
  197. 9)  Clicking on the Cancel button will close the configuration utility
  198.     without making any changes to the current driver configuration.
  199.  
  200. Removing the Power 9100 Drivers
  201. -------------------------------
  202. 1)  Make sure you have closed any Windows Full Screen and Seamless Windows
  203.     sessions.
  204.  
  205. 2)  Insert the Power 9100 OS/2 distribution diskette into either drive A:
  206.     or drive B:.
  207.  
  208. 3)  Select either an OS/2 Window or OS/2 Full Screen session from the
  209.     "Command Prompts" folder.
  210.  
  211. 4)  Type: 
  212.  
  213.     DSPINSTL [Enter]
  214.  
  215. 5)  In the "Display Driver Install" dialog box, select
  216.  
  217.     Primary Display
  218.  
  219.     and click on the OK button.
  220.  
  221. 6)  In the "Display Adapter Type" dialog box, select
  222.  
  223.     Power 9x00 - Remove Driver
  224.  
  225.     and click on the OK button.
  226.  
  227. 7)  In the "Source Directory" dialog box, ensure that the drive indicated
  228.     is the drive the installation diskette is in.  Change it if necessary.
  229.     Click on the Install button.
  230.  
  231.     The removal utility modifies the CONFIG.SYS, SYSTEM.INI, and OS2.INI files.
  232.     No files are deleted by the removal utility.
  233.  
  234. 8) The "Display Driver Install" dialog box informs you that changes have
  235.     been made to your system configuration and you must shut down your
  236.     system.  Click on the OK button.
  237.  
  238. 9) Exit the OS/2 Window or Full Screen command prompt by typing,
  239.  
  240.     exit [Enter]
  241.  
  242. 13) Remove the distribution diskette from the diskette drive.
  243.  
  244. 14) Shut down the system by selecting Shut Down from the OS/2 desktop
  245.     menu.
  246.  
  247. 15) Press Ctrl/Alt/Delete.
  248.  
  249. 16) Restart OS/2.  OS/2 should now come up in VGA.
  250.  
  251. Known Limitations
  252. -----------------
  253.  
  254. There are issues with OS/2 2.11 (OS/2 2.1 with OS/2 Corrective Services 
  255. Diskettes XR06200), and 32-bits-per-pixel (32 bpp) modes.  These issues will 
  256. appear in OS/2 applications that display bitmaps, such as OS/2 Chess.  In 
  257. 32 bpp mode, the chess pieces will appear clear.  You may also see black
  258. icons on the OS/2 desktop.  These are issues with OS/2 2.11, as the problems
  259. do not appear with the retail copy of OS/2 2.1.  Any issues in 32 bpp mode
  260. with OS/2 2.11 should be verified on OS/2 2.1 to determine if the problem
  261. is caused by OS/2 2.11 or the Power 9100 drivers.
  262.  
  263. Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 (MMPM/2) has issues with 16 bpp modes that
  264. are corrected in the OS/2 Corrective Services Diskettes XR06200.  It is
  265. recommended that the Corrective Services Diskettes for MMPM/2 be applied to
  266. resolve this problem.
  267.  
  268. Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 (MMPM/2) currently does not support 32 bpp
  269. modes.
  270.  
  271. During program load from the desktop, the colors of the icons on the desktop
  272. may change colors, or the entire screen may change colors.  Some programs 
  273. supply their own color palette which overrides OS/2's color palette.  The 
  274. desktop should return to normal when the application is closed, or by 
  275. performing an action (such as opening or closing a folder) that refreshes the 
  276. screen.
  277.  
  278. Special Note to VL-Bus Users
  279. ----------------------------
  280. The Power 9100 chip requires a 4MB address space to function correctly.
  281. The start location of this 4MB range is controlled by the wBase= line in 
  282. the P9X00RES.DAT file, which is normally located in the \OS2\POWER_9K (for OS/2
  283. support) and \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 (for WinOS2 support) directories, and by the  
  284. MemAddr= line in the P9X00RES.INI file in \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 directory.
  285. The default memory base address is 80000000h.  Not all VL-Bus motherboards 
  286. support this default memory base address.  If you get a black screen after 
  287. installing these drivers and rebooting, follow the instructions on page 338
  288. of the "Using the Operating System" manual for "Recovering from an Incorrect
  289. Display Type Selection" to return to VGA.  Remove the Power 9100 drivers as
  290. outlined in the section above.  Shut down OS/2, restart, then reinstall the
  291. Power 9100 drivers.  However, before shutting down after the install, edit the 
  292. P9X00RES.DAT files in the \OS2\POWER_9K and \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 directories.  
  293. Look for the line that reads:

  297. Change this to one of the following options:
  298.  
  299. wBase = 20
  300. wBase = 40
  301. wBase = 60
  302. wBase = 90
  303. wBase = A0
  304. wBase = B0
  305. wBase = C0
  306. wBase = D0
  307.  
  308. Try each until you find one that brings up OS/2.  Then, look for the following
  309. line in the P9X00RES.INI file in \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2:

  313. If you selected wBase = 20 in P9X00RES.DAT, change the line to read:
  314.  
  315. MemAddr=2000
  316.  
  317. If you selected wBase = 40 in P9X00RES.DAT, change the line to read:

  321. If you selected wBase = 60 in P9X00RES.DAT, change the line to read:

  325. If you selected wBase = 90 in P9X00RES.DAT, change the line to read:
